Sternberg should resign

Dear Editor,

What’s this I read on the front page of Friday’s edition of the Laramie Boomerang? Yet another University of Wyoming dean “resigned” (translation: resigned before current UW President Robert Sternberg fired him).

I am a resident of Laramie and have never been employed by UW, but one does not need to be a UW employee in this small town to hear about the damage that is being done to our beloved University under President Robert Sternberg’s short tenure — God forbid, the destruction he will wreak should he be allowed to complete his over-priced three-year contract.

I’m praying that won’t happen, that the UW Trustees will — finally — come to their senses (before they all begin to look like fools) and admit they made a dreadful mistake, and fix it ASAP.

I am not against change, believing that well-thought out and constructive change is good for any institution. This is not the kind of change I have observed over the past four — yes, it is only four — months.

A botanic garden on campus? Seriously? In Laramie’s climate? And where is the funding for this? An expensive search firm for a vice-president of administration that cannot produce a viable candidate? And where is that funding source? Yet another consulting firm hired to “study” what Sternberg perceives to be a problem with any number of UW departments? An annual $40,000 housing allowance and the UW president rents a UW-owned property for $1,000 a month? House-hunting in Colorado? Gee, and we all believed him when he stated — numerous times — how much he loves the Cowboy State. Not.

Replacing Tom Burman and Larry Shyatt? Better think twice on that one. Shyatt and Burman are both well-respected and well-liked professionals in the state and the region; asking for their resignations would be yet another serious and inept blunder.

Yes, the UW president has already made quite a name for himself in what may be remembered, by the few professionals who remain there, as four of the longest months ever in Old Main history.

It seems to me that most of the “ethical leaders” we did have at UW have been forced to resign and publically excoriated by the current UW president before they even left the building.

His unabashed criticism of a former UW president, and former administrators whom he has forced out are embarrassingly unprofessional and one might even call unethical.

Those he has removed by “resignation” were extremely competent professionals who valued and respected our much-loved institution and performed their jobs with the shared goal of making the university a better place for our in-state as well as out-of-state students, future leaders and the state as a whole.

UW as the No. 1 land grant institution? Many Wyomingites are laughing at Sternberg’s endless and pointless pontifications on that subject — what ridiculous hyperbole.

We in Wyoming are realistic and practical. We know we have the smallest population of the 50 states and to attempt to establish his stated — over and over and over again — goal for UW is indeed humorous and demonstrates just how out of touch he really is with our great state.

We know we cannot be Harvard or Tufts, and guess what, we don’t want to be. What we want is what is the best for our students and our state — a good, solid education that has nothing to do with UW President Robert Sternberg’s particular demonstration of “ethical” leadership.

The fix for this unfortunate situation we Wyomingites find ourselves in?

Simple: Have Sternberg “resign.” That is the headline I hope to read soon. I’m an optimistic person, I believe that the correct and ethical decision will be made soon by our state and university leaders concerning our uniquely Wyoming institution before it is too late.

That was a letter to the editor in the Laramie Boomerang.

To me it shows what's wrong with UW.
The person who wrote this has the "we are who we are" mentality. Sternberg wants to be the #1 land grant institution and this person scolds him for it.

What a joke.

From everything I have heard, a bunch of people at UW aren't too happy with Sternberg. And why is that? Because he doesn't accept bullshit and mediocrity in athletics or academics?

People are getting a fire lit under their ass, and don't like it.
I think it's about damn time.

I'm not saying everything he is doing is right, but the majority of the projects and plans are.

until proven otherwise, I stand with Sternberg. The good ol boys club needs to get over it. It is 2013. Time to put up or shut up. This battling for the famous Idaho Garbage Bowl or the New Mexico Something or Other Bowl is getting old.

I was just gonna ask if you saw that Beav. That is the perfect example of "good enough is good enough" and not just in sports but the school in general

I fucking hate it man.

I want the best for this university.
Sports, and academics.

Funny how that person mentioned firing Shyatt...yet we on Wyonation haven't heard anything about that.
Or did I miss something?

To me it seems like a bunch of die hard Wyo fans, some of which are students, some are alumni, some of which have some real inside connections with UW sports, would hear about the possibility of firing Shyatt before someone who even announced has no real connection to UW would.

Don't know his reasons for forcing professors to resign, so I can't comment.

The botanical garden, however, does seem a bit.....odd.

People are probably nervous with the new sheriff in town. Sternberg may me a complete @sshole. I don't know. All I know is that he has sent me three emails in reply to my questions. I was impressed. If people are uneasy, then they probably need to leave anyway. Maybe they are worried that their half-assed mediocre effort wont cut it anymore. Just like a 4-8 season.

Doesn't UW have a botanical garden already? In the Aven Nelson building. I guess it's a "conservatory" not a garden so I don't know.

To Beav, I think its probably someone who pays no to minimal attention to sports and heard coach was on the hot seat, basically. Don't know how else Shy would be involved in getting fired sorts of rumors.

To BHR, it may be odd but that sort of thing can only help the general image down the road of the University. I actually have been on OSU campus and while I would compare Stillwater to a bigger Laramie and OSU honestly to a bigger UW with bigger donors (Pickens), if I remember right they had a couple things like that where you wouldn't think they serve any real purpose but there they are, worst case scenario there to me is we randomly have some gardens on campus

I like what Sternberg is doing, and it is nice to see a president that is determined to get what is the best out of this university. Will we ever be athletically as good as a school like Alabama, probably not, but there is no reason we should not be on the level of a Boise and winning conference titles at least on a regular basis. Academically I would also love to see us be the #1 land grant university, is it likely probably not, but might as well set the bar very high and keep pushing yourself to get better and better.

Exactly, what's the point of doing something at all of you're not striving to be the best around at it, whatever it is? Whether its running a school or playing tennis, just anything on general

Thanks for posting that letter, and based upon the contents, it appears to suggest that more than a few people at UW have become satisfied with the status quo and want nothing to do with raising there collective games.

Sounds to me as though Mr Sternberg is just the right tonic for what ails the mediocrity driven University Of Wyoming.

If those who have grown cushy in their positions at the University don't like it - then leave.

Go Pokes.

The Botany department would love it. They already have a greenhouse and do a significant amount of plant horticulture. WIth the land scape crew it really wouldn't be that hard and it would be great for the botany department research and educational wise. The spring summers and falls you could do all sorts of things in there.

So there is one of two things going on:

- Sternberg is a raging @ss and is running off anyone who has the sense to get out of the way

- Sternberg is a raging @ss who is right about what he is doing and cleaning house of people who don't want to get on the train with him

I'm thinking the second is the most likely situation. Phil Dubois made massive differences across the University and created exactly these types of sh!tstorms. The minions got their revenge by torpedoing the search for his replacement and getting their homeboy put in charge. Everyone got to sit back and feel cozy for a while. But for some reason the UW Trustees decided that wasn't going to cut it any more, and have hired a guy much more like Dubois. I say he should go for it.

Like I said before- feelings will be hurt and (people) lost- the letter writer, like so many, talks change, but practices comfort.

"Signed, Mrs Tom Burman."

I am not against change, believing that well-thought out and constructive change is good for any institution. This is not the kind of change I have observed over the past four — yes, it is only four — months.

This is my favorite line. "I am not against change, but I really hate all of that change that Sternberg has affected on campus." The botanical garden was probably in the works long before Sternberg hit campus. And who has mentioned firing Shyatt? This guy/gal/whatever is so frickin' dense..
