I remember those days. Rather have him be pessimistic.

Initial thought is 4-8. Progress. More depth in the lines. RBs depth bringing in a new QB, that will last more than one year. Oh! And we have a Kicker
At best: 6-6... BOWL!! We overachieve and steal one or two and win the ones we need to.
At worst: 2-10. I may begin to question where the problem lies. O or D or coaching.

I will wait until the kicks start flying before I say we have a kicker. Sullivan was a recruited kicker too

I really wish we could just have our first 4 conference games at home, and not have to deal with the often discussed issues with November home games (weather, hunting, night kickoffs, etc.)

That, and if we could afford not playing at big schools, get as many home games as possible during OOC.

Load up on patsies, and don't leave Laramie until October.
Ha. Good joke. Your boys at Oregon State don't have the money to do that so why would Wyoming? I think saying 2-10 is low balling this team. I'd be amazed if your Beavers have a better record next year than the Cowboys but that's me.

Well for what it's worth, since 1999 Wyoming has only ended up winning more games than the Beavers one time. So I don't know if it's as much of a lock you might think it is.
But your saltiness for Oregon State aside, 2-10 is kind of low balling them, you're right, but at the same time, what has the team done to make people think they will be good?
Hell, even last season I predicted we would go to a bowl game. Only to see us get dominated by North Dakota and Eastern Michigan...at home.

We could beat NIU at home, I won't rule that out. But as of now, NIU is ahead of us big time. They had 8 wins last season, in what was a down year for them. I think they are coming off 40+ wins the last 4 years.

@Nebraska... Mike Riley tends to get out to slow starts, but Wyo should still be very over-matched vs the Huskers.

UC-Davis. We should win that. We better win that.

Eastern Michigan... any time you see EMU on the schedule you count that as a win. But wait, we got worked by them last season. So no way in hell is that a lock by any means. Still should grab a win.

@CSU... I think they are clearly ahead of us, and it's on the road. But it's a rivalry game so anything can happen.

AFA. Similar to CSU, they are just a better program currently than us, but we do stand a chance.

@Nevada... Although we beat them last season, I think Nevada will want revenge for what was an ugly bump in the road for what ended up being a solid season overall.

Boise State... yeah right.

Utah State... Possible, it's in Laramie. They blew us out last season though. Have they lost enough, and have we gained enough to close that gap?

@UNLV... If the team is losing as much as I think the schedule sets them up to be, the team will be 2-7. And 8-25 under Bohl. This is why I think the team packs it in. If we get to this point, the writing will be on the wall and the coaching staff will start freshening up those resumes. If we are doing a little better than I expected, something like 4-5 at this point, yeah I will say we can win this game.

SDSU... They blew us out last season and should be good again. Expect more of the same.

@NM... NM has turned into a half-way decent program again, and could need this win to go bowling, where we could be staring another 2 win season in the face.

Is it selling them short? Maybe. Not any worse than last season was though.
Is it pessimistic? Yes.
Would I still love to be proven wrong? Hell yeah I would!

Nothing would be better than getting a surprise win over NIU and going into Lincoln and upsetting the Huskers, smashing an FCS team, and smashing Eastern Michigan, and being 4-0 headed into the Border War.
Hell I would love to go bowling at 6-6.

Until we start seeing results in terms of wins and losses though, there is nothing to get excited about. It's all been hype and talk about how someday we will be good, while losing and getting blown out.

Do you ever stop? The team never packed it in last year and didn't in Bohl's first year. I can give two shits about your predictions, but to say the team will pack it in....just stop.

HA! Do you ever stop with your delusional pollyanna slobber? Here's an article from October where Brian Hill is quoted as saying they gave up the year before against Boise State. It's what anyone who hadn't deeply and uncomfortably keistered their own head could see clearly; the team packed it in.

We all want to see a 6-1 team next season. The non-retarded however, whose foreheads don't smell like butt, have actually seen the players that have taken the field the last several years and have tempered expectations.

And never forget: Steve. Stanard.

Pretty much this

Critical year. If you hang your hat on being a developmental program and chalk up the worst year in WYO history to youth, then there needs to be substantial improvement the following year. We now have experienced youth and that is not the same as what we had last year.

