New Mexico Visits Laramie

There is a decent sized Air Force base in Shreveport...a lot of military folks would go just to cheer on the cadets, even if they aren't AFA fans.

If this is the case, then I could really see AF (if they win out) getting to the Independence Bowl, and New Mexico deciding on taking SDSU or Wyoming. Wyoming would probably travel better, but SDSU would probably bring more TV sets, so this one is a toss-up. Hopefully, this whole scenario doesn't involve the Pokes sitting at home with an 8-4 record, while 7-5 Air Force (with a losing conference record) gets to play in a Bowl Game in Louisiana.

Stop with the talk of Wyoming not going to a bowl game if eligible. We're going if we get 7 wins. There's too many bowl games nowadays. If not a MWC Bowl we'd fill in somewhere else, but IMO it will be a MWC Bowl.

And please no Independence Bowl. How do you even get to Shreveport? Fly to New Orleans and drive? Count me and about 12K other Wyoming fans out.

I'm hoping and praying we get the independence bowl. It's a later date bowl game with more exposure than the lowly New Mexico bowl that is played in the afternoon and overlaps with whatever Bowl is also played that evening as well. To put it simply, if we play in the New Mexico bowl no one will even know we are in a bowl. So what's the point?

Let's shoot for something bigger that will get more nationwide attention by playing an ACC team and hopefully winning. That will get more people talking.

Uh...dude...there is a airport in Shreveport (bigger than Laramie's). But most folks fly to Dallas and then drive the 2.5-3 hrs to Shreveport. I was actually stationed there at Barksdale right after graduating from UW.

What good is national exposure playing 6-6 North Carolina in front of one thousand people? Last I checked people talked a lot about the New Mexico Bowl 2 years ago. It was featured on many of the top 10 bowl countdowns and highlight shows. I don't see a lot of people scanning the preview shows saying, "Ah shucks Wyoming's in the New Mexico Bowl but if they were in the Independence Bowl I'd watch it." What people will ever know Wyoming is in a bowl game besides Wyoming fans and the fans of the team Wyoming is playing?

IMO there's three tiers of bowls, the BCS, the second tier like the Holiday, Cotton, Gator, Alamo, maybe a couple others, and then the rest. Who cares about the difference.

I'd personally rather have a bowl game our fans have a chance at enjoying in person.

My comment was more sarcasm than me actually believing theres no airport in Shreveport. I'm aware that Shreveport has an airport. But my point stands, how accessible is that place to western teams that are not in driving distance?

So are you all saying that if Wyo made i to the Sugar Bowl or the Orange Bowl you wouldn't go?
I don't think it matter where Wyo goes bowling. The fact is, that "THEY" go bowling! Fans have always found a way to get to the games. And I'm sure most of you all would too. And for all you living in the Wyo area Shreveport isn't all that much further than Vegas or ponsietta.
Quit complaining and be happy that your team is more than likely going bowling for the third time in seven years.

Let's compare apples to apples here. The Sugar Bowl isn't even comparable to Independence Bowl. Would people rather travel to Laramie to watch Texas play or Nex Mexico? Was the University begging people to attend the Texas or Nebraska game? No, they weren't. Teams, locations, dates, DO matter. These smaller bowls, in the big picture, do not matter. Therefore, if a bowl game is closer to the fanbase, that is what it is about. We may be able to do a recruiting trip in TX/LA is we go there, but why do they play the game? It is for the University which is the fanbase shelling out money to watch them. New Mex this year would turn into a home game for UW.

So would I be willing to shell out $500 to fly to Dallas then DRIVE 2+ hours to Shreveport? Yes, for a BCS game. Most people would. However, for a bowl game the day after Christmas where we would maybe get 1000 fans, not happening for most people.

A Saturday noon NM Bowl would draw easy 5k+ fans. I went two years ago and the NM football fans had something to cheer about as well. We had a lot of support and this year it would even be more.

