Offseason......

I think this offseason is going to be very bad. Burman tried to avoid this last year by making a quick hire, but it is going to backfire because
he probably made the wrong hire. I think we are going to see a very bad offseason with a lot of transfers....

…and an influx of transfers even NMSU and UTEP would pass on. This staff may have to offer high school players with D2 or NAIA offers if any.

Maybe Sawvel will get an opportunity to be a defensive coordinator again in a conference that pays their coordinators the same money as we do a head coach. Then he can walk away and do what he does best, defense. Then, maybe we’ll actually open up the position and actually conduct a search! If Burman learns anything from this process it’s got to be that you don’t make your money making program hire a quick one. I’m sure that Sawvel is well liked by his players and was really happy as a coordinator. But he seems so uncomfortable in a head position I almost feel bad for the guy.

First, there is the assumption that Burman CAN learn. Over his tenure, he has shown to make the same mistakes over and over again. Heath Shroyer, Alan Edwards...Dave Christensen, Joe Glenn (hell of a hype man...not so much a coach...) He did get Craig Bohl that promised championships, but only got close 1 year out of 10 with no conference titles. This latest move by Burman in hiring Sawvel was lazy, playing scared, and having NO vision for the future of Wyoming Athletics. Has he put Wyoming in a position for success with the bread winners in athletics?? Not that I can see.

So....before all the apologist come to his defense, I would like to know how much more qualified he is to make decisions about head coaching positions than a search firm, or for that matter, long time fans of CFB, NCABB (men and women) that have been vested in the University's athletic success for longer than he has held the position. Seriously, we all saw the writing on the walls with Shroyer and Edwards and now Sawvel before a single game was played (forgot about small angry man Linder). I pray that Sunny can bring some semblance of competitiveness to the BB team, but at this point, I have ZERO expectations.

I would really like to step back from this cliff, but damn...not seeing any light at the end of this Burman tunnel....

Waylee one of the first to enter…….

It’s going to be bad offseason and probably a much worse season next year if that’s even possible. We are actually graduating a big class of starters. We are one of the most senior laden depth charts in the country. But I don’t think we have a ton of transfers just based on the fact that not many of our players with eligibility remaining would have FBS landing spots (outside of Waylee, Gyllenborg, Siders and Harsh).

Women’s soccer just beat a ranked team. Volleyball has an exciting roster. Wrestling brought in some good looking transfers. Basketball will at least have a coach worth rooting for but unlikely to be competitive in the MWC this year.

Football…we are in the midst of Koenning 2.0. It will get worse.

I'm afraid it'll get a lot worse.

Burman needs reassigned Monday.
PBJ needs canned Tuesday and appoint whoever you want as interim for both positions. New AD by Nov and new HC by Dec.

If this doesn't happen it'll be a shitshow for many years.

If history repeats itself, we are in for some truly awful football for at least 3 years. By then, the program will need a miracle type rebuild just to make us competitive in 2029. Thanks Tom!

Honestly, if the university doesn't care, why should fans?

Moving Burman out and firing PBJ may not fix things (no need for an essay 307) but at least it signals try and effort. It at least signals this type of production is not acceptable. Doing both now prepares for the rebuild and gets ahead in the coaching search.

You are right .. no need for an essay. It's not complicated. Burman hires bad coaches.

His picker is broken. Whatever "process" Burman uses to replace Jay will likely result in another bad coach except that, as others have pointed out, they won't even have the experience and talent left over from a stable regime. It will be ground floor rebuild with a bad coach.... Very ugly

He does "okay" when he goes outside of the UW connections and just follows what the service or guy with the most success at the Big Sky school is. It's when it gets involved with the coach having a previous connection or existing connection with UW that is a disaster. Bohl, Shyatt, Linder, CHristensen being "okay". When these guys are already assistants or previous assistants at UW it's been a disaster --- Edwards, Schroyer, Sawvel. He seems to be to easily swayed by the prior coaches recomendation, which is inherently biased. You would think he would have a better idea of these former assistants given that they are in the same facilities that he is. For example when Dabo Swinney was hired at Clemson, the then AD a guy by the name of Phillips said he used to walk by the offices of the assistant coaches or go into the offices and he could see how the players just radiated toward Swinney, they were all in his office and he knew Swinney could connect with the kids better than anybody else. Burman has not shown to have been able to provide that sort of incite or sense of how players are reacting to assistant coaches and how these guys would do as head coaches.

I suppose "okay" in terms of what success has meant at UW...Like I see that Glenn and DC are better than Koenning but that level of coach waking in the door today probably doesn't move the needle.

In terms of observing players affinity with assistant or position coaches...isn't Sawvell supposed well-liked by the players? I seem to remember that being a thing...maybe I'm thinking of somebody else.

In any case, Burman being allowed to preside over any more HC search/decisions should be a non-starter. It's the one decision he has to make wherein the consequences of success or failure will bleed to everything else the department does. For instance, If Wyoming has a consistent top-25 bball team nobody is grousing about the reseating debacle.

He has to get the coaching hires right...and he doesn't. If the focus in media and conversation can be kept there, it may be possible to highlight the malaise in the athletic department such that his seat will finally get warm. In a weird way, the facilities and conversations around reseating, media strategies, and conference realignment have sort of diluted his central failing.

Not being snotty or condescending here, but who really cares if the players on this particular UW team transfer? We will likely end up with either 1 or 2 wins total. Transfer away I say, we need a total refresh!

Many of these players were part of a 9 win team last year. With even semi competent play at QB, we would be 3-3. I would hope that the horrible teams that Bohl put on the field his first 2 years are not part of our future. I guess it's a mute point because Sawvel will be here at least through next year. So we might get a total refresh next year (player wise) and probably another 1 or 2 win season.

That is the real question. What happened to the returning players from that 9 win season?

A couple transferred (Gavin Meyer, Kolbey Taylor), a few are injured (Gyllenborg, Waylee, White, Ekeler, King, Walsh), a few quit (Boddie, and ?), and the rest - I question - should be in the 2 deep (Brown, Svoboda, and ?).

And I guess...a coaching change probably didn't help either. Our OC sucks, our DC sucks, our moral is shit - and we have no emotion when playing the game. But hey, we are all friends and love eachother.