Teams that are on the verge of breakout typically have a year "under the radar". The record isn't necessarily good but nobody really likes to play them either. Usually, only fans of the team or fans of teams in the conference notice.

I hope that is where we are this year. We might only win 3-5 games but we only lose by an average of 3-7 points for the majority of the rest and few if any games get away from us before the 4th quarter.

That is kind of what I'm looking for this year and would be ecstatic with 6+ wins. A disappointment will be only 0-5 wins with the majority of games well out of hand by the 3rd quarter or earlier.

Very good post. I wholeheartedly agree.

Let me start with this, I understand your role on here right now is the sarcastic, pessimistic asshole but I think you crossed the line to annoying douche a long time ago when talking about Cowboy football. But anyways, your Beavs went 2-10 and couldn't beat the laughing stock of the Pac-12 Colorado at home last year. With the Pac-12 going to 9 game conference schedules, where do you expect them to find wins as they went winless in conference last year? Just saying they have a long road to haul.

Enough about the roadkill that is the Beavers though, how many Wyoming football games did you actually watch last year? I watched 10 of 12 and they're a lot closer to getting wins than reading the box score might indicate. Lack of depth hurt last year against Air Force. If Allen doesn't get hurt, we beat Eastern Michigan. I will admit the three games we had poor showings were Boise State, Utah State, and San Diego State. But moving forward, we graduated 8 seniors? Who besides Eddie Yarbrough will be greatly missed? It's all about talent, experience, and depth moving forward. While they might not jump to the conference this year, there are going to be more positives than in years past. Rome wasn't built in a day and it's hard to build a football program in a couple of years if you aren't a team like Alabama. But that's just my :twocents: .

As usual, spot on.

Maybe its just me...but I really like the thought of at home on November 19 against San Diego State.

I would not be surprised if SDSU comes in ranked and the "up and coming" Cowboys knock them off in a brutally cold game.

2-10 isn't pessimistic. That's realistic. EMU beat us at home by 19 and we lost by less than our average loss.
Sometimes there is more to the story than the score. Wyoming was looking good when Josh Allen was the quarterback. But things fell apart when 3rd string QB Nick Smith was forced into action. They only outgained us by 50 yards...and Smith was 3-13 for no yards.

Something else to remember...this was the 2nd game for a bunch of guys playing college ball for the 1st time (Wyoming started a lot of true freshman) and all but one linebacker had played linebacker before. The defense did improve quite a bit as the season rolled on.

One more thing.....if you want to throw out Eastern Michigan for the reason we won't be much improved next year....I'll throw out Nevada. Nevada was a bowl team who beat CSU in their bowl. Wyoming manhandled them.....but lost one of the best receivers in the country for the season. Wyoming was very thin at WR, so losing Gentry hurt big time.

JimmyDimes said:

Is there really though?

Now Nevada, we "manhandled" them in the 2nd qtr and came close to giving it away holding on to win by 7.

As far as I can tell, 2 wins this season is realistic and going bowling the season after being one of the worst teams in DI a dream come true.

Not to derail the topic as this fairly unrelated...

However, I do recall the game being a warm sunny day and I did have a few adult beverages prior to kickoff...that said, your "looking good" is much different than mine. Even when Josh Allen was in the game, our defense couldn't be described as anything but terrible. EMU moved the ball and put up points at will. We did put up a lot of yards on the ground in the second half (after the game had long since been decided) against what could be argued as the worst rushing defense in the entire country. Josh Allen would not have changed the outcome of that game. It is sad to say, but a 1-11 MAC team (with its lone win over Wyoming) was the much better team on the field that day.

Offense was looking good. Wyoming was moving the ball and Josh was impressive IMO. As soon as Allen got hurt, the momentum changed. Smith had many opportunities but couldn't hit the broadside of a barn. Probably the worst QB performance I have ever seen. To Smith's credit, he did improve as the season moved along. The D was green, as I mentioned...but the offense was moving the ball and EMU didn't have an answer for Allen in the two series he played.

It was the 2nd game of the year....and IMO, the Nevada and UNLV games are more of an indicator than that game.

Had Allen not gotten hurt I think we would have won in a shoot out.
