Let's compare apples to apples here. The Sugar Bowl isn't even comparable to Independence Bowl. Would people rather travel to Laramie to watch Texas play or Nex Mexico? Was the University begging people to attend the Texas or Nebraska game? No, they weren't. Teams, locations, dates, DO matter. These smaller bowls, in the big picture, do not matter. Therefore, if a bowl game is closer to the fanbase, that is what it is about. We may be able to do a recruiting trip in TX/LA is we go there, but why do they play the game? It is for the University which is the fanbase shelling out money to watch them. New Mex this year would turn into a home game for UW.
So would I be willing to shell out $500 to fly to Dallas then DRIVE 2+ hours to Shreveport? Yes, for a BCS game. Most people would. However, for a bowl game the day after Christmas where we would maybe get 1000 fans, not happening for most people.
A Saturday noon NM Bowl would draw easy 5k+ fans. I went two years ago and the NM football fans had something to cheer about as well. We had a lot of support and this year it would even be more.
As for saying "well Shreveport has an airport bigger than Laramie's".... well, there is a reason people fly into Denver and drive up. My hometown in Wyo has an airport too. Doesn't mean it is accessible worth a shi. I've already looked at airfare into Shreveport. I couldn't find any major airline that could get me there. Everything directd me to Dallas and had me drive. The cost of ONE WAY ticket to LA is more than roundtrip, hotel, food and game ticket to NM. For fans, it is not even debatable. NM = more fan support.
