New MWC/Wyo Fan Here

Hey folks,

I'm a student at The Ohio State University (originally from New York) and I am excited for the upcoming football season! There's been some frantic conference realignment over the summer and among the greatest intrigue to me is the movement of teams between the WAC, MWC, and PAC-10. I have always liked the MWC for its unique home-grown atmosphere and fan support surrounding the games. With the departure of Utah and BYU, and the addition of a few WAC teams, I feel like the MWC is going to become very competitive and interesting in the coming years. I have a sister out at the University of Colorado at Boulder, and so I have eaten up all of the CSU Rams hatred and I was lucky enough to attend the Rocky Mountain Showdown last year. As I have decided to follow the MWC more closely this year, I decided that I would follow the Wyoming Cowboys for their interesting history as a program - and state - and for their contentious rivalry with CSU. This looks like a quality forum to be a part of.

Respect,
BuckeyesNYC

P.S., What in the world is this? :orly:

Welcome aboard! Willie, who roams this board from time to time, is a HUGE Ohio State fan.

Definitely make it to Laramie for a game if you can.. some top quality games coming our way in the near future.

Yeah, welcome aboard! Yes, we hate CSU! Anyone who shares that is a cool cat in my eyes. It's nice to know that the MWC is interesting to a guy that goes to OSU. One thing though, drop "THE" to Ohio State. Either that or you have to start calling yourself TOSU, which sounds like bad tofu.

With a lisp.

"The Ohio Thate Univerthity"

sorry, couldn't help it

I doubt most Ohio State fans know about us as much as you do.. So pass it on! Glad to have you here. Wyoming fans are a special group.

Just as a clarification... not the kind of "special" that ride the short bus like the sheep fans. :)

I didn't use the NFL-alum obnoxious "THE", I used "The", because the name of my university is The Ohio State University, which stems from a bitter historical in-state political/educational battle between Ohio University and Ohio State. That is the official name of the institution.

A lot of people online use tOSU, but I don't understand the lower-case "t". I always just use OSU, because it is more common and acceptable (as in, we don't say TUSA, the "The" is implied). Similarly, you wouldn't say I'm from "United States", you would say "The United States". OSU works the same way. Most universities don't.

And then in my sarcastic way I would say :orly: . The United States of what? Mexico?
Because Mexico is Estados Unidos Mexicanos (United Mexican States) or like the United States of Mexico as some who know would say.
BTW, they've been playin' fb in Mexico for years. A year or two ago a Mexican high school program came to the Dallas area to play one of the local high schools here.

Totally not the point I was making. Either designation of the colloquial "United States" must be applied with "The" to be properly identified.

Right

Oklahoma state is just called "Oklahoma State University" and csu is just called *gagag*** "colorado state university" *mega gag* because they don't officially have the word "the" in their names

Well, yes. Same with Michigan State University.

Isn't Penn St officially called "The Pennsylvania State University" or something.

Officially, no, but they sometimes utilize that title in more proper settings. It says "The" on the seal. I could be wrong though. If it is, the school has already branded itself as "Penn State" and nobody really even says Pennsylvania State University, which is - from what I can see from searching the web - the official name. In Ohio, there was a struggle for identity and purpose among the educational institutions, and long ago, as to solidify its position as the state's flagship institution, Ohio State aggressively branded itself as "The Ohio State University" after adopting the title, and the alumni in the NFL really took off with it.

I didn't mean to start this debate on OSU's name, but I am obliged to defend it.

Just so you know, we will talk about any and everything on this board.. and we'll turn the most trivial stuff into a debate.. so this is about right on par. :) :thumb:

I've noticed when pro football players or other alum divulge where they went to school, they always say "theee, Ohio State University". A lot of emphasis on The. I always thought it sounded arrogant. At least I know the story about it now.

I like how they use the word THE before OSU. Yes it is annoying to people outside of Columbus, but it shows pride anyway. Not much bad you can say about the program or Coach Tressel.
