Our D line

Can anyone who was at the game explain why SUU ran all over us?

Was the switch from 3-4 to 4-3 good? Is our D hurting that bad after losing a couple of guys last year?

I'm glad we got the W, but this game made me very nervous for next week...and the rest of the season.

That makes me nervous, and it also makes me nervous that we only had like 37 yards rushing, and gave up several sacks. Hopefully they'll get these things fixed up a bit, or could be a problem.

Missed tackles, shedding tackles, and rarely blitzed, even when it was obvious they were going to run. Also, very little pressure on SUU's backfield, so I doubt 3-4 would have helped much in the grand scheme.

It didn't sound like ACS scrambled and ran nearly as much as last year? I guess when you're throwing >80% you aren't worried about scrambling for yards.

Oh, he tried at times, but there were times when he didn't have a chance and the blitz went straight through some good sized gaps. But when the O-line held, he did really well. I don't think he overthrew once, and there were some pretty big throws.

But the main concern is the O-line on offense. If the RBs are given enough time and space, they can do well. Same goes for passing. But it was the inconsistency of the O line that is worrisome.

Brutal play by both the O-line and D-line. I never saw this coming. A bowl game will be tough to come by. Not good.

Our O line didnt even look half the size of the SUU guys and half the time just got thrown right out of the way :tickedoff:

Just BS'n a buddy here this morning (we both were @ the game last night). We both think the o-line was spread out with bigger gaps in between. Can anyone confirm this? We agree on defensively is neither of us are getting paid the big bucks to be tasked with fixing it....

I'm pretty sure that wide offensive line splits/gaps are a staple of the spread offense that Christiansen runs. I think I remember hearing something about that while watching a Missouri game a couple of years ago when he was the OC. Not sure what the reasoning is behind it though.

Holes for the QB to run through if there are no open targets.

I don't like the defensive play calling. I didn't like it last year. Coach English hardly ever blitzes, it seems like this year he is allowing our corners to play on an island but he is not allowing our linebackers to blitz.

That'd be weird if English didn't ever blitz.. considering Breske taught him defense.. and Breske LOVES to blitz.

I think he blitzed twice the entire game. Even when it was obvious they were going right up the middle, he didn't blitz. :tickedoff:

It's not like Alexander had much time last night to get in a groove, but he needs to hit the holes harder. Way too much time waiting for a play to never develop - gotta pound it! SUU's rb's were very small but very fearless and had at least 5 yards before first contact it seemed. Maybe this is why Kango was put in front of AA on the depth chart - tough task with his first game ever against TX.

Both lines were FRIGHTENING in my opinion!

Can we have Marty English spend some time with TCU's D? I think English had the LBs and secondary in Zone for most of the game, rather than man to man, and blitzing only a handful of times.

Or just hire Joe Glenn as the D Cord?
He was 3-4, not 4-3 though.

Yeah...but if he could recruit the guys on D, and push that 3-4 to where it was a few years ago. Weren't we one of the top Ds in the country (albeit with one of the worst Os)???
