Penalty Quest

I had a couple of questions about penalties that I didnt see answers to. And they both revolve around the play where SDSU's O-lineman was ejected. That play started with a false-start, then the extra curricular activities resulted after that. The official in his ruling said the false-start was declined and the personal fouls offset. First, why was the false start declined? That made no sense, did we really decline it, or was that just the official's ruling? Second, DC was really giving the officals hell about something , but I never heard what? Any ideas?

their were offsetting penalties a Wyo player was given a personnel foul... I think and i believe thats why DC was upset

I couldn't see what happened at the game. Too many guys standing around the action. My understanding was, you can't ever get penalized twice on the same play. If one team ever gets 2 penalty's called on them, you always have to pick which one you accept and decline the other.

The O-lineman for SDSU would have been ejected either way. When there are penalties on both sides of the ball, the play is negated and replayed, even if there are 2 penalties on one side and only one on the other. I would have liked to have known what DC was giving them hell about too.

So if its a false start on the offense, isn 't it a dead ball and play is stopped. In that case, wouldn't the personal fouls be dead ball fouls after the play. The 5 yards should have been walked off imo.

That's exactly what I was thinking should happen. I was confused by the way the ref explained it all...

I don't have the game recorded, but I don't think the penalty was a false start. It was illegal formation or illegal motion or something like that so the play wasn't whistled dead. However, since the personal fouls occured AFTER the play during a dead ball, I would think the penalty would still be able to be inforced. My guess would be that DC declined the penalty thinking that he was going to accept the personal foul penalty, but then found out we got one called on us as well. That or he was arguing that we should get to accept the first penalty. What a mess.
