Should Craig Bohl be the highest paid coach in the MWC?

Bohl's made a crap load in incentives this year. I would give him 1.3-1.5m in annual guaranteed salary and give him and his staff some hefty incentives.

We might want to relax and see what happens.

Agreed. We are a pretty entertaining bunch. Hot and cold. Bipolar.

Thank the lord that our coaches and athletes only read the other shitty old fucker pay-to-post board, and not this one. ;)

I don't think you guys understand. If we "throw the bank" at Bohl we're going to have university staff "literally crying" over their newspaper.:)

Ticket prices are high enough the way they are (by Wyo standards) if he gets paid like you are talking then this will take effect. Guess this is one good reason Wyo is on TV as much as it is, for those that think ticket prices are too high and only gonna get higher. just sayin....get ready for it it's coming. I agree wholeheartedly we need to sign him to a longer term but saying that does happen remember we have a history of being a stepping stone mentality and it's hard to get excited about things when we all know $ talks and if he wants to give it shot elsewhere when that phone call comes, it's the reality of where we live. That's why I guess it's cool to live in the moment and see what happens. GO POKES

Do you know anyone on that board? I used to read it -- just read it -- before they made people pay for that privilege too.

And...that hot and cold thing: I guess it's the nature of sports fandom in general, and probably worse for us, as every glimmer of hope for football has been cruelly squashed for a long, long time.

If he wins a conference championship this season, YES. He and his staff should all get hefty raises and Bohl should be the highest paid in the league.

If they don't win the championship, a raise is definitely in order but not highest in league.

I know a few - some laugh and keep it light (taking it for what it is worth), others take it pretty seriously...to each their own I guess. Don't get me wrong, I wouldn't mind paying a little to keep this board up and running, but the manner in which they went about things back in 2009 was a joke, especially if you weren't one of the owner-chosen circle jerkers.

It truly is the way of the Wyoming fan - hot & cold. That is why, I believe, winning is so very sweet for us. We have been put through the ringer, for decades at a time. It brought a tear to my eye when we won the MWC basketball tourney in 2015, and it brought a tear to my eye watching the football team celebrate taking down a ranked conference team at home last Saturday.

Outside of those 2 recent events, we have rarely had a glimmer. We had the 2009 New Mexico bowl against Fresno State, the Women's NIT Championship in 2007, the Las Vegas Bowl against UCLA in 2004, and the 2002 NCAA tourney game against Gonzaga (and some in-season games). That's 15 years...with just a little bit to celebrate.

To steal your quote!!! as I'm not tech savvy, lol

AGREED, when you go so long between conference titles, get brought down to the depths of the swamp (i.e. Vic Koenning years) watch your teams when you were in school 88-93 and be truly successful. All I want is to taste that every so often. I drove all night from Cheyenne to LV to the SDSU MWC Tourney and saw one Helluva game...went to Seattle to the NCAA tourney, drove both times to the New Mexico Bowl 1st time wonderful experience, 2nd not so much. I go to one away game year in and year out in football, go to as many bball games, all the football games I can...etc......I just want to experience what it's like to feel good for a change, I know I've talked bad about many, many things over the course of the downturn etc... It's ok to toot our own horn for a change. 2015 basketball an 2016 football, I/WE are due!!!!! I bleed so much Brown and Gold it's like 2nd nature to me. Albeit it'll probably never be for a National Title, let me/us have our due!!!!
So much fun!!!! GO POKES

Still a bit early for this conversation. If he gets us into the CCG, then we need to start looking at a total package of $2M+ and another $750k to spread around the staff to have a chance of keeping him for another three seasons...

Yeah, it is, but it's the conversation that's going on right now in Burman's office, so we might as well get out in front of it. As long as Wyoming doesn't shit the bed this year, this is coming as soon as the t.v./bowl distribution is determined and the wrinkles get ironed out.

