Pac MW settlement

Oregon State and it's dumbassed ego and the PAC-XX commish wanting to keep her job at any cost are the only reasons the merger never happened. I honestly believe Wazzu woulda been o.k. with a merger.

I guess I feel like Gloria Nevarez, who got her contract extended for another 4 years during this mess, is equally to blame. Maybe it's my own perception, but I recall hearing "my experience as a lawyer" way too many times during this shitshow. She was a summer associate for a hand full of months before moving into college athletics. That does not present a whole lot of litigation experience or real-world legal know-how outside the ivory towers. And sorry, she's had more jobs than most credible people I know...like 9. Some with very short tenures.

She got totally worked by Theresa Gould and 2 weak PAC schools. Cutting through it all, we have a weaker make-no-sense conference and everyone outside of MWC knows it. At this point, I wish the MWC could use some of the cash to help Montana and Montana State to make the jump. Maybe in time that would be a cool "make-sense" conference. Not a big fan of bringing on board a bunch of FCS schools, but having flagship schools from Montana, Wyoming, North Dakota in a conference at least makes some regional sense (forget about time zone revenue). Hawaii, UTEP and NIU is just silly and I'd be laughing if I were a PAC fan.

And for everyone blaming the lawyers and calling them profiteers, I totally get it. The only thing worse than lawyers are their uninformed clients with unreasonable expectations.

I love Wyoming sports and I will support the Pokes. But a merger should have happened. Gloria and MWC failed.

I tend to agree with this.

In my opinion, the PAC had the upper hand the entire time, and the MWC failed to recognize that. The MWC's BATNA (best alternative to a negotiated agreement) was to backfill the conference with low level FBS and FCS programs and to get a moderate cash infusion after a protracted legal battle. Taking a long-term view, that isn't a very strong BATNA.

I wish the MWC would have been willing to yield a little up front in order to make a merger happen. Long-term, it was the best outcome for the conference, but that probably would have been framed as a "loss" for the MWC in the media. Egos get in the way and this is what you end up with.

In hindsight, you are right. I never would have imagined that the PAC had the upper hand...but they must have. They were out of money, the flagship programs gone, bad schedules, media deals, etc. But what they had were fans and a conference that cared more about the PAC than we thought. And the MWC was filled with programs that loathed the MWC (so did the fans) and wanted it to explode. Boise State, SDSU, Fresno State...they hated being in the MWC. Probably Utah State, too. It has been on shaky grounds probably since the schools left the WAC. Not sure we are free of that cancerous attitude with UNLV on board. But you are right and I certainly failed to see it. The passion was on the side of the PAC. And the MWC leaders talked big and failed in every way imaginable.
 
All more the reason why we need to go 3-0 against them head to head this season.

The real problem, at least in my opinion, is which programs the PAC had convinced to jump ship from the MWC. They took the best football program and the best basketball program. The MWC was never going to be able to replace those two programs.

The MWC was left with UNLV and Air Force as their "flagship" programs. That is a big step down. Losing Boise State and SDSU, as much as MWC fans hated them, may just be the death knell for the MWC. The MWC has been able to backfill with good programs in the past, but those days look over. Reality for the MWC does not look good.

MIDWEST--100% agree with you. She was totally conflicted with her cushy job position. You would think the MWC Presidents would have called her out on that and brought in a 3rd party to lead the MWC during the merger discussions . I always believed that GN and Gould had huge conflicts of interest and we now have what we have as a MWC. Shame!l

We lost! the MWC lost!

I was cruising various sites following the settlement. The overwhelming sentiment by San Diego State fans was that they were "...so glad we don't have to travel to Casper anymore." Not Cheyenne...Casper. So many douches in that conference. CSU will fit right in.

They didn't want a merger. They got what they wanted, minus UNLV, who they tried to lowball. There's no reality where Wyoming was part of what happened. We're specifically why a merger didn't happen.
 
The mistake was coming to the rescue of the remaining PAC teams when they were left out of the Big 10, ACC, Big 12 exodus. It gave them a lifeline which they repaid by sinking the MWC.
