QB in the MWC

After the game Saturday, I began pondering. All season long we have witnessed the maturation of this team. But has there been any growth more apparent than Josh Allen? He started out as a wild gunslinger with a loose cannon arm and "iffy" decision making (i.e. the 4th at Nebraska) but has turned into a smart, calculated, and intelligent sharp shooter who now can diagnose the play before it happens and has the ability to improvise when it breaks down. There is no doubt in my mind, the University of Wyoming has the best QB in the conference and it isnt even close (he may one of the best in the country as well).

I have been wanting to talk about his topic the past few weeks but hadnt seen a ton of Rypien live for comparisons. After Saturday there is no more debate. Allen outplayed Rypien in all facets but total stats. Rypien's stat line was pretty but he couldn't make the plays to win the game. Allen did. We as fans are spoiled, this kid is going to be very special!

The crazy thing is he's not doing it with much volume. Saturday was only his second time with over 30 attempts and the first time over 250 yards.

Plus, he's added 50 rushing yards in 5 of the 8 games (and we are 5-0 in those games).

He truly is making the most of his attempts and his chances. LOVE it. He is a stud. That TD to Gentry and 2 point to Mulhardt were two of the most impressive throws I have ever seen. Even the ESPN crew on Sunday morning was commenting on how impressive he was throwing with power and accuracy across his body. The third and long to Harshman was equally impressive and just as big.

Big things in the future of this team!

The most impressive throw imo was the long one to Hollister in the first half where he put it right on the money right along the sideline. It was a bullet with touch on it if that makes any sense at all. Was just a perfect pass.

Side note. I have literally never seen Hollister drop a pass. I think he's NFL caliber.

As impressive as his catching ability, his ability to juke himself out is far superior. Seemed like every time he caught the ball he went to put on a move and damn near tripped himself! Haha. Whatever it is, its working.

People talk about Hill leaving early, but keep in mind that Allen would be eligible for the 2017 draft if he wanted to enter early, as well.

Unlikely though.....

Agreed. The throw to the back of the end zone while rolling to his right from 30 yards out, was more impressive because there might only be a half dozen qb's on earth, at any level, that can make that throw.

Still, that throw he made to Hollister shows how fast he's growing. I haven't seen him show touch like that yet this year. It shows you just how much better he's getting and how fast he's improving.

He's a stud. He takes all of the weaknesses of Wyoming's great qb's out of the bag with his physical tools. All he needs is the experience and brains that come with playing that position for an extended period of time.

Speaking of improving....

Just went through the Nebraska play-by-play....5 INTs in a 10-pass span. Just 2 since!

And one of those was a freak INT that got tipped at the line of scrimmage.

As for Nebraska, didn't Allen have to have his ankle heavily wrapped for the 4th quarter? Being a bit off kilter could easily throw someone off in that regard.

If you take the fourth quarter of Nebraska out of his line his numbers are All-American worthy.

Two of his picks this year came off of tipped balls, which really aren't on him either.

For a sophomore gunslinger, he's displayed amazing decision making to go with all the freakish athletic talent.

I hate to throw cold water on a topic that I largely agree with....Allen also had some poor passes in the Boise game. The one that comes to mind was at the end of the game to Hollister and he threw it right at his feet. It was right before our last punt i think?? He was on the run a little bit, but he was pretty clear of any DLs coming after him. So, I still think there is room for growth...he gets so hyped up and then rushes things...which is what i think happened in that play.
But...I agree with what most of you are saying. his improvement has been incredible. And that pass to Gentry in the back of the endzone...to bring us within 2...wow. Just wow...on a rope...across his body. And Gentry, going up to get it...incredible play. gives me goosebumps.

Agree completely. Allen has a lot of room to improve, but several throws a game make me go "wow!".

I could be completely wrong here, but if I remember correctly, the short throw before our last punt was tipped at the line.... Again I could be wrong I would have to watch it again but remembering live I remember it being tipped.

EDIT: Just watched that play again.... I can't tell. It looks like it left his hand ok but was wobbly when it got to Hollister. Either way it was a missed opportunity that didn't come back to haunt us.

agreed...thankfully it didn't come back to bite us. It actually set up the "safety dance" correct? such a great game. Makes me so happy. And I think Allen is the best qb in the conference. Head to head in that game, Allen out performed Rypien. Rypien has a lot of weapons, but he is pretty one dimensional. Has a great arm, but not so much better than Allen's that it trumps Allen's ability to run and lead his team. He is special...and he has just enough "gunslinger" in him to pull off some amazing plays.
