MWC Hoops

Would love to see this scenario play out:

Boise goes into SD and edges SDSU on Saturday. Marks and Webb go off from three (could happen). Note: Boise controlled and dominated the first meeting. Still reeling, the Aztecs limp into Vegas and get upset by highly erratic UNLV. Aztecs are, again, miserable on the offensive end.

WYO gets Nance back. Pokes win both home games against FSU and USU. They find a way to get past highly inconsistent UNLV and UNM on the road. Can they do this with a healthy and productive Nance?

Pokes tie Boise for regular season conference title and get the #1 seed by virtue of the head-to-head win. :thumb:

So if that were to play out we would probably play UNLV or Fresno St. in the first round of the MWC tournament and then play CSU or Utah St. in the semi's.

I wouldn't mind playing Fresno in the first round I think on a neutral floor we beat them fairly easily.

It's a bit of a long shot, but it's far from impossible. SDSU is fully capable of losing any game due to their offensive struggles. I'm not making an argument that Wyoming isn't, but I'm simply saying that SDSU can - and very well may - lose a game or two down the stretch.

I was thinking about this last night. If we end up having to play UNLV in the first round of the tournament, it sure wouldn't be ideal, but the silver lining would be that it could help our RPI by having another decent road win in the books. It would be especially nice to play them as the #1 seed because the game will be played at noon on a Thursday. UNLV fans won't be there, but the game would still count as a road game as far as the RPI calculation is concerned.

we keep winning to stay in the 2 seed, then we don't have to face SDSU until the Finals, if we both get there, but they got Polee back and that's extremely dangerous, imo.....i don't care who we play we'll make noise this conf tourney!!!!

I'm saying NM gets fed up with losing and beats Boise tonight. Boise gets pissed off, beats SDSU. We win out in our last 4 regular season games. SDSU and Wyo are Co-Champs, 1 and 2 seeds. Boise is not at our level, so that should help any leap frogging incase we lose in MWC-Tourney, and still give us a MWC title, meaning we play SDSU in the championship game.

I'd love to see UNM beat Boise but with their trainwreck happening now, I just don't see it, and we need USU to mop shop with UNLV tonight....we'll tune in and see what happens

Well if we want any shot at an at-large via automatic consideration with a split MWC championship, I think having 2 or 3 wins over Top 100 RPI UNLV would help. Last I saw, UNLV was right at 100-ish. So them beating USU would boost their RPI.

But at this point, I just want the MWC Championship, and MWC Tourney Championship. 7 more wins until the Big Dance. Then hopefully at least 2 more!

You may be on to something. If UNLV could win all their games except for the Wyoming game, we would at least be co-champs and UNLV could maybe slip into the #6 seed. Of course I'm assuming we win out, but who isn't? :winky:

I just know that a win over Fresno tomorrow brings us one more win closer to our goal. :)

This is exactly what the team has to focus on. We as fans can look ahead at future games and dream about the end result though.

There is no "at-large by automatic consideration." Even if SDSU loses two game and we win out and we were regular season champs by ourselves, no split-title, WE ARE NOT in the running for an at-large. Boggles my mind that some still are thinking about this. It's MW tournament or bust.

I disagree. We are not today, but if we somehow outright won the regular season title (longshot), I think we'd have a chance. Conference titles go a long way...there has never been an MWC champ to not get an at large berth, including Wyo in 2002. In fact, I believe our RPI should this play out will be similar to the 2002 team's.

I hope I didn't further boggle your mind.

No, he shouldn't because he is right. We have zero, ZERO chance of an at-large birth. There is nothing we can do in the next 6 games to change that.

There are going to be a lot of butt hurt people on here if we win out but lose the tourney championship when we don't get a bid...ain't happening.

You should probably consider reading http://www.wyonation.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=4&t=12241" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; as it proves exactly opposite that you are so dead set to believe.

3. The committee will form an "underconsideration” board consisting of an alphabetical listing of teams that:

a. Received at least three votes in either of the columns of the initial ballot but did not receive enough votes to be an at large team;

or

b. Won or shared the regular-season conference championship, as determined by the conference’s tie-break policy where applicable. This does not include teams that won or shared a division title but were not the regular-season conference champion.

While I agree that we will not receive an at-large, if we won a share of the regular season title we would be included in the teams discussed by the selection committee ( see seattlecowboy's post about procedures). Of course, so will the Big Sky regular season champion so it doesn't mean much.

And what do you know when you tell us there is nothing we can do in the last six (6) games when in fact we only have four (4) left?
Study up some more, your missing intricate details.
I honestly believe that is we finish this season 3-1 or 4-0 we are in the running for an at large bid. With who we have left to play and looking at teams surrounding us in the RPI and who they have left to play, I could honestly see us in the low to mid 60's RPI by the end of the regular season. On top of that I just really don't believe this team to be a one and done in the conf tourney. And if my projection continues to play out we will be a two seed playing UNLV for our first test the we get Boise and then (like I said, this is my projection) we get CSU after they knock off SDSU in the champ. Now, I believe we can beat them, but it is tough to beat a team three times in a row. I have us down as a win. That puts us at 3-1 from here on out to make us 24-7 and 3-0 in conf tourney. 27-7 and were auto when it comes to the tourney. Say we lose in the conf champ, that puts us at 26-8 and a high enough rating to be considered an at large bid.
We'll just have to see what happens...
