Nebraska Scrimmage

NCAA rules have changed regarding what can be reported from these "secret" scrimmages, so we are starting to see reports come out regarding the Pokes scrimmage at Nebraska today. They include the following (taken from Gags Twitter and the press release from Nebraska):

The first portion was situational and the reports indicate Nebraska out scored Wyoming during those sessions, but I wouldn't read anything into it as it wasn't a live/real situation.

The second portion was a live scrimmage with three periods:

1. 20 minute period- Pokes won 40-37

2. 10 minute period- tied 19-19

3. 6 minute session featuring the "younger" players from each team- Nebraska won 9-2


Gags also reported a few stats:

Adams - led all scorers with 22
Barnes- 8 pts/5 Rebs
Lieberman- 7 points
Washington- 8 points


Quick thoughts:

1. Never read too much into these results.

2. Relatively high scoring rate for the 20 and 10 min periods.

3. The press release described the last session as using younger players, but for us that could be a lot of guys. I assume that included Averbuck, Kelley, etc.

4. Josh Adams will clearly be the go to guy (Shocking, I know). He seems ready, just check the video he posted on his Twitter feed. Nasty dunk he delivered in the scrimmage, reminded me of his dunk against Southern last year which remains one of the more awe inspiring athletic feats I have seen. This wasn't that good, but still impressive.

5. Pokes held their own against a Big 10 squad in their environment. Doesn't mean much, but good experience for this young team.

That dunk was nasty. What sticks out is the fact Barnes scored 8 points. That could be a good sign. Same with Washington and his 7.

Loved Adams dunk, personally I like this on better than the one against Southern, mainly because he posters the guy trying to defend. The Southern dunk was awesome too, but no one stepped up to fill the lane on that one.

You don't know shit. If freshman are starting, isn't that an indictment of the previous recruiting? Shy will start people that have actually played and he can trust defensively.

I know yourself and a few others on here have thought we would have lots of depth this year but I have thought the opposite to be honest.
I have thought all along that this year would most likely be a year where we have to do some rebuilding. Sure we have some talented young guys on our team but the fact is they are young so I don't really call that "depth".

Unless they can come in and give you enough contribution to help you win games then I wouldn't all it depth. I think they will be good in the future but this year after losing 4 senior starters it will be tough. The freshman and newcomers we have are the best crop Shyatt has gotten so far but they aren't UNLV type of freshman. Wyoming will never get those type of freshman so I haven't really understood the depth talk.

Shyatt is a good coach and he will coach them up and they might surprise me but for someone to say "the recruiting is a fail" is pretty outlandish. The recruiting is just fine and this team will be good over the next couple of years, it will just take some time for the young guys to get acclimated. Anyone expecting them to compete for the top 4 in the conference this year I think is a little far fetched after losing 4 senior starters. Give them time to let Shyatt develop them.

I still think by the end of the year they can be a pretty tough team but would expect a CBI invite with a possible NIT but that might be asking much for this season.

I can understand the excitement after last years tourney win but going to be tough to replace 4 senior starters.

I don't doubt you guys are right about this idea that the older guys will get first chance. I'm just hoping that talent says James, moemeka, Marshall all see the floor. Imo that means the program is headed in the right direction. Shouldn't they have out recruited trey Washington and mcM by now?

Depth includes both talent and experience. This team by most accounts has talent; Papa Shy has already said some 10 or 11 will play. But toward the end of the season I suspect several of the frosh will be playing more minutes then they play in November and december.

By your logic that'd be like saying Larry nance jr should have been starting as a freshman because he had more talent than Washington. Do I think the frosh have more talent than some of the other guys? Sure. Are they more game ready? No way.

We have a developmental program. Larry Shyatt turns players with few offers into first round picks in the draft. Thats because he teaches them how to be aggressive, disciplined and unselfish. Players that have been in the program longer know what Shyatt expects. Freshmen haven't been developed at all yet, with the exception of this summers practices.

We only have three upper classmen. One of them, Morris Marshall, is as green as the freshmen to Shys system. Its no surprise that the veterans in Shys system are the projected starters. He has had time to mold them and teach them his requirements to make the floor. They've had time to earn his trust.

This freshman class is as good as anyone can remember, but that doesn't mean they know much that Shy is trying to teach them. They've have no d1 experience. That's no ones fault. Shy is going to start who he trusts at this point. The new guys haven't had any opportunities to earn that yet.

I think the guys on the roster will win multiple MWC titles and have NCAA tournament success. They just need time in the developmental program to turn potential and talent into reality.

Saying that if we don't start freshmen this year, our program is taking a step backward, might be the dumbest thing I've ever read on this board.

We have a great staff and we should expect the veterans to start. They've had time to learn and be developed by Shy and company.

Dave Rice starts blue chip freshman every year and last year finished seventh in the MWC. Shy started four seniors and won a title.
