QB Aaron Young

Some may say well maybe he is realy smart....uh pretty average. Once again right off of his recruiting page:

HS GPA
June 2012 Score: 3.15
SAT Score 1600

Not quite sure why Patrick Young (Aaron's dad) would make this comment while corresponding with coach Vigen, if it's not true:

"Coach, I believe my son to be your next 3 year starter. He's tough, smart, and a great QB with a 4.0 GPA!"

Ok, now that I have dogged this young man I truly hope that he proves me wrong and has a great year. I will be the first to say that the measurables do not always tell the whole story. He seems like he has a chip on his shoulder and that may very well prove to be enough to be successful. Good Luck Arron and "Powder River Let er Buck baby"

The 4.o was his GPA out of JC........that should speak for it self.

Don't get me wrong I hope he does great...but based on every measurable out there he is less than average in terms of D1 talent. I know I know pro style Qbs don't have to run or jump....but with this young O line he will be running for his life and from the looks of his speed that will be about two steps. One of the things a QB must possess is the ability to make plays from broken sets and schemes and this kid is going to get run down like a Wounded rabbit in a pit full of vipers!
Carr can't run or jump either and he did well at Fresno.

Carr can't run?????? Really?

4.56 40 in 2012. Not blazing but better than some.

Are you guys for real?

24 hours ago, pure panic set in about our starting QB and everyone was saying how all the good juco kids were already taken and that we were screwed. We knew from the beginning we were going to have to find an under the radar kid. We found one. Now we're throwing a fit because his measurables aren't good enough? Of course they are! That's what Wyoming is all about, the ones who get overlooked! Always has been!

We want Cowboy Toughness back, and I hope we found it in Bohl AND Aaron Young, who knows if we did. I can tell you a 4.8 40 and a 27" vertical is NOT important in a QB whose function is going to be to move around a 3 foot radius until he finds an open receiver.

What are Peyton Manning's measureables?

Some of you guys on here are hilarious! Coach Bohl did not recruit Young, he was persistant in contacting Wyoming and wants to play at Wyoming in MWC! Bohl is a damn good coach and will play a huge role in improving a lot of the players. Let's don't jump to conclusions and get all negative because he hasn't recruited another John Elway. Our last coach had Brett Smith and the Cowboys did really well with that combo huh?

he's running a 4.6-4.7 40 with 117 rushing yards in 2013. So you tell me.

So you logic is...Since our last coach had a great QB in Brett Smith, and our team still sucked, we should never try and get a good QB again?

Gotcha. Bohl and staff were so impressed with Young's video "speaking volumes" that they did little follow-up on Aaron's academic background. This.....is....not....good. :tickedoff:

Guys, Young had NEGATIVE 78 yards rushing last year. He is either slow and can't scramble, or his oline sucked and he got sacked quite a bit. From the highlight tape, the line looked decent enough...

I hope he comes in and proves himself worthy, but I'm cautious about him at this point.

I though I already did....... :?

This board is funny. Coach Bohl, who has won 3 FCS titles and has a better record against BCS major conference teams than any coach we've had in the last decade, thinks Aaron Young is worthy of scholarship and to compete in his system for a starting QB job. Bt some of you think he's too slow and can't jump high enough. Cause if there is one thing I want out of my QB, it is the ability to jump high. Uh oh. Better alert Coach ASAP so he can rethink the offer!

Well it's a highlight tape...if you look at Bretts highlight tape, that is the only time the O-Line looked good.
And if he gets sacked 20 times for 4 yards a piece, and never run throughout the season (hard to believe he would never attempt at least 1 run though) he would end up with -80 yards.
It's not that hard to see why a pocket QB has negative rush yards.
Carr had 117 total rush yards on the season.
Mannion at Oregon State had -223 rush yards.
Bridgewater at Louisville only had 78 rush yards.
Cook from Michigan State ended up with 76 rush yards.

He's a POCKET PASSING QB. Not a dual threat. Meaning he is not a runner, but instead throws the ball. This is the kind of QB you usually look at for the West Coast offense. Look at Peyton Manning, Drew Brees, Tom Brady, and Aaron Rogers. Those guys are known as excellent QBs, but are not known for their running skills.

The kid has great grades, tough as nails, WANTS to be here, is familiar with the MWC teams, wants revenge against the Cal State schools here, is familiar with the West Coast offense (went 9-1 this last season in it), has the size, and doesn't cause turnovers.

I agree on all accounts! HOWEVER, have you looked at our offensive line? the poor kid is going to have to run for his life......and like I said that will be about two steps before he is run down by a fat overweight DT. :-)

FYI: Peyton Manning ended the regular season with -31 yards rushing. He's pretty effective.

Bohl/Vigen have a pretty good track record. I'm sure they'll put Aaron in a position to be successful. That includes MUCH BETTER blocking (hopefully) than we've seen recently.

By the way, I don't think Young's highlight tape is going to show him getting sacked or hurried due to line breakdowns.

Is this the best Bohl can do? I don't have a good feel about it. Only "medium" interest out of HS from Cornell (maybe he's smart) and San Jose State. Hope Bohl brings in another QB.
Well, the last SJSU JC QB turned out to be really good......but personally....that assessment by the scout I posted tweets from (scroll up) is definitely worrisome. Young sounds very Joe Southwick-ish.
We aren't really in a place to discount southwicks accomplishments being that he was a winner and took his team to bowl games....

You have obviously recruited a lot of D1 players in your life haven't you? The point of measurables is to have a screening tool that allows a coach to reduce his workload. It is an initial predictor and nothing more. We can all make cases about the "gem in the rough" however as a rule the physical tests done to measure athleticism is considered to be a universal starting point. (otherwise they wouldn't do them). It is an objective way to look at athletic capabilities. I am a firm believer in analyzing all of the information that is out there. Some players just posses that game feel and nose for the ball that can't be measured until game time. So for you to discount the information that is available on this young man and blindly put your faith in a coach who is in dire straights for a QB in naive. It is what many on here have referred to as sunshine pumping! I call it eternal optimism. Either way it is a "Feel Good" assumption. The bottom line is that on paper this kid fails the screening. If he was a good as many would like to believe he is going to be he would not be without an offer in January. Lets look at it for what it is.....he is all that is available and we need a QB so his stock rose quickly in the eyes of Coach Bohl. HE may not even be the guy come fall....don't count out Tommy who already has a relationship with all of his receivers. Just my 44 cents.

What you mentioned is why I want him to come in and prove himself. I'm going to cheer for whoever is under center next season, as I believe in fully supporting the team. I'm not unimpressed, I'm just a bit cautious. Having a guy like Smith who could make something out of nothing like he did all the time (when DC let him) has me cautious about ANYONE though.
