I think I read between the lines of your comment that you agree that the effect exists...I'm not making much claim about what it takes to defeat it....just that it has to be factored in. If a candidate that UW targets takes a position with a Florida or Texas G6 school that has a similar rep as Wyoming at the same compensation that we had offered..is it crazy to think that if we had upped the money they would come here? What if we were able to really up the money? I would love to be the top dog in coaching/admin pay in athletics in the conference...unfortunately, I think we are stuck with comparing ourselves with what everybody else does.
Here's my take in the G6 only (we'll always or mostly lose to the P4 regardless of G6 team): Yes there will be preferences but it will be candidate specific. An up and coming HC from fcs in the deep south with strong Florida ties is less likely to choose WYO than a Southern School with all things relatively equal. That doesn't mean WYO is disadvantaged. It means for that candidate, WYO is disadvantaged. If the candidate is west of the Mississippi, then maybe we have an advantage. If the Southern candidate is looking and only WYO, nmsu, and directional MI are looking, we have a pretty good advantage.
All I'm saying is that the headwinds within G6 only are no excuse for failure. We pay enough, we are a good enough location, we have good enough facilities, etc. to succeed. Caveat: I don't know our nil relative to G6 peers.
