So what do you savvy guys think of...

First time poster, but it looks like the timing is right to jump right in.

What are your thoughts on the 10 following potential candidates (at least potential in my mind, I have no insider info):
1. Craig Bohl - HC at North Dakota State - Seems to be a popular candidate, but I think he has his eyes set on a bigger program.
2. Todd Orlando - DC at Utah State - Took us to the woodshed, always has top defenses and has experience in the Big East including the Fiesta Bowl.
3. Robin Pflugrad - OC at Weber State - Had a great record at Montana and would think he wants to get back to being a HC. Has some baggage in his past that might need to be checked, and I'm a little leery of ex-FCS coaches (see Joe Glenn).
4. Mark Mangino - OC at Youngstown State - Another baggage guy, but undeniably turned the Kansas program around quickly. Former Coach of the Year, BCS experience, probably wants to get back in as HC and might be willing to come at what we might be willing to pay.
5. John Wristen - HC at CSU-Pueblo - Yes, another D2 guy, but has built a program from scratch and taken it to the top in just a few years. Had prior experience coaching special teams/TE's at UCLA under Karl Dorrell.
6. Gary Barnett - ex-HC at Colorado - Out of coaching for a few years, but might be had cheaply. Former Coach of the Year and big success at CU and Northwestern. Like Bob Davie at UNM, might need to shake off the rust, but could be a steal.
7. Ed Orgeron - ex-USC interim coach - Like Bohl, probably won't come to a smaller program. But throwing him in for conversation.
8. Brent Pease - ex-Florida OC - yes, another coordinator, but has former ties to Boise and might want to come back West.
9. Pat Narduzzi - DC at Michigan State - Rumors have this guy as possibly the best available assistant in the country right now. Almost went to Cincinnati after Brian Kelly went to Notre Dame. Probably wouldn't stay long, but might get things on track.
10. Bill Young - ex-DC at Oklahoma State - already a "consultant" - possibly likely to take the reins?

Any thoughts/comments/other ideas....

Welcome MHC...right now I'd go with the 1-2 guys on your list.

Not likely for any of these, but I would ask.

1) Greg Roman.
2) Dan Quinn (Seahawks DC).
3) Eric Studesville (Broncos RB coach). No idea on his interest level.

Bring back Jay Novacek as tight ends coach/assistant OC (not sure he would be interested).

Orlando has a whole @ssload of Andersen recruits. Kind of like Whittingham riding the coattails of Urban for several years. I am skeptical still on that one.

Bohl-A good FCS coach, but so was Glenn. Sorry, but can't help but be wary here.

Orlando-I'd rather have a guy who has had FBS headcoaching experience, and was successful. Plus, there are better DCs out there.

Pflugrad- Not even an FCS head coach. Sorry, but no.

Mangino- Did do well at KU when most others don't. Seems to have a LOT of baggage though.

Wristen- D2 isn't even in the same category as FCS recruiting, let alone FBS. So whily he may be doing well in D2, FBS is a whole other level.

Barnett- Sounds a lot like Tiller. Old, retired, loved coaching, but perfectly happy retired.

Ogeron- Had a good defense at USC, still wondering why he was never even given an interview to become the new HC. Seems to be applying for FAU. Maybe, but would need a competant staff.

Pease- Failed at Florida, and most former BSU coordinators seem to fail once they leave. So no.

Narduzzi-Very good defenses year in and year out. Would open pipelines to the Midwest. Would need a good OC to go with the defense though.

Young- Solid defenses in the past, and although a "consultant", he's pretty old. Not sure if he wants to stick around.

I don't like Ed O as much as everyone else. He did terrible at Ol Miss as coach. 16-27 as a head coach. Not for me. Yeah he won a few games as interim coach at USC this year but that doesn't really tell me a whole lot. No thanks.

Yeah, plus a coach we fired beat him twice while Ed O was at Ole Miss.

