Poke fans & travel

New to the board and I'm sure this topic has been brought up in the past, but why don't wyo fans travel to games better? I know we have a dismal football team right now, so for this I'm talking in a more "traditional sense." It seems like we ought to be able to get at least 10,000 from Laramie (including students), 5,000 both Casper and Cheyenne, and ten more from around the state?
Now football makes sense because we aren't playing at a good level, but there is a huge discrepancy in basketball. I BRIEFLY just checked the attendance numbers from basketball (avg about 4,000 non conference) and (6,000 conference) from Shyatt's 4 years here. It seems to me that those numbers don't really correlate with our success and I was wondering why this is?

Give our fans a reason to show up and they will show up.

Vegas last year - many of us didn't expect to win the tourney. But it was cold, short days, and Wyoming fan's were tired of shoveling snow. Wyoming basketball looked pretty good - but not the greatest. "Time for a trip to Vegas - lets get warm and do something with the cash we have earned. We won the tourney. We are a loud bunch.

Football wise - the days are getting shorter - the weather is still hot. There is an elk or two in site. The team is losing (or a better way to put it - hasn't won a game yet this year). Home attendance is tough - but I bet we have a good showing at Appy state (just because there are quite a few fans on the east coast that haven't been to a home game in a while).

Pokes have a big fan base. They have mostly moved out of Wyoming. I'd expect a good showing out east by fans that haven't been to a home game in a while (despite us being terrible right now)

Your estimate of 10,000 fans from Laramie seems a big overzealous. That would be 1 out of every 3 people in the town going to the game. Lots of factors to consider that make that number seem a bit high. People have to work, people that don't like UW, people that don't like sports in general, etc. Excluding students, if we could consistently pull 5,000 Laramie residents I would call that a big success.

I suspect there are a lot of fans like me. I haven't been to a football game in three years. I used to be a season ticket holder. But I refuse to go down there and waste a bunch of money watching a horrible team.

You are in a league of your own, but are most likely correct. Fans don't want to travel to see a sub par product. That doesn't mean fans don't support the Pokes. It just take a tremendous effort for most. And, if they are traveling up to 6 or 7 hours, they want to see a team that can win. So far this season....not so good.

Overall, Wyoming fans travel well. Especially when the team is playing away. Many Wyoming fans don't live in Wyoming.

As far as basketball goes, as has been said before, the Schroyer era decimated the fan base and drove interest in basketball to an all time low. With that being said, I'm not sure what more Shyatt can do to bring fans back other than keep winning. He's now the fastest coach in Wyoming history to 100 wins. He's never had a losing season at Wyoming despite inheriting a complete train wreck of a team from Schroyer (in which the top 2 scorers bolted). He's made the post season every single year he has coached at Wyoming, granted I realize people don't get real excited about CBI, but I also don't get excited about no name bowl games when we're a 6 or 7 win football team.

He just guided the basketball team to it's first ever MW conference tournament championship, and consequently, first NCAA auto bid, and first NCAA appearance in well over a decade. He produced a first round NBA draft pick, and the lone current senior could have a chance of being drafted as well depending on how this year goes. He has a promising crop of young players coming in as the team includes 6 sophomores and 6 freshman this year. Hard to know how this year will go, but history tells us under Shyatt that we will be competitive, play harder than the dickens, and win more games than we lose, even with having scores of young players on this team.

I truly am not sure what more Shyatt has to do to bring fans back, because it seems there must be a large contingent of fans who will only return to the AA when apparently we've won back to back to back to back conference championships and several NCAA tournament games, which is of course, wishing for the moon, although I surely hope it happens!!

Travel conditions getting to and from Laramie are always a concern and can cause low attendance in bad weather I understand, but it's been a long standing gripe of mine about how disinterested in general it seems the population of Laramie is in Wyo athletics. In my opinion, given what Shyatt has accomplished thus far, and continuing to build, we should have no problem getting 5-7 thousand just from the Laramie population and Wyo students alone. However we don't even come close, so when you're counting on filling all the seats with folks that have to drive from Cheyenne, Casper, or in my case 6 hrs away, it makes sense that we can't consistently fill up the gym even with the capacity being reduced.

Don't have any real answers I guess other than keep winning, although I feel like I'm beating the dead horse once again in saying I'm not sure what else Shyatt has to do to get people interested.

I know that I make the trek to Laramie twice per year.. But now that I've moved closer to Laramie I am mortified by the lack of pride in UW. The lack of interest in sports in general.... Maybe look into promotional packages/tickets etc. It looks horrible at the AA when you have a huge section of "Cowboy Joe" seats wide open. The marketing department needs to do a little more to entice fans into attending. :twocents: Go Pokes

100% agreed

3 games in Sept is quite a step up, as we all know Oct is hunting season here in Wyo, and most crowds then are down, kinda glad we only got 1 game in Oct, but 2 in Nov, hmmmm....always liked the CSU game around Halloween Nov 7 isn't too bad but those games around Nov 28 like against UNLV is always questionable in Laramie.

I go when I can get there and just wish the U would cater to fans/familes a bit more, but it's Wyo, say no more

This. If we ever truly compete for conference championships in football and regular season conf championships in basketball We can expect to see near sell outs. Wyomingites have great pride and would love nothing more than to support a winning program, but the teams have got to show it first because of the travel issues.

As great as Shyatt has been most of those wins have been cupcakes. His conf record is mediocre and in all honesty we haven't even sniffed a regular season crown yet. We've been out of contention in conf play by half-way through every one of his years. When the AA was rocking throughout Wyo bball history we've been regular season champions. As soon as we are top two in conf with three weeks left in the season that's when you'll see the AA truly rocking again.
