MWC bowl question?

Assuming TCU beats UNM and goes to a BCS bowl, is it correct that the rest of the MWC bowls do not have to take teams in order that they finish in the conference? So Vegas gets first choice of any of the rest of the teams, followed by Poinsettia, Armed Forces, and New Mexico? Or is the Vegas bowl bound to take the #2 finisher, Poinsettia #3 and so on?

That's correct. The bowls get to choose based on their preference. The standings don't officially factor in to the decision. Obviously there are a lot of times when the higher placed team will be more attractive for matchups, etc., but if the Las Vegas Bowl wants a 6-6 BYU over a 11-1 TCU (hypothetically), they could take BYU.

If the Pokes beat CSU, I assume we will be in the New Mexico Bowl. Otherwise we will be back in the toilet bowl as usual. Huge stakes for our program this week.

we gotta win friday then we have a bowl game and a win there meansrecruiting

I don't actually think a win on Friday means THAT much in terms of recruiting. What it does mean is that the team gets a bunch of extra practices allowed, which is a HUGE deal for a young team like ours.

I think gopokes meant a win in a bowl game means recruiting.

i thought there were some rules (maybe internal) that the mwc bowls had to select mwc teams with more div 1 wins over other mwc teams - meaning that had we won one more game in 2006 and been 7-5 (rather than 6-6) NM bowl had to select us over 6-6 NM? maybe that was just for host teams, or maybe i'm just wrong or confused. i swear i read or heard that somewhere but im not sure where now. i would love some decisive verification. i thought it was put in place to prevent another 10-2 team from being skipped over like the 1996 UW team.

NO BOWL FOR THE POKES! How do I know? Scout.com says so in today's Denver Post. Scout.com projection for the New Mexico Bowl: Kansas vs Fresno State (because no MWC team projected available). For the Humanitarian Bowl: UCLA vs Idaho (again no MWC team projected available). That must mean they think CSU will beat Wyo Friday.

I think what you're talking about is something different. The MWC has its bowl tie ins. However they aren't necessarily tied to places. Las Vegas Bowl gets 1st pick, technically they don't have to take the 1st place team. They take whatever team is most marketable for them. Usually a 1st place team is the most marketable, but if Wyoming was 10-2 and BYU was 9-3, believe they'd choose BYU because BYU travels so well.

The rule about 7-5 teams is in terms of filling at large bowls across the nation when conferences don't have enough bowl-eligible teams. A 7-5 team has to be taken before a 6-6 team. This rule was instated to prevent situations such as 1996 Wyo team. But that is FBS-wide, not just MTN west. Inside the conference, there is no clause dealing with records.

In 2006 it was the New Mexico Bowl's turn to pick and they had to choose from 6-6 Wyoming or 6-6 New Mexico. Obviously New Mexico was a more marketable pick.

The FCS wins thing is FBS wide as well i believe. You can only use 1 win every 2 years or something to count towards Bowl-eligibility. So if Wyoming goes bowling this year and goes 6-6 next year, I don't think they'd be eligible because they already would have already used the Weber St. win this year. Don't quote me on that last one though.

ok, i could have swore i read somewhere that if we had finished 7-5 in 2006 the NM bowl would have had to select us instead of 6-6 NM, but your saying that is not the case. but it sounds like we would have filled other bowls before 6-6 teams did. sounds reasonable but not how i remembered it. makes sense though. so does that mean NM can choose NM every year they get 6 wins? that doesn't sound right, either. if so we need to dome the war and host a bowl as well. polaris or arctic cat could sponsor as that may be the only way some folks could get there.

If I remember correctly the NM Bowl can only take New Mexico once every four years if someone else is available and has a better record. Example: 6-6 New Mexico will not be able to be picked over any other 6-6 MWC team if they have been picked in the same situation in the last four years.
