Sawvel - Portal Thoughts

Why wouldn't he and his staff kick the tires on the upper-echelon of the transfer portal? "Hey, come finish the last year of your college career and get great exposure here at Wyoming! - We have world-class facilities, and can really help you achieve goals at the next level." Instead it seems he is shopping lower division and low end G5 programs.

I personally have more faith in the Division 2 all star than the Iowa state 3rd stringer who never saw the field. At least one of those players has proven they can play in a real game setting.

Hard to argue that the Fort Lewis players haven’t been some of our top basketball players the past few years.

Money.

All of those upper-echelon transfers are being offered money, and lots of it, to transfer to various schools. There is no way Wyoming can compete in that aspect.

There have been transfers from larger schools, but you're totally right that he's been shopping the lower levels. Savel said that he had a long talk with Dilligham about his approach, which is largely the same as we're seeing in Laramie now.
That worries me is saw listened to Bohl on other topics

Didn't Sawvel state that is his philosophy? Take lower division guys that are "hungry" or something like that

I have more faith as well. But I am not talking about a 3rd string bench player from wherever. I am talking about the high end 4* / 5* that could be a big fish in a small pond.

And I don't want to compare hoops to football...different beast all the way around.

If there's one thing we've learned from transfers from Power 4 schools, they almost never work out. They either hate the school, or can't play, or both.
I am not sure I have ever seen a top 4* or 5* kid (with playing experience, not a bench player) ever come to Wyoming, but the sample size is quite small.

That is what I was thinking was the primary roadblock, that we will likely never play a factor in.

It's a different world in terms of transfers and what is allowed as far as player compensation for sure...but the reasons that Wyoming never got that recruit in the past still remain. When you are competing for commitments, you generally either are in the position where recruits desire to be with you or you are in a position where recruits "end up" with you....Unfortunately, Wyoming is in a group of the latter. Now that is a huge group of schools so it's not like we are alone there.

SMU can get those guys…because they have donors willing to pay absurd amounts to bring them in. I don’t see many Wyoming donors that foolish with their money.

It’s actually really simple now. The biggest factor for the large majority of high end recruits/transfers is how much money are they being offered. If Wyoming showed up to Quinn Ewers with a $15 million check, he would come here regardless as to whether he can identify Laramie on a map.

I have some eligibility left, I would be happy to show up for $15 Million anywhere .

I hope these players work out for Wyoming. If so likely some will transfer.

But, if Sawvel tries to gaslight me again about which player is better such as he did with the QB position last year, I’m out until he’s gone. It means he’s beyond hope. I’m hopeful he’s different. I’ll still never understand that whole debacle.
