Our Offense Sucks

Herndon is not aggressive at all. He should be pulling 8 boards a game easily but he stands and watches. Doesn't anticipate the rebound at all. Outside shooting is horrendous so far. I don't see the improvement in Gorski that we have been told. Dalton doesn't shoot well that I have seen. And I agree on Marshall, get him the rotation and open up the offense. It could be a long season.
Out of curiosity would you call anyone on our team an above average shooter?
I am not sure we have anyone that I would consider an above average shooter at this point. I would be excited to call someone an average shooter at this point. It was ugly last night. However, I think we will see marked improvement over the next couple of weeks.

I'd say lets also wait to see how we shoot in the friendly confines of the DOME OF DOOM. You always shoot better on your home court. It's just the magic feel of putting up a million shots in the gym you love and know. I'd say no one looked above average last night but we might have streak shooters or just great pure shooters that had an off night. Lets not forget that was our first REAL game of the season and it was on the road.

i thought it was just me, but yes i've never been a fan of this slow style offense, at 7220 you should run them outta the gym and score in the high 80's to low 90's every game, but i think it'll be what it'll be, with the big body that Jonathan Barnes is we should use him more down low, right now he looks soft to me and doesn't like alot of contact, we'll see how it goes from here on

Ive been saying this for years! Run the damn wheels of people. You play 20 minutes of balls to the wall run and gun and teams like San Jose State won't want to come out for the second half! AND we finally have the personnel for it. This team can run all day. Lets do it Larry!

it'd sure make for more exciting games for sure, i think, and after that football season it's time for some EXCITEMENT

I see the same problem with Herdon this year as last year. He is too timid, He went up for a dunk last night with two hands and did some sort of soft layup and missed it completely. If that was Cooke he would have slammed it down with authority and that is what Herdon has to start doing.

Even Jonathan Barnes has more power to his dunk than Herdon does.

Barnes is about 3 times Herndon size, I'd hope he could dunk it with more authority. Based on how Herndon looks, I'm surprised he can lift a basketball.

JB actually has a nice touch on the ball. He can shoot FTs, too. I think he should get two or three post ups a game.

It's not about his size it's about how timid he is when he approaches the Basket. He has plenty height he just doesn't put any effort into and we saw it last year with weak passes getting picked off and that same issue is still going on and IMO as long as it's happening he will never be an inside threat. Just let him sit outside and shoot he has a nice three ball.

Here's where we'll see if Shyatt is a great coach or merely a good one. No dominant big man on this year's team so we'll get to see if Shyatt can adjust. Leonard Washington and Larry Nance aren't walking through the door.
You need to give him more than two games. This is a young team...similar to football. It is going to take time for the team to get comfortable with each other, etc.

Give them a few more games.

I'm afraid it going to be similar to football. Can't put a price on experience, I guess.

It almost seems to me that "seniority" is very important to Shyatt. He will start and give minutes to those who have been in the program the longest. But if he sees someone not having a good game, he needs to pull them right away. Let them sit and thing about it. Maybe have variable starting lineups in the non-conference season.

I thought it was just the football board....but seeing now that some on here are just never happy. We just came off a MWC Tourney run and the big tourney for the first time in over a f@#$%@#$ decade and we have people complaining about Shyatt.

Wow.

No one's complaining about Shyatt. Stop putting words in people's mouths. I and a couple others are not fans of the offense and would like Shyatt to adjust and possibly go more uptempo to better suit our personnel.

Shyatt has already said they are going to play at a faster pace this year and that his ideal is that we'll have games in the 70s and 80s. He's said that style suits our personnel better. We attempted 55 FG in the ISU game, which is nearly 9 more than our average FGA last year. HE'S DOING WHAT YOU WANT. You and others are losing their minds over one game on the road with one of the youngest teams in the country when shots weren't falling. Settle down. Seriously.

Theres things at play here that aren't necessarily directly tied to playing up tempo. 9 more shots a game could be a result of the 30 second shot clock. I can't speak for anyone else on this board but when I say would like to see up tempo is for this team to get up and down in transition and run! Quit slowing it down all the time and looking for half court sets. I would like to see more full court pressure too. Use our elevation to our advantage.

The actual offense doesn't bother me and the pace of play doesn't bother me at all and never has. I actually like the motion but my problem is jacking up so many 3's instead of using the multiple guys we have that can take the ball to the basket to do just that, instead of just jacking shots up from deep. When you have no low post threat but you have multiple guys capable of creating shots and getting to the basket then that is what you need to do.

I'm not bitching about Shyatt at all though. He knows more about his team than any of us. I just would like to see more dribble drive myself but that is my personal preference so it isn't like it matters

This. A 3 now and then is fine, especially when there's a hot streak going. But just lobbing them up over and over with nothing going in, it may be time to try something else.

That and us playing catch up most of the game. It looked like the exact same, tired, old offense.