I think you need to group the candidate pool thusly-

at the top- 1) current FBS head coaches with three or more years experience and winning records

2) former "Big Five" FBS head coaches with more than eight years experience including four winning seasons and championship runs (a finish in their respective conference no lower than third place)

3) current "Big Five" FBS coordinators with more than five years experience including championship and/ or bowl wins;

4) current FCS coaches with more than six years experience and playoff victories;

5) former "Big Five" FBS coordinators (most likely currently NFL personnel) with more than six years experience including championship wins.

Welcome to the board MHC.

Some thoughts on your list:

What are your thoughts on the 10 following potential candidates (at least potential in my mind, I have no insider info):
1. Craig Bohl - HC at North Dakota State - Would love to have a shot, if he can recruit to Fargo, why not try recruiting to Laramie. If he leaves for Nebraska, oh well, that means he/UW is winning.
2. Todd Orlando - DC at Utah State - A nice thought, but as others said there are better DC's out there (see Narduzzi)
3. Robin Pflugrad - OC at Weber State - Don't know enough on him to comment either way, but couldn't have been too outstanding if team was 4-19 last 2 years.
4. Mark Mangino - OC at Youngstown State - Yeah, baggage, but could be a decent hire.
5. John Wristen - HC at CSU-Pueblo - I actually thought this name today as well. Contrary to what others are saying, he can recruit quite well and is a good developer (had an OL get drafter in the 3rd round last year). However, DII to DI is probably too big a leap for Burman to make when his job is on the line.
6. Gary Barnett - ex-HC at Colorado - I would like this hire, but I don't see it happening.
7. Ed Orgeron - ex-USC interim coach - Unlike some, I think Orgeron could be a good get, he's a great recruiter and if we can surround him with a quality staff I think he could do good things.
8. Brent Pease - ex-Florida OC - No thanks, if we take a coordinator, I want his current employer to be upset that he's leaving, not kicking him out the door.
9. Pat Narduzzi - DC at Michigan State - Would be a great hire IMO, but would he come here?
10. Bill Young - ex-DC at Oklahoma State - an interesting name, haven't thought much regarding him though.

Narduzzi would be great but don't see him leaving the B1G region.

The best and most logical hires on that list are Mark Mangino and Craig Bohl. I would add two other FCS coaches I like, Willie Fritz at Sam Houston State and Brock Spack at Illinois State.

I think Mangino is the best of the bunch.

Thanks for the thoughts and the welcomes! You guys had some great points that I hadn't taken in, especially with Pease and Orlando. Hadn't thought about Fritz, although I see now that he Gilmore and Stitt are the first names popping up.

With Fritz and Stitt, I just worry about another Joe Glenn "Learning On The Job" situation. Although Stitt makes a lot happen with not much to work with, Burman needs to realize that his future is tied to his hire which means he probably doesn't take a risk.

All in all, I think Mangino might be the best overall name I've heard so far (don't think we get Bohl or Orgeron) and the article sounds like he might enjoy a family atmosphere in a quieter place like Laramie.

Whoever it is, I hope he gets the $$$ he needs for assistants, not grad school kids or buddies of the coach posing as coaches. Time for this program to decide if it really wants to play (and spend money) on big boy ball, or drop down. Otherwise, we're just throwing more good money after bad. GO POKES!

You should Google Robin Pflugrad.. he wasn't 4-19 at Weebs.. in fact, he has only been OC for one year.

I don't get the love for Orgeron. He couldn't win at Ole Miss where you can't walk down the block without running into an NFL caliber football player.

I like Chad Morris the current OC at Clemson. Not sure if he would be interested but he is a hot commodity right now.

Only thing I would worry about with that is Christensen 2.0.....

Though he is a better OC than Christensen ever was. I spoke to some Missouri alums and they told me that they didn't understand why Wyoming ever wanted Christensen in the 1st place as they thought he was a terrible OC even when they were doing well with Chase Daniels and others. Said it was Pinkel who was the mastermind not Christensen. Which we all know to be the truth now.

I honestly don't see Wyoming hiring any OC's at this point as head coach. It will be someone with head coaching experience.

If Wyoming gets a coach who sees Wyoming as a stepping stone, I hope they can bring in John Wristen as his eventual successor.

Why screw around with the minor leagues when we could shoot for the big-time??
