As far as basketball goes, as has been said before, the Schroyer era decimated the fan base and drove interest in basketball to an all time low. With that being said, I'm not sure what more Shyatt can do to bring fans back other than keep winning. He's now the fastest coach in Wyoming history to 100 wins. He's never had a losing season at Wyoming despite inheriting a complete train wreck of a team from Schroyer (in which the top 2 scorers bolted). He's made the post season every single year he has coached at Wyoming, granted I realize people don't get real excited about CBI, but I also don't get excited about no name bowl games when we're a 6 or 7 win football team.
He just guided the basketball team to it's first ever MW conference tournament championship, and consequently, first NCAA auto bid, and first NCAA appearance in well over a decade. He produced a first round NBA draft pick, and the lone current senior could have a chance of being drafted as well depending on how this year goes. He has a promising crop of young players coming in as the team includes 6 sophomores and 6 freshman this year. Hard to know how this year will go, but history tells us under Shyatt that we will be competitive, play harder than the dickens, and win more games than we lose, even with having scores of young players on this team.
I truly am not sure what more Shyatt has to do to bring fans back, because it seems there must be a large contingent of fans who will only return to the AA when apparently we've won back to back to back to back conference championships and several NCAA tournament games, which is of course, wishing for the moon, although I surely hope it happens!!
Travel conditions getting to and from Laramie are always a concern and can cause low attendance in bad weather I understand, but it's been a long standing gripe of mine about how disinterested in general it seems the population of Laramie is in Wyo athletics. In my opinion, given what Shyatt has accomplished thus far, and continuing to build, we should have no problem getting 5-7 thousand just from the Laramie population and Wyo students alone. However we don't even come close, so when you're counting on filling all the seats with folks that have to drive from Cheyenne, Casper, or in my case 6 hrs away, it makes sense that we can't consistently fill up the gym even with the capacity being reduced.
Don't have any real answers I guess other than keep winning, although I feel like I'm beating the dead horse once again in saying I'm not sure what else Shyatt has to do to get people interested.
