He could resign and refuse any additional compensation. He could also negotiate a resignation.

I speculate he is determined to succeed and planning to return in 2026. As hard as these past 2 years have been, if he makes big changes to the coaches/players and puts an exciting offense on the field winning 6+ games it could change everything. Odds are unlikely it will happen.

Who knows - maybe an individual with deep pockets who might have been in attendance at the game got really disappointed and has offered to Burman the funds to terminate him leaving resources to make a new hire immediately.

With Burman in charge all bets are off.

In all seriousness, I just don’t think Sawful is the one who can lead this. I really question his ability to recognize talent and skills. We saw it last year with Svaboda and this year with Anderson. It wasn’t like offensive production was bad a game or two. It was all year first game to Saturday. I really just don’t see that he has the ability to recognize the qualities to name an effective starter…….

Overall, the hire itself was the lazy way out in my opinion. Had Burman just opened it, done a search, and actually had interviews, there probably wouldn’t be as much animosity towards Sawvel. A transparent process was all that was missing. If he would have been the hands down guy picked by a hiring committee with players on it, I don’t think it would be where we are now. In fact, Burman had better be hoping to high heaven that Sunny works out, because he did the same thing there. I never want to see any coach fail at UW, but I believe that the AD is responsible for setting them up for success, not hoping against failure. He put a lot of pressure on a guy with no head coaching experience in the one sport that captures all fan attention. I’m sure if we could all ask Jay if he likes the position he’s in he’d say he’s not comfortable. But he’d be a fool to step down, or agree to an amendment on his contract. That’s money he’s due. It’s not his fault Burman signed him to a 5 year deal. For all of the public criticism and terrible things people say about him as a coach, he deserves every dime. While the team hasn’t performed up to our standards as fans, he also is not satisfied and has said as much.

An open and transparent process would have yielded a different coach. No way was he the best option but a different coach wouldn't have hired an inexperienced Junior as dc.

If I was going to defend Sawvel, I would point out that Anderson is equally as terrible as Svoboda and brings less as a runner than Svoboda does. When Anderson had a few good games last year it made it look like we had a legitimate QB sitting the bench for way too long, and it made Sawvel look terrible. But in reality, they are both just terrible options.

When Anderson had a few good games last year it made it look like we had a legitimate QB sitting the bench for way too long, and it made Sawvel look terrible. But in reality, they are both just terrible options.

We won't know until he plays more than a handful of plays. From what we have seen there is reason to doubt. He was a stud in high school but it was Wyoming high school football. I remember the Bartletts and even Steve Cockerham as being decent QBs from Wyoming HS so it is not impossible.
