I guess a year ago we didn't start out that great vs Weber State either. I'm very concerned about our lines, though. ACS' completion percentage of over 80% is definitely the big positive to take away from this. Giving up almost 200 yards rushing to a lower-tier team is a huge negative, however.

I was able to watch the Montana State game today and was at the Wyoming/SUU game. One thing I noticed, Wyoming's D is HORRIBLE. I have some serious concerns about that side of the ball. Offense needs to score at least 40 every game to stay competitive. I think if Montana State had played Wyoming today, Wyoming would have got thumped. If Montana had played Wyoming today, it would've been down right ugly. I'm sure hoping Wyoming gets straight this week before heading into games with Texas and Boise State. Yikes!!

True, but from what I saw of the Cat game, there were little to no mistakes. Not sure about the Griz game, I didn't watch it. For my first Wyo experience, I wasn't terribly impressed. Atmosphere was awesome though!

I can proudly say I lead section 28 in cheering! :D

But BOTH lines need a LOT of work. ESPECSIALLY at stopping the run. Holy crap.

SUU picked apart the zone defense with 4-3. There was always a hole in coverage near the middle and they made some huge plays when a receiver would hit that hole.

Run wise, I'm not sure what the answer is there. The d line would get tied up with the o-line and couldn't get to the rb and often a linebacker wasn't in the area. The front four needs to do something different.

Offensively, the blitz got us. Other times coverage was good and the o-line didn't hold. But when it did, there always seemed to be several open WR's.

Obgonna's fumble came from a hard hit. Cut him in half. The interception was, well, odd, as i thought it was caught and i have no idea how SUU came up with it. Probably more to do with where i was sitting in the stands.

Running wise, the line opened a few big holes, but most of the time they were running into the defense.

We did get 28 points up. That was nice. Not sure what they need to do on defense, more 3-4, or more 4-3 man coverage. Not sure how the latter will help us on the run though.

Either we were completely terrible running the ball, or, we held back...I say we held back and didn't run all of our Offense. I wasn't there. But it's like I noticed against Weber last year. Our play calling was pretty 'Vanilla' when it came down to it. Everything was plain. We just had big breaks. We only ran the ball about 25 times, and we passed way more than normal. I think they have plays set aside for the comp coming up. I know as an Offensive Coord myself, I don't run my good plays until I play good teams. that way I can surprise the good teams come game time. But granted... I think we should have at least got 100 yards on the ground.

Defensively? I don't know. I know that with a 4-3 your lb's need to be in sink with the line. And it seems that it wasn't the case tonight... How someone said a hole would be left open in the middle of the field. 4-3 is more timing between lb's and De's... 3-4 is timing between Lb's and Db's.

Well, a win is a win I guess. i'll take it and hope that DC lights a fire under the D!

By the way, what was the attendance tonight? And, were there any changes to the Uni's?

I'm a fan and not a football schemer :). I didn't really start paying attentions to the formations until i moved out of the student section and into the upper stands. Amazing what you observe when you can see from up there. I believe the announcer said 20,333. Not sure on the 333 part though :(

A bit over 20,400.

Reminded me of the Weber game last year frankly. Played a limited game plan, got conservative and it almost cost us at the end when they made a run just like Weber.

Montana and MSU basically played HIgh School teams today. I do like the young MSU QB though. He might be a keeper.

I was at the game, and I don't know the reason they reported the attendance as 20,000+. You couldn't have put another 5,000 in there with a shoe horn.
We have the same problem as last year on defense (and offense). Yes, we got credited with 4 sacks (I don't remember all of them), but their QB had 4 times as much time as ours did to stay in the pocket and look for receivers. There should have been several holding calls on SUU though and I don't remember any being called. Also, that offensive PI call on Bolger was BS and I had a pretty good view of the fumble by Ogbonna and I thought he was down when the ball came out.
We have a lot of work to do in many areas of this team though. One more thing, for someone who is supposed to be slow, Bolger flat outran the DB on his long TD reception and he is still a steady receiver and runs good routes.

Agreed. And the passing game (when the O-line held) looked great. So that is a plus.

we marched down on them w ease to start 7-0 and then they march on us but miss a field goal and it looks like we are going to march again then mazi fumbles... and then we go down and get to the 1 and throw a pic... idk thats atleast 7 if not 14 points for us and 7 for them... we shouldve blown them out but we gave them hope and if you give any team hope there is a chance

I know. Just one of those days. Overall though, the passing game was much better. The running game needs work though. And that means the O-line picks up blocks and pushes that D away.

I hope Dave tore them new assholes after the game. The O line couldnt have held a 5 year old girl back if ACS was holding a lollipop.

Just to weather the storm a bit, the Pokes only called one running play over and over again the entire game. In fact, the first two plays of each series were the same for every single drive.

1st down: Read option - SUU starting keying on this one early after they realized that was the only running play we were going to call. YPC weren't bad before they picked up on this.

2nd down: Screen - Big reason the O-line looked porous. When you have half the line pulling to set up a screen the QB isn't going to have much time. SUU figured this one out pretty quickly, too.

Our play calling was extremely predictable. If I could figure it out from the stands before the end of the 1st quarter, then the SUU coaching staff had it pegged pretty quickly. Major improvements need to happen on the D-line, but I'm really not that concerned with the ground game.

I really think they did it so Texas doesn't have much to go off with game film...They'll catch Texas off guard on some new plays. It's common for a coaching staff to win a winnable game with your easiest plays. Then bring out the rest of the playbook on your better comp.

That still doesn't change the fact that our d-line couldn't stop the run at all.
