One Goal Has Been Reached...
Tom Johnson, Wyoming's very successful swim coach, sets his sights on lofty goals. At the beginning of 2012, his target was to qualify between six and eight of his swimmers for the Olympic Trials. Those six competed this week at Omaha, for a chance to represent America. Kelsey Conci has led the way for Wyoming, reaching the semi-finals of the 100-meter backstroke. She swims tonight at a little after seven. NBC is carrying the semis. Brandon Fischer is competing in the 100 and 200-meter breaststroke as well as the 200 indivdiual medley."We're excited about the quality and number of people we have going to the trials this year," Johnson said. Junior Morgan Hartigan (women's 100 breaststroke), senior Trevor LeValley (400 IM), junior Jayce Calhoon (200 backstroke) and sophomore Jordan Turner (200 IM) round out the Wyoming roster at the Trials. To advance to the U.S. Olympic Swim team and compete in the 2012 olympic Games the competitors must make the top two of their respective event.

Saying Goodbye. . .
During the month of June UW athletics has lost a couple of true Cowboys. Long time friend and supporter Steve Mullen of Laramie died two weeks ago in a job related accident, and Cowboy letterman from the '66 Sun Bowl team, Ed Froehlich, died last week. There was no better friend to the Cowboys and Cowgirls than Mullen. He loved Wyoming athletics and did much for the department. His wife Cindy is a member of the Cowboy Joe Club Board of Directors. Froehlich lettered for the Cowboys from 1964 through 1966. He was a fierce competitor and a heck of a football player in the Cowboy secondary. He was a key factor on Wyoming's great 1966 defense that helped the Cowboys go 10-1 and beat Florida State in the Sun Bowl on Christmas Eve of 1966. Both of these Cowboys will be truly missed.

Getting It Done with the Books. . .
There was a time when at least a couple of Wyoming's intercollegiate programs received a gloomy report when it came to the Academic Progress Rates (APR) established by the NCAA for university athletic teams. Those days are gone! All 17 of UW's athletic programs exceeded the NCAA APR standard of 925. That's according to the most recent data gathered for the four-year period ending with the 2010-11 academic year. "The emphasis placed on the APR by the NCAA is evident in the postseason restrictions they have begun to place on schools who don't meet the APR standard," UW Athletics Director Tom Burman said. "Our student-athletes and coaches know that our success in the classroom is as important to us as our success on the playing field. I am extremely proud of the hard work that our student-athletes, academic staff and coaches have put in to achieve these most recent APR scores. Cowgirl golf (993), volleyball (984) and men's cross country (980) led the way. This is the ninth year of the NCAA's APR program.

Thanks for Your Patience. . .
The current television negotiatons are on-going and have delayed the announcement of Cowboy football game times. We are still awaiting for those start times to be finalized. There are a couple of things we do know: all games will be on Saturday. Three kick times have been set todate, Toledo (September 8) will kick at 2 p.m.; Cal Poly (September 15) will kick at 4 p.m. and Boise State (October 27) will start at 1:30 p.m. "We are working hard to get our games scheduled in the middle of the afternoon," Tom Burman said. "It also looks like a minimum of seven of our games will be on some sort of regional or national television carrier." While the deadline has been pushed back several times, the hope is that all of the game times will be finalized by the end of June or in early July.

A Wyoming Welcome. . .
The Cowboy and Cowgirl swimming program has a new diving coach. He is Yahya (YAH-yah) Radman. Radman, a native of Bloomington, Ind., has been an assistant diving coach at Florida State the past two years. He is a graduate of Indiana University, where he earned his bachelor's in French, near eastern cultures and politics.

Once again the Evanston golf tournament is the most successful on the Cowboy Joe Club tour. Congratulations to everyone in Evanston and Unita County for what they do for that tournament. While final totals aren't completed as yet, that event made well over $30,000 for UW athletic scholarships!
There is still room for players in the Jackson tournament which is scheduled for this Saturday at Teton Pines. That event tees off at 1:30 p.m.
Hopefully you have September 7 marked on your calendar. That's the evening of the Cowboy Joe Club Auction presented by Infinity Power and Controls. Once again the event is set at Cheyenne's Little America Grand Ballroom.
