Southern Jaguars @ Wyoming

A little bit of info on the Southern Jaguars:

The Jaguars enter the game against the Pokes with a 1-3 record. They have yet to play a home game, opening with their first six games of the season on the road. They were picked to finish 2nd out of the 10 team SWAC conference.

Player to Watch: #2 Derick Beltran; Beltran is a 6'4 senior guard who is entering his 2nd year at Southern after transferring from Tallahassee CC. Beltran is a very athletic guy who is dangerous off the dribble and can also knock down mid-range and long-range jump shots. He is a streaky offensive player, but if he gets going, he is nearly unstoppable. Beltran is a candidate to go off for 30+ every time he touches the court. The Pokes will need to keep a close eye on him early in the contest as to not let him get off to a hot start.

Don't be fooled by the fact that this team is 1-3 or that they lost to NC Central. This is the best basketball team we have faced up to this point in the young season. The Cowboys need to take advantage inside in this game. If the Pokes have a cold shooting night, this will be a close contest. Looking forward to a great game to end the Showcase!

Thank you!!!

I think UW D holds Beltran to 10 points, while the team as a whole continue to grow and click! you know those young guys are just dying to get on the court again after back to back games and making serious progress. Look for the young guys to step up even more while Leonard goes off for his typcial 17 and 9!

Go pokes!!! 70-48 tonight!

Today's Denver Post MUST have a mistake in the basketball odds section. They have Southern by 16 ! Where do I place my bet?

The Denver Post is wrong. I just looked it up, and Wyoming is a 19 1/2 point favorite at all LV casinos except for the Station Casinos where they are 19 point favorites.

This game looks like it will be our first test of the year shouldn't be a huge test but these guys can shoot and are starting strong.

Shyatt sounds really pissed off, I can't usually hear him on the web cast and I can hear him yelling at the players much more than usual so either the team is tired from 4 games in 7 days or Shyatt is just on them early and not letting it get out of hand.

Need to quit shooting the 3's they aren't dropping get the ball into the paint let Washington and Nance get the game moving.

Wyoming took 15 3's in the first half and only 13 two pointers. That is terrible. You should never be shooting more 3's than two's. Live by the 3 and die by the 3. I hope that isn't what this team is this year.

I really hope shyatt beat/talked/kicked some sense into them during halftime.

Now we are down by 8 and we keep putting up 3's I don't get it at all. We need to get the ball into the paint and get the game back in control if Martinez can't hit a 3 then dish it to Washington but hell Washington was putting up 3's as well. Not sure what they are doing tonight but they better figure it out right now.

We need a true center...Sellers is the only "center" we have, but he isn't ready to contribute. We need a 7 footer who can bang it down low.

It's a good win they came back from being down by 10 points and I can't think of many games last year we were able to come back when we were down.

Good win.......this game is a subtle reminder though to keep expectations in check. By no means are there many "gimme" games this season.

Yup I believe that tonight might have been somewhat of a wake up call and I hope they take it to heart that if they don't play hard and quit shooting 3's when they have no business the losses will come as quick as the wins.

I'm not saying no one should shoot them but we need inside presence to open the outside shots we have a few good shooters from 3 but I'd prefer Washington stick with the paint over putting up 3's.

Either way good win and can't wait for that Colorado game as it is will the first true test of the season!!!

The last part of the game, last 10 mins I think we caught a glimpse of what this team can be. Crowd was into it, offense ran through Washington, Luke was hitting his shots, the defense was phenomenal. They actually pushed the ball on O. It was fun to watch. They way they played the last 10 we could be dangerous.

I disagree. I love our lineup and how everyone plays, everyone can run and stretch the floor. Both Leonard and nance can go on the block. The true center is a dying position

In theory, I agree with this. If you look at our starting line-up, there are 5 players on the court that have to be guarded to the 3-point line and they are all quality FT shooters as well (that's why we won last night, 20-22). We should be able to space the floor, alternate Leonard and Larry on the block and have a variety of cutters to try to get to the rim and the line.

On the flip side, we have taken a massive step backwards on defense this year. This is the second low-major team (NCCU the other) that had their way with us and shot a very high percentage, particularly from the arc.

Since you were able to see the game, what is your evaluation on that end? Are we getting beat off the dribble and the resulting defensive help is allowing open 3's, or are we just slow on rotations?

No it's not. Tell that to Cody Zeller and any Indiana fan and they will laugh you right out the door. Did we forget about Hansborough at UNC? Isaiah Austin at Baylor? Jack Cooley at Notre Dame? That's just to name a few.
It isn't a dying position, we just have a lot of coaches who are looking for 6-10 big men who are more agile and can run and shoot from anywhere on the floor. But, there are still a lot of true post up players out there.
