Quarterback's Not Sliding

ragtimejoe1 said:
Teaching them to not slide under any circumstance is different than teaching them to slide only when necessary and coaching them on when it is necessary. Wyo2Dal hit the nail on the head.

If it gets out, how many parents of blue chip QBs will want their son in that type of philosophy?

I still need more evidence, but it is kind of a big deal if it is true, IMO.

Hang on a second, not to Joshvankempenmonkeyboy you, but this was basically our QB's first D1 action - first start - first for a lot for him. Maybe, just maybe, our QB made a mistake and thought that running through the Safety was a good idea?

This is a dumb thread. It was Josh's first D1 action. It's pretty easy to see a guy excited to out there and in the rush of excitement in his first action not make the smartest play. I highly doubt him running into the safety was anything but pure adrenaline in the heat of the moment. Josh is a tall guy, he probably thought at the moment (not smartly)," I can plow this MOFO over!" And then he got welcomed to D1 football.

That is kind of my thinking as well...

Ok, I am going to address this in detail one time and then lets move on because it is kinda a dead horse. What is done is done. Our QBs are instructed to never slide.... did you hear that NEVER! I cannot say that it is a Coach Bohl thing but I can definitely say that it is an OC thing. They are told in practice that if they slide it is a sign of weakness and they will not play. Fact is if they slide they are pulled from action to prove the point! I have first hand knowledge of that happening. So with that info it is what it is.......I guarantee no coach is going to confirm this in a public forum whether it is on a radio call in show, and interview, or in the paper. You can believe me or tell me I am full of shit but the bottom line is it doesn't matter. There are certain "trade secrets" that will never be privy to the public, so technically that makes all of this purely speculation.

I agree with this post.

This thread should die soon, but I have to say that regardless of whatever this guy has previously said being right or not, this just doesn't add up. A quarterback is judged on a lot more important things than whether he slides or not. I highly doubt that had Josh slid he would have been pulled from the game to prove a point, or that Cam will be pulled on Saturday for sliding. This just doesn't add up. Pretty much every player gets a rude awakening to D1 athletics when they discover they can't plow over a safety or tackle a running back or whatever. Josh's rude awakening for us unfortunately for us was his collarbone.

There's plenty of valid questions surrounding the program right now but this to me seems to be over the top.

Everybodies beloved Brett Smith rarely ever slid, didn't see many complaining about that. So why now? Are we just trying to find something to complain about? Are we just trying to find answers for why we are losing?
I agree that this is blown way out of proportion.

And if the coaches didn't want them to slide, they wouldn't be wearing red in practices. You would want these guys to get hit so they knew how to escape a tackle, or take a hit...

Problem is Smith was fast and elusive and he never ran head on into a wall he went around it or over it. But I yell for him to slide in CFL games and he is listening :thumb:

That's not true, he was definitely told to slide if somebody waited for him like that safety, and I recall him doing exactly that as well. He drew penalties by sliding and still getting hit a few times as well. This sounds more like selective memory.

IF what Slow Hand says is correct, I'm disturbed. This is pretty much the same level of bad as Calhoun putting concussed players back in the game. Our OC should not get a pass just because he happens to wear brown and gold.

Very "rare" he slid. I recall him taking on a safety and an LB against Texas St.
I also recal the Toledo game where smith took on the safety. I recall a Nevada comeback when he took on two LBs. The list goes on and on... Out of what I saw from Allen he was athletic like Smith, hence, his run in and passing ability. So again, other than injury what is the difference?

After reading this thread it make a lot more sense as to why Cam didn't run when he had obvious opportunities to vs. UND.

I noticed Coffman was extremely reluctant to run against UND. Wonder if the no sliding thing played into that. It's incredibly short sighted not to slide in the hopes of gaining an extra yard or two. Definitely not worth it when it put Brett Smith out with multiple concussions and it wasn't worth it when Allen broke his collar bone. And now the team and fans have to pay for it.

He slid a lot more then you remember because it's not as exciting to see someone slide. Multiple times against Texas he slid and still got hit. Brett was smart he slid when he knew it was needed but he was faster then people realize and he didn't have to slide that often.

Comparing Brett to Allen or Coffman is not viable either...two different Coaching staffs. I can tell you that DC DID instruct Brett to slide but he often ignored it because he was such a competitor. That is not the case now however they are explicitly told not to slide.

And, if this is true, this is where it crosses the line. This is the point the delusional cowboy tough bs goes a little too far.

I'm not necessarily doubting you Slow Hand; I'm just saying I'd like to hear it in the main press. However, I'm like you in that I doubt it is ever admitted to.

Our staff would never get another QB. As I said, if this is true, Allen would be wise to transfer, especially if his medical redshirt would count as a year sitting (i.e. leave now).

Absolutely which is why I would like more details/evidence. If the coaches are indeed telling them to NEVER slide under any circumstance, then I truly question their ability to coach at the FBS level.

It wouldn't as he played in a game...he would have to sit out next season as well if he transferred within FBS. Unless of course, the NCAA allowed a appeal, which is possible but unlikely.
