Pokes vs Mountain Hawks

Just got home home from watching the game here in Phoenix with a few Lehigh guys and a couple UW students down here for spring break. What a fun night!

Almost blew out my voice at the buzzer LOL
If Gilmore brings the ball down instead of Adams we lose.

There is a reason the ball was in Adams' hand at the end.

Nicely executed play. Nice to watch a team with a plan in that situation.

If Gilmore brought the ball down he would have jacked up a miss. And we would all be bitching about him and how this season sucked and we need to recruit better.
BUT! That is not the case and this team should be feeling good about themselves.
Who do we want, nd state or western Michigan?
We beat nd state last season.

You guys really hating on Gilmore right now? He had a great night! Kept us in it in the first half! Hopefully the students come and support after spring break Monday night!

Lol not really hating on him...finally we win a game when he goes off, but his track record of horrible 3s as time is winding down leads me to believe he misses the 3. But seriously he was awesome tonight.

I didn't mean to hate on him, just think he is better suited to being one of the spot up shooters in that type of action rather than the playmaker.

Obviously the Pokes probably get blown out if he doesn't go unconscious in the first half.

Should see a much better crowd next week. Hopefully Washington can play.

Just watched the recording of the game. We got so lucky. Nance was WAAAAY on court when he inbounded it to Adams

Gilmore carried the team on his shoulders tonight that's just flat out wrong. You guys seriously need to quit with your hate for the guy not sure I have ever seen so much misplaced hatred before.

I think Gilmore was being guarded and denied the inbounds pass so Nance inbounded upcourt to Adams. I thought the same thing about Nance being inbounds when he inbounded the pass, but I also thought Lehigh got away with the same thing earlier in the game, so I guess it all evened out in the end. It's about DAMN time a buzzer beater went our way for once.

he was on last night, but it's his ball hogging that drives me nuts at times, but we found a way and that's most important

I don't hate him, but he has frustrated me many times over the season. Mainly that he just stands there for 20-25 seconds and jacks up a last second 3, which has a tendancy to miss more than go through the net.

Dribbling the ball for 20 secs and jacking up a terrible shot is kind of a trademark for Wyoming guards to be honest. Jay Straight, Brandon Ewing, Donta Richardson......they all did it. Derrious is just making sure we maintain our history....

Brandon Ewing was probably the best guard we have ever had at attacking the basket.

You're right. He also jacked up terrible NBA range 3's from time to time.

Seriously just compared Gilmore to Brandon Ewing............wow.
Only player in wyo history to be all conference 4 years straight to someone who had a great night in the cbi.

1508 fans is/was truly pathetic, I understand spring break, but Laramie needs to support, I'm sure they'll be there for the Cowgirls, kinda sad if you ask me!!

I know you aren't saying that Gilmore is necessarily as good as those guys, but I fundamentally disagree with the characterization, especially in regards to Ewing. Ewing might have used a ton of possessions, but he used them far more efficiently than Gilmore (IOW, he didn't jack up terrible shots). Playing similar minutes, Ewing got the line 280 times his senior year, compared to 84 times for Derrious. He also averaged 5 assists (compared to 2.9 for Derrious, although tempo and a better offensive support cast play a role) and had a FG% of 44% (Compared 38% for Derrious). The FT line numbers are pretty revealing as they indicate that Ewing was able to collapse the defense and make plays at the rim. You see this in the 2-pt FG% comparison between the two players as well as Ewing shot 51% from 2's, whereas Gilmore shoots 38% from 2's (he is almost as good beyond the arc as he is inside at 37%).

Ewing had the ball in his hands a lot, but he simply had the ability to produce effective possessions off the bounce. That was the primary issue with this team, is that they are so limited that Derrious was forced into a playmaker role. He should have been more of an initiator and a perimeter shooter, but he was forced to generate offense off the bounce, because defenses didn't respect the other perimeter players (or the frontcourt when Washington was injured and Nance was less than 100%).
