Reflection on the season

I think that if Josh Allen had not been injured, we'd be 9-3 and there'd be a great push to see an Allen/Rosen showdown in Arizona in a bowl. Having said that, we lost two easily winnable games due to this injury and it makes us feel like this year was worse than last. The difference this year was focused on Allen and the QB position but the true difference wasn't Allen, it was Brian Hill......

Our defense played well and was way better than last year. Brian Hill made our opponents play run first and that allowed for Josh Allen to emerge as a force. As last year progressed, our team went to Allen as our first option and defense's focused then on Allen and guess what, he struggled in every game from New Mexico on.

Same thing this year, teams focus on Allen and not the run....they know we can't run the ball and it is easy to stop Josh. Brian Hill brought fear into opponents minds and when Josh Allen became the man.....we lost our mojo....

Now.... before you get off base, go back and look at Allen's stats from New Mexico on...... Losing Hill as our go-to was our downfall and losing him to the NFL was the death of Josh Allen as a huge impact player. Hill would have changed everything and we'd maybe be 10-2 now.

I see this year as progress because I think that the Allen injury screwed us. Yeah we should be able to beat SJSU with me at QB but with Allen, we beat both SJSU and Fresno State easily in my opinion. I see us as a 9-3 team really. Anytime you lose big time players, it's tough, especially when you lose your QB or RB early to the NFL. For us, it's worse than other schools because we don't have four star kids just glad to wait for a shot. In BB when we lost Nance, Adams wasn't the same and it seems like we may never recover but we have. In FB, it was hard to replace Brett Smith but we did. Who will be the next stud for us? I doubt the sky is falling.

Josh was one of the leading scorers in the nation the year after Larry. He was incredibly fun to watch his Senior season. I totally agree with your point though. I honestly didn't know what we were going to do without Leonard Washington then Larry grew out of his baby giraffe body and the rest was history.

Let me clarify about Adams, I was trying to make the point of not winning and if I remember correctly, he was scoring a great deal from the free throw line. I'm not saying that he wasn't good but it was tough for him. But yeah... just look at Adams and Nance.... seems like we're starting to get our mojo back from their loss. We will be ok. I'm not saying that Bohl is Lombardi but he was an Allen injury away from being 9-3 after an 8 win season. Everyone has injuries but when you lose your best player on offense who is your QB.... you rarely win. I think that our program is fine. Let's hope we get a new OC and that our new QB will be an up and coming stud. Our defense will be there.

I'm glad everyone's giving Bohl a pass. If he had put this team in the conference that had BYU, Utah, and Boise state, we would not have been 7-5. He's never had to play TCU, and Boise state is on a downward trend since Peterson left. We only beat one team with a winning record (csewe). I don't say we should get rid of him, but I'm not ready to anoint him as the next Vince Lombardi. This team won a number of close games that could have gone the other way. We've had some of the worst losses in school history with Bohl. I think next year without Allen will be very interesting.

I will take a pass on this year's bowl game. Hey JC in the Rock, you wanted the Nick Smith era to start. You happy now?

I feel like our receivers are a great receivers coach away from understanding how to get speration on the field.

Not sure who is coaching them but my guess it's a positional coach pulling double duty.

We need a dedicated receivers coach that is experienced as a receiver and I'm not sure we have one and if we do he isn't doing a very good job.

Overall I'm absolutely amazed with the defensive effort all year and can't wait to see them a year more mature.

Mike Grant is our wide receivers coach and is only coaching the wide receivers. He was their coach last year as well. He coached wide recievers and running backs at North Texas prior to coming to UW and played quarterback at Nebraska in the late 80s.

It still feels as if things would've gone differently with even more Overstreet, though. I don't necessarily mind calling plays where he runs to the edge, but you've got to actually block for plays like that. His loss run and one of his short runs were both calls like that which simply had no blocking, and one or two unblocked defenders got to him instantly.

I was encouraged by what I saw from him, though. He'll be a junior next season, and he'll fully trust his knee game one - plus, he should be even stronger. It's not entirely out of the question that he'll play at 225 lbs rather than the 216 he started this season at. But then again, are we even going to use him as much as his play deserves?

That's what pisses me off most. I can't find any logical explanation for why you don't use your player who is giving you what offensive spark you have. Its almost like Vigen tries too hard or makes things too complicated for himself. Lately he has been getting too cute with things like the Border War when we were at the 1 yard line and instead of Josh getting the call I believe a sweep was called to Woods and we lose 4 or 5 yards.

I mean, it's one thing to adjust as the other team is adjusting to what's working... but when it continues to work and they can't stop it, maybe continue until they prove they can stop it? I honestly think Overstreet would've run it into the endzone himself on a couple of those drives if we had just let him continue to cruise up the middle... and I'm not a huge fan of those up-the-middle runs in general, but when they work because the other team can't get in the holes fast enough (unless Woods is running)? Just do it!

This was the most perplexing turn of events of all of them. The coaches have been bitching about wanting to establish a run game all year. We finally get one and find a back who was kicking ass and they never went back to him in the 4th. He broke that huge run late in the third and I don't think he had but 1 or 2 more touches after that... It was craziness

I'm pretty sure that the WR coach teaches them how to separate. I'm positive that they work on the same type of drills and skills that all football coaches do in college programs across the nation. We have capable players, they just need to grow in the program. We have to remember that Allen was throwing to seniors last year and had a running back that kept the secondary looking into the backfield for a second. Playing time pays off and each season focuses players for strength and conditioning and skill development in the off season.

Seems like a long time ago now, but I'm pretty sure the run was working very well when we were up 21 at AF too and Vigen unnecessarily called that weird double pass that likely ended JA's college career. Pfft!

I think Vigen's offense is largely built on the assumption that the offense will have better, more disciplined players that win the 1 on 1 matchup.

The spread tries to get players in space and offset talent discrepancies. It seemed like a lot of Peterson's offenses at BSU (in their really good years) would overload the area they were trying to get the ball to.

I need to go back and look at recordings so correct me if I'm wrong but isn't Vigen's o predicated on winning 1 on 1 vs overloading point of attack, creating mismatches, etc.?

The power run plays must work in practice or they would not be using them. The same plays that were successfully used at NDSU. So it is likely the players or the coaching, or a combination of both. I was talking to the local high school offensive line coach about the lack of power run offense. He commented that the struggles are not unexpected with a freshman center no matter how much potential he has. Which brings up the question why was not there a center already in the pipeline in year 4 that could step in?

I would expect there will be changes in the offensive coaching staff, with the replacement(s) probably being coaches Bohl has closely worked with in the past.

I too think we will see a shake up of offensive coaching personnel this offseason. Bohl cannot be happy with how his offense performed.

Anyone heard any names of who may be looked at for Strength coach? I know the listing says the job doesnt start until January 1 but would be interested in any names being brought up.
