Shades of Vic Koenning

From one of the most recent articles, and I quote...

' "When asked what's it going to take to get it straightened out, Christensen said": "I have no idea right now." '

I'll be damned If this isn't an exact quote from the 2001 - 2002 Koenning led Cowboys.

Uh oh.

Not even in the same ball park. DC has almost won more games this year alone that Vic did in 3. And those were the worst 3 years of Cowboy football I have witnessed.

We had a bad game and Utah State played the best game of their programs existence. If we don't beat the snot out of UNLV this weekend, I'll be more worried.

I beg to differ. The comment, as quoted, is identical.

The timing (as you pointed out) may be different...but the feeling / paradigm is spot on.

You could also argue that, as a whole, the MWC was better in the Koenning era. If Wyoming goes 5-7 this year, its not because they're making progress. Its because their playing freaking Texas State, Weber State, New Mexico, etc.

I bet just about every coach in America has said that comment at some point. The difference is that Koenning said it on a weekly basis. By the way where is Koenning these days?

This may not be popular but I liked Dana Dimel. I still believe that with him running the offense and Vic running the D, this program may have not sunk so low. Vic was not a good HC but I think we all agree he is a very capable D coordinator.

I was a big fan of the Dimel offense: http://www.scribd.com/doc/34132857/1999-Wyoming-Triple-Shoot-Offense

The triple shoot is a good offense, but you really need the right type of players to run it effectively. We don't have what we would need to run it at WR or TE. It's like giving Wyoming Nevada's Pistol offense and letting them run it. We wouldn't be as productive as they are, because we don't have the players for that type of offense.

Any style offense or defense can look good with the right talent. It's not so much about the X's and O's as it is the talent and execution. I'm not a big fan of the spread but it can win, just as a triple option offense can win. I thought we did some really unique things offensively under Dimel and why I posted that playbook.

But all of it doesn't matter if we cannot stop anyone on defense. The defense must be the foundation of a football team. You put your 11 best players on defense, period. Unfortunately we are not doing that and CDC has made questionable decisions moving guys from defense to offense.

Vic Koenning

Yeah, seems like he's doing well as a defensive coordinator. Who'd have thunk?

Koenning was (and is) a great defensive coordinator. He just isn't a head coach. I dont really have hard feelings for him. He was just in over his head. I'm guessing he is more than happy to stay a def coord for the rest of his career.

It also remains to be seen if Dave Christensen can be successful moving from OC to HC. I'm wondering though if he was given enough money in his budget when he arrived to hire the assistants/coordinators he wanted or if he had to settle for some others.

I respectfully disagree. My opinion of Dana Dimel and Manny Matsakis is not dissimilar to my feelings of Tiller taking a safety or "Billy" Cockhill calling a game offensively. My personal belief is that Dimel and his staff recruiting in the late 90's with a segue to Vic Koenning head coaching at the turn of the century ruined, perhaps permanently, any semblance of Wyoming football ever again having a positive national perception or competitive team. Not to mention the cocktail of Lee Moon, Gary Barta and God Bless him, he's trying but failing, Tom Burman.

Again, respectfully disagreeing is all. I also didn't like Dimel in the booth more than on the sidelines it seemed like, or his much publicized marital indiscretions or his stupid fat face sprinting off to Houston, of all places. A pox on him, Lee Moon, Hans Mueh, John Marinatto, Bill Hancock, and any BYU fan in the world. College football and the teams I care about are dying a slow death.

A melodramatic rant for sure, but it seems every morning these days I read about yet another thing that seems to anally dry rape my Wyoming fandom. Ugh.

That might be the funniest line I've read in a while.

Funny because it's true, and I agree with him. I feel the same way.

I agree as well. It is bad enough that we (as UW fans) have to struggle through mediocrity mired shit in what has been know as cowboy football the last 12 or so years (and cowboy basketball the last 7 or so years)...we also have inept leaders at the helm of UW athletics...and to top it off we have conference jumping / expansion / desertion.

And people ask why Wyoming fans drink as much as we do?

BIG difference between Koenning and CDC. Koenning said "I have no idea" and you could see the deer in the headlight look and you believed he really had no idea and was just hoping to get fired so he wouldn't have to worry about it anymore. CDC says "I have no idea" and you can see he's thinking about who's ass he's going to kick and just not wanting to make that public.
