Wow. The CST finally hired a beat writer with skin in the game. Is this a shift from the idea of hiring college grads with no experience from out of state?
Maybe they're finally starting to realize they're losing readers because no Wyoming fan is interested in reading Missouri and Mississippi grads opinions on UW.
Welcome back Ryan.
To be fair, CST is a bit of a steeping stone for sportswriters unless you find that person that wants to be in Wyoming over the bigger sports writing positions. Looks like that is the case here of Thorburn wanting to come back to Wyoming.
Liked his article today.
I agree. That CST beat writer position isn't a very desirable one except for Wyoming fans. They don't help themselves by paying a salary that brings in college graduates with zero work experience.
My problem with the CST is they forget who their audience is. I bought the CST for 20 years and the ONLY reason I purchased it was because of Wyoming athletics articles. I didn't read cooking with Sal or any of the other crap they put in the paper. I just bought it for Wyoming football and basketball. I'm sure there are a lot of Wyoming fans that did the same. If that's the case, why wouldn't you keep that in mind when you decide what articles to run? Maybe a series of articles about Wyoming dropping down a division ISN'T a good idea. Maybe you should edit the articles to remove the east coast arrogance that your writers fill the articles with, even though they're supposed to be writing for Wyoming fans.
If you're going to hire green college graduates you should prioritize guys that are from this part of the country. At least those guys would know the teams that are in the league they're covering without having to memorize it the first day on the job. They would have an understanding of the political climate and athletics history of this region of the country.
Hiring Ryan Thorburn was the best decision the CST has made in 20 years. I might have to renew my subscription to the CST now.
