If you don't know, he's about to get paid. I haven't talked to my inside guys on this, but I'm 100 percent confident that he's going to get extended and get a raise, after the season finishes and the bowl/t.v. money is determined.
So, what is he worth? Should he be getting as much as Bobo, Deruyter, or Harsin? They all made/make around 1.5 million a year. Should he be paid more? Has he done enough to deserve the highest salary in the MWC?
His staff deserves a raise. Russell Dennison deserves a raise. Craig Bohl deserves a raise.
We've already made 1.0 million in bonus money with another .5 million almost guaranteed as long as we don't shit the bed before the UNM game. We're likely going to receive 1.5 in t.v. bonus money this year to distribute. In addition, if we make the MWC championship game, we'll likely get another 300 thousand dollars in bonus money. Our attendance has risen from a 2015 average of 18 K per game to a 2016 average of 22 k per game. That number could go up if the SDSU and Utah State games average more than 22 K. That's an additional 700,000 dollars on ticket revenue if each ticket is sold at 30 dollars a piece. That 700,000 pays every year as long as we maintain the attendance bump. Next year we host Oregon, so that looks easy for the foreseeable future. How much in additional consessions is the attendance bump worth, I don't know, but we're looking at 3/4 of a million more in revenue this year than last.
Now here is where it gets interesting. It's not out of the realm of possibility that we make the Cotton bowl game. A lot of things would have to fall into place, but our chances of getting there have to be almost as good as WKU, SDSU, or any of the AAC teams. If we win out, we'll be in the conversation. That bowl game would pay us somewhere around 8 million dollars. I only mention this because maybe it's a carrot to dangle to the staff. Make it to the Cotton Bowl game and the entire pay-out goes into your new 2.5 million a year contract.
Also, you have to look at this as an up front payment in case we have to replace Bohl. If he does leave, someone has to pay the full buy-out. If that's 2 million a year over 5 and we have three years left to pay, that means we have 6 million to invest in the new coach. If he stays here the whole time, then you hope he's worth the 2 million a year.
I'm just spit balling numbers and ideas here. I'm sure some of my estimates aren't exactly right, but they should be pretty damn close. I think Bohl and staff are worth the highest salary in the MWC, but I'm not sure how high. I think, the higher the better, because if he stays here, I'm pretty damn confident we're going to line up some title banners and paint the War with a bunch of new bowl games. If that costs 2.5 million a year, then so be it.
Personally, I think we should pay him as much as we possibly can, extend him as long as we possibly can, reward all of his staff with big raises to make them as comfortable as possible, and do everything in our power to keep his staff in tact and here as long as we can keep them.
What do you think Poke fans? How much should Craig Bohl and staff get paid?