As long as he doesn't crash and burn to finish the season, I think we need to throw every available dollar we can scrape together at him.
Cause when has that ever happened?
I don't see it happening. We may not win out, but I do think Bohl is a coach that doesn't "blow smoke" and knows how to win. He's talked about his "formula" and believe it's working, maybe sooner than even he expected. EMU shouldn't have happened, but these kids have grown light years since that game. I believe we win another three at least and possibly win out - hope I'm not wrong. I think we should be talking about money and how we keep Bohl.

How did Sonny Lubick rank, money wise, in the conference?

Cool. The Sports Zone is talking about this exact subject right now. Should/will Craig Bohl be the highest paid coach in the MWC next season?

Thanks Sports Zone dudes. I'm glad you're bringing more exposure to this subject.

Bohl deserves the money in my book.

Brilliant. :thumb:

What, exactly are "Wyo standards" as it relates to the cost of things?

I know right now he deserves a unanimous vote for coach of the year as he far exceeded expectations

Craig Bohl's last year at NDSU - he signed an 8 year contract at $206,000 with a 5% yearly increase (plus whatever incentives he had.

He now has a base salary worth $300,000 and the maximum he can make via incentives is $1.1 million.

I like how Wyoming structures these. But if we have a damn fine year this year, he does need a raise.

This is a great discussion on the Sports Zone. Good job Keith, Monty, and Jeremiah.

Nice work fellas.

I think the consensus among the group is that although the gesture to make him the highest paid coach would be valuable, the investment in money towards the program is the important part. Paying the assistants is the important part.

Some investment in football is coming. Attendance is up by 4,000, with two late season games on the schedule still. We're looking at a probable 1.5 million in bonus t.v. money. There's definitely some money there for a larger commitment by the athletics department to the football program.

I agree with Monty though. I think Bohl would say no to highest paid MWC coach. He wants that money for his assistants. Wyoming definitely needs to flex it's financial muscle towards the football team. Making Bohl the highest paid coach would come at the expense of the assistants. Monty's right. That would be more important to Craig.

The gesture to Craig Bohl is important. It's important for him to know that he's important to us. It's important for potential new coaches to know that there's money here.

In the end, I think Bohl will go back to Nebraska just like Devaney. I know he isn't going to retire here.
Getting a raise in the football coaching budget is important. Someone is likely to buy Bohl out. You get paid whatever he left on his contract on his buy-out. The assistants deserve a raise. Now's the time to up that coaching contract.

I'm betting the assistants will get a nice little bump in salary. Craig will probably get a small raise as well.

Anyway, that was a kick-ass radio show.

Good job Sports Zone.

Damn. I was typing fast there, combined 4000, the number of people, with about 700,000, the approximate amount of revenue it would generate.

One number to rule them all.

I think he's already past $1 million for this season, considering he gets $850,000 just for getting out of bed. He's already got an extra $80k for the 4 MWC victories, his $50k speaker fee, $25k for a bowl game and a few assorted GPA and season ticket sales incentives I would assume.

If we need to jack him up a bit to keep him, I agree. But they can't break the Bank of Wyoming, unless we see more positive results. Beating Boise State was very huge on many accounts, but we also lost to Eastern Michigan. I think some more positive results and consistancy and they'll do everything within reason to keep him. Most years at NDS he pulled a huge victory out of his ass, considering he had an FCS team. I hope Saturday wasn't his one yearly upset. Lets get a few more victories this year. Don't get me wrong, I believe he is exactly what we need, but the powers that be will need to see more results.

UW football coach Craig Bohl is in his third year of a five-year contract, and Burman said initial conversations have begun to extend his contract, or perhaps create a new deal.

“We are going to do everything we can to keep coach Bohl at the University of Wyoming as long as we can,” Burman said.

Burman said the UW Board of Trustees is aware of the talks.

“We’ve moving forward and hoping we can get something that works for everyone, and we will,” Burman said.

The night before the 2011 New Mexico Bowl, UW reached a new contract with former coach Dave Christensen after some schools showed interest in luring him away.

“If somebody comes knocking on coach Bohl’s door, then it expedites things,” Burman said.
