Penalty questions for those watching TX game on TV

In the stadium, they didn't show replays very often. Even if they did, I'm sure they wouldn't highlight any of the following, so I have questions about each:

1. On the long TX run from deep in their territory, it looked like the WR held the ever-living hell out of our DB trying to make a play on their RB. It was a big play the flipped momentum at the time...which was a recurring theme. Did anyone else see it to know one way or the other?
2. On the TX punt return in the second half, it looked like the returner was sprung by a pretty obvious block in the back. Did I see that correctly? Another play that resulted in a score that would have been much different had a call been made.
3. Was the TX pass interference call correct in the second half? The TX fans around us were whining about Big XII refs having the fix in for them...I didn't see it. It looked overthrown and uncatchable, but I didn't see it clearly along the sideline.

Generally it was a clean game, but I thought those were some pretty big whiffs that resulted in 14 of TX's points.

1. I did not see any replay on TV that highlighted a hold, although it is quite possible.

2. I do believe I remember that play and thought it was a block in the back in real-time; however, the replay looked more ambiguous - he pulled his hands back and the defender looked to just fall forwarded at the same time as the guy he was about to block in the back. It could easily have been called but I thought it was also a good no-call.

3. It looked to me like an un-catchable ball, but it wasn't so far out of the area as to be a 'gimmie' call for the ref, especially in real time while watching the players. The defender was interfering with the receiver and the receiver was the target (it wasn't a throw away), so it is fair game imho.

Again, disclaimer, I am a Longhorn, but I try to be pretty pragmatic. Holds are so subjective and/or inconsistent that I long ago stopped worrying about them or I would be mad at the refs all the time.

Not the right thread maybe, but my take from the game:
- Wyo had very good line play, offensive and defensive. They really held their own. At the end of the game, though, UT often has a fresher D-line (and LBs) than their opponent due to playing 2-deep the whole game. Very few schools can do that and have to rely on their starters much more. I did not track the Wyo D-line players, but I would suspect that the starters had more snaps than any of the equivalent UT line players. Many years UT manages to pull away in the 4th quarter in their early season games due to depth more than quality of starter play. Wyo helped off-set the disadvantage in defensive depth by dominating TOP and running about 15 more plays than UT.

- Y'alls' QB looked pretty solid. Made some accurate throws early (Ewers looked bad to start) and looked poised. I understand that he is the backup, but his play looked high-quality. His pick 6 was a back-breaker but he was in the 'we have to do SOMETHING' period of the game and the UT corners are very, very good. He did a good job of reading the D and making good throws up until that point and while he made that look 'easy', it really isn't that easy and I give him credit.

EDIT: at the end of the day, Wyoming really did look better than 'Bama. And after watching 'Bama this weekend, maybe you will match up in a bowl game - if Bama does good enough :D.

Oh, and I was traveling from El Paso to Austin on Friday and traded a quick hello with a Wyoming fan that looked big enough to play on a college football line.

1. There was 100% a hold on that one. They got away with it. Announcers thought the same (and they were HUGE homers)
2. Didn't notice that one.
3. It was correct. It was only uncatchable because the DB was holding the receiver so much.

If it was holding, that would have been independent of catchable or not, and he really didn't seem to hold him at all - which is why he probably ended up thinking he needed to interfere to prevent a catch. The ball sailed pretty high, though, so I think that was the question - could he have caught it if he was not interfered with - was iffy. I think a call either way would have been 'right'.

Thanks for the replies, gents. I don't think any of the calls changed the game. I was just curious. Appreciate the help.

The dumbest call was the last offensive PI that took away Svboda’s 1st career passing TD.