As for saying "well Shreveport has an airport bigger than Laramie's".... well, there is a reason people fly into Denver and drive up. My hometown in Wyo has an airport too. Doesn't mean it is accessible worth a shi. I've already looked at airfare into Shreveport. I couldn't find any major airline that could get me there. Everything directd me to Dallas and had me drive. The cost of ONE WAY ticket to LA is more than roundtrip, hotel, food and game ticket to NM. For fans, it is not even debatable. NM = more fan support.

Amen.

I have done the drive from Shreveport to Cheyenne...about a day and a half. It's not that bad. I bet some of our players would rather play in Shreveport, because its a lot closer to their home towns, and more of their family/friends will be able to go to the game. Any bowl is good for the program...but don't count out one location because you don't want to go there or because you don think Wyo fans wouldn't show up because historically we have never been there.

The bad thing is the bowl no one wants has the highest payout of all the MWC bowl tie-ins.

The difference in payout between the Independence Bowl and the NM bowl means diddly squat to me as a fan. All of these lower tier bowls are a struggle for most schools to break even at. The only way the schools makes up the cost of the bowl is, you guessed it, ticket sales. A big part of the bowls payout is simply giving the university tickets, which the university has to turn around and sell to cover the cost of the bowl. If the university can't sell the tickets they just have to eat the cost.

Now where would our university sell more tickets? Louisiana or NM?

As to the comparison between that bowl and the Sugar Bowl, LOL. Are you kidding? And the difference between a 20 hour drive to Louisiana and a 8 hour or 12 hour drive to NM or Vegas is VERY noticeable, especially since you'd have to spend your Christmas somewhere in the panhandle of North Texas.

Read Death to the BCS by Dan Wetzel. Pretty eye opening in terms of how little schools make off bowls. They had one example of how San Jose St and Florida Atlantic were bidding to get into the Motor City Bowl or something, but they weren't bidding high, they were bidding on how little of a payout they would take in order to make the post season. FAU took a bath on that bowl.

Hey i am a lobo fan and just want you to know that we would Love your team to participate in this years Bowl game here in Albuquerque. One thing i got to state to you is that the New Mexico Bowl is ONLY 5 years old, Holiday Bowl, Sun bowl, even the Fiesta bowl was NOTHING at one time. I know Jeff Simbeida is a Great guy and he runs this event and this IS becoming more of an attractive event to come to. We had the Wac involved at one time, now we got a pac12 team and i am hearing soon we might now get a higher pac12 team next year, so it takes time to develop a bowl game. I can PROMISE YOU one thing is that this bowl game will be a big bowl game soon and will be more of a high profile bowl. They do so many different events for the teams coming out here. and they are giving gifts to the players comparable to many of the High profile bowls. Also it is the ONLY bowl game at that time. So you WILL HAVE THE SPOTLIGHT WITH NO OTHER TEAMS PLAYING COLLEGE FOOTBALL. SO I REALLY HOPE YOU GUYS CAN MAKE THIS GAME AND GOOD LUCK!

I did think that playing that bowl as early as we did in 2009 was beneficial for exposure purposes.

It's hard to say. When you play on a day with other bowl games, the chance that somebody chooses to watch Wyoming over, say, Syracuse or Illinois is close to non-existent, so it's all about who we play instead. When you're the only bowl game on that certain day, people will watch just to see college football, regardless of the teams...

I'm really kind of hoping that we get to go to Albuquerque. I'd be able to make the game, and I've heard nothing but good things about the game day experience from people that went a few years ago. It's also nice to have the support of another MWC city for our team!

I think it's the best Bowl Game for us still based on time of the game. In 09 the goal line stand seen by the entire college football fan base is something if the game would have been played a week later no one would have seen but wyo/fresno fans.

Anyway I'm just excited for a really good turn around this season DC has done a lot for this team!

Where are the Pokes vulnerable vs NM? We all know that NM is terrible, but what are their numbers like rushing this year? I looked at a few stats, nothing great, but our run D has been suspectable. We are getting better for sure, but....
