I really have a strange feeling about this game going to Texas this weekend. It's never easy making that trek, being focused, etc.... People talk about a trap game etc....Is Texas State ready for us, is their defense as good as advertised, how good is their O? are we thinking about the Bye too much...Dennis Franchione has played us before, but I guess never with a QB like Brett Smith. I guess it could be a tune up to conference season huh???
Please reassure me that we'll be ok, I guess it's like every other game, we never know for sure.
sorry for the rant, just really nervous....thanks....i want us to matter in conference this year!!!! Not overlooking anybody but that Nov. 9 game against Fresno in Laramie is starting to loom large, sure hope the fans understand that.
I'm done(for now) lol...thanx

Well, he has played Brett Smith (2011). We will be fine though. I think Texas st. has a good defense, is it good enough to hold us under 30? No! Is their offense good enough to score 24? Probably not!

So we will likely win, and I think by more than the spread.

They really don't have an explosive offense. Its a "run run incomplete punt" or "run run run" offense it seems. Its a team that relies heavily on its defense.

The potential problem is they are going to start a true freshman qb who supposedly can pass.

That's a little bit scary, but... I'm more worried about us turning the ball over. The offense HAS to finish drives and not give away points.

A true freshman being the key word. Not many true freshmen jump right in and can pass. It has even taken Smith a few years to work out some kinks.

I sound like broken record here, but this game is like Air Force. IF th Pokes can get up by 2-3 scores. Game over. I don't think Texas State can pass their way back into a game, especially when it takes them 10 mins to score.

If UW scores 35 points, we win. I can't see this being a shootout. If they win, it will be because of lack of execution by us.

Sound like TSU is pretty up on their D.

For the most part, the offense HAS finished drives. Started slow on 2 games, scored 42 points in the 2nd and 3rd against Idaho. Ball handling has been decent. I see no reason to worry about turnovers.

Pretty funny guys on the TSU board.

The team is focused. I talked to Thompson the other day on campus and he said they are focusing on this game a lot and are going to take advantage of each and every time they get the ball. They want to do whatever they can to go into the bye week with a win. They absolutely do NOT want to be sitting on a loss for two weeks.

Texas State may have a good defense but for the most part have not played anyone good. Texas Tech is a Top 25 team yeah, but they played 2 freshman QBs. AND Tech is working out the kinks in their offense. Wyoming is a well oiled offense. They have not faced anyone like Brett Smith.

If Wyo gets up early and forces them to pass, especially with a true freshman, they will make mistakes. I think Smith ends up with over 300 pass yards, Wick over 100 rush, and the defense gets a pick or two.
45-10 Pokes.

Just to clarify, Tyler Arndt (our 1st team senior QB to this point) has a great arm, but he isnt very mobile. Our 2nd string qb Moore can run, but cant throw.

To flourish in TXST's offense you really need a dual-threat. This true freshman everyone is talking about can do both. In the Texas HS state title game last year, Tyler Jones earned game MVP honors, completing 25 of 32 passes for 432 yards and gained 124 yards on 12 carries and accounted for 9 touchdowns. I know it was just high school, but if you are familiar with how competitive HS football is in Texas, you can appreciate how huge those numbers are and why we are so excited about him.

Having said that.. as of now Coach Fran burning Jones' redshirt is just a rumor. Jones was seen taking reps with the first string during Sunday's practice.. coach fran then had practices closed to the press the rest of the week. It is the first time we've had closed practices this year which leads bobcat fans to believe that the team is up to something new.

I can assure you that we wont be airing it out much. As someone else mentioned, we are a run first/run heavy offense. If you guys get up by a few scores that could change, but Coach Fran is pretty set in his ways.

This true freshman sounds similar to a true freshman that we started against Texas State 2 years ago. I'd say Brett Smith has turned out to be very good.

We have faced a dual threat QB already (NE's Taylor Martinez) and faired ok against him.

no doubt. no one here is banking on our offense turning heads. It has been our biggest weakness.

Our defense on the other hand, has given up only 3 offensive TDs all year. We're hoping a new qb might help the offense carry their weight.

We gave up only 2 offensive TDs last week to Texas Tech, and both came off bobcat errors resulting in bad field position. 1 came after a poorly executed surprise onside kick. (illegal touching call) and the 2nd was after an unconverted fake punt. A 3rd TD was an unforced fumble (bad hand off) that was returned for a defensive TD. Our run D and RZ D are both currently ranked in the top 10 in the country which is why we are excited about it. Do I think it is strong enough to win? I dont know. The odds aren't in our favor with our O struggling.

Do I think Wyoming's O will put up 40 plus on us? No. Texas Tech couldn't do that and they were in front of a record breaking 60,000 fan home crowd.

I think the key difference here is Wyoming's QB, he's a veteran guy, where Baker Mayfield and Webb are both freshmen and our D definitely made them look like FRs. Smith will make smarter decisions with the ball, but I'm confident the Texas State D will test Smith's ability to pass under heavy pressure. If he trys to run over our linebackers, they will test his ability to take brutal hits.

If smith can handle that, he will get plenty of yardage through the air, our pass coverage is still a work in progress.

How's your guys' O-line playing? Are they big, small and athletic? You run the pistol correct?
our oline is very young and one of our weaknesses. That has been a big cause of our offensive struggles, which is another reason we desperately need a mobile QB. We have alot of potential there. They are much better than last year, but I think they are going to need another year to develop.

Lol...Smith will, without a doubt, be able to handle to pressure Texas State puts on him....Like easily.
And yeah, Smith will run over many players on the defense, including linebackers.

Brutal hits? Nebraska has some big time hitters, and well, Smith did fine.

+10

well smith will face a heavy pass rush. I'm confident in that much.

our defense is ranked much higher than nebraska's at the moment. SOS has alot to do with that I know, but our D held their own against one of the best offenses in the country at Texas Tech, we gave them fits all night... so I would caution you not to laugh at them. Karma can be funny that way. Texas Tech fans thought they were going to put 50-60 points on us too...

nebraska has some talented LBs yes, but we have great LBs too. that is our strongest/deepest position. I feel comfortable saying that Orakpo is better than any linebacker Nebraska has. Barring injury, he is a future NFL draft pick and possibly the best LB you've seen all year to this point.

At minimum, TXST's defense is the 2nd best defense you will have faced so far this year.

Again, I'm not saying we're gonna win. Just that our D is no cupcake.
