Story on new kicker

I really hope this kid can get it done. Great story about him coming here from Philadelphia. I bet when he was growing up he NEVER imagined he would be going to college in Wyoming! His friends probably all thought, "you're going where?" But I bet none of those other kids from his team that went Div I will be starting this week. It would nice to have him have a great game and get some press back there in Philadelphia.

Great story. I really hope that he can get us some consistency. 40 yards isn't that far out for a field goal, but if his accuracy is good I'll take it. His leg strength can always be improved.

Great story and very cool dad! I wish him the best. With that kind of drive he has a real opportunity to get stronger and light up the skies for Wyoming. I'd love to see him do very well and earn a scholarship. Go Watts and Go Pokes!

I noticed this from the article
"Christensen said they'll continue to practice on Jonah Field the entire season, regardless of how cold it may be."

Toughen them up a bit.

Might as well get used to it, if you have to play in it, greater home field advantage. The IPF is great for Spring and when weather (howling winds, lightning) makes practice completely inefficient, other than that I would practice in the War as well. If it is just cold, practice outside, it doesn't affect communication.

I agree that there are advantages of practicing where you play. Makes me wonder why UW football practiced on the south grass fields the entire fall. :?:

I think all the hype about a new starter is not good. It makes the expectations of the fans AND the player too high, and places too much stress on the player. In my opinion, it is best just to quietly insert him into the game when needed. If he does well, then do the story.

Then the newspaper people aren't doing their jobs.

New kicker is a walk on who came from Philadelphia to Wyoming of all places? You've got to write about that. Besides, if he can't deal with a few news stories, then he won't be able to deal when the game is on the line.

Christensen has no idea what he's talking about. To practice outside "regardless of how cold it may be" will mean many days where his players get hurt and where nothing gets done. There are days where you just can't be outside in Laramie.

I personally love the idea! How can you say they can't be outside? What did the football team do before the IPF? There has not been a day in Laramie that I thought I "can't go outside", much less go play some football. I was a receiver/safety/kicker and damnit I'll practice through anything my coached ever asked me to.

I think it's much more dangerous practicing in the heat.. I remember a football camp in southern Alabama where my cleats were melting on the astroturf because it was so hot. You literally can't practice more than a half hour without a major water break.

Unfortunately football has become softer over the years, and I can say that because I have seen it. I coached high school the past 3 years and I coach a youth team here in Laramie. Football is not a safe sport, if you want something safe.. Like Dan Hawkins said "Go play intramurals brother!"
