MWC board talk about adding Boise State

According to some over there, they say Boise has a letter in hand about being invited to the MWC in the spring. While I doubt this is true what is everyone's thoughts on this?

I am not that big on the idea of adding Boise State, but I do see a couple of advantages.

First off I think most conferences tend to play 8 conference games, and 4 non-conference games. I like that our conference currently does that, as it gives us a chance to play a lot of other non-conference opponents. If we add Boise State it might lead to the MWC making every one play 9 conference games which I would be against.

I would be in favor of adding Boise State if we still only played 8 conference games and then the MWC added a MWC championship game. This would add one more game for the best 2 school's in the conference, which would add excitement for theose schools fans and a fun game to go to. I think it would also be important to put this in a decent size stadium, something like Invesco Field, or where San Diego State currently plays (the Holiday Bowl), allowing for large crowds. This would also eliminate the problem that the Big 10 has where a school can win the conference without playing every school in the conference, and without winning a championship game.

I would also be in favor of adding Boise State if this got the MWC an automatic bid to a BCS bowl, and perhaps a way to tie-in to some of the other bigger bowl games.

In order to have an MWC Championship game, the conference would have to invite 2 more to bring the total to 12.....which I think will eventually happen by 2012 or sonner.....

The 11th member will be Fresno State. As for the 12th member, I'm guessing either Nevada OR Hawai'i.

This sort of defeats the purpose of the Mountain West's formation. The MWC broke off because of the over saturation of the WAC.

That being said, I do like adding Boise st. Any more publicity for our conference is a good thing. I just don't want to expand any further.

I'm totally in favor of adding 3 schools, going to conf. title game, etc....

But no more than 12 members.

I like the idea of a 12 team conference, broke up into a Pacific and Mountain division which would keep all the old MWC rivalries in tact, plus each school in the MWC gets one vote so the schools control the conference, the WAC wasn't that way thats why it got out of control. I would propose this:

Mountain:
Wyoming
BYU
Utah
CSU
AFA
Boise State*

Pacific:
UNLV
SDSU
TCU
NM
Fresno (assuming all their past issues have been cleaned up)*
New Mexico State* (other choices here could be Nevada-Reno, or Hawaii which has some percs but also has a huge travel cost associated with it)

* denotes new team to conference

Terrible idea IMO! Conferences are about more than football. Boise St is not up to par academically with the rest of the MWC.

My ideal Mountain West-12....

Mountain Division
WYOMING COWBOYS
Air Force Falcons
Colorado State Rams
Boise State Broncos
New Mexico Lobos
TCU Horned Frogs

Pacific Division
HAWAI'I WARRIORS
BYU Cougars
Fresno State Bulldogs
San Diego State Aztecs
UNLV Rebels
Utah Utes

Wyokie - While I do like the balance your division setup has, I remember one of the biggest complaints with the Super WAC was the loss of yearly rivalries. Given 5 games against your own division, it is a safe assumtion that teams would play 3 games per year against conference opponents from the other division (and 4 Non-conf games). With your setup we would only play BYU or Utah every other year, and only once every 4 years at home. Those games are usually big attendance draws and the rivalry isn't one if its not played yearly. Just my opinion.

A lot of Nebraska and Oklahoma bitched about being placed in seperate divisions when the Big 12 was formed and so far no one gripped since so........

Snowman... I would rename your divisions North and South.

All else...Right now, I would prefer adding Boise St and dumping SDSU, keeping it at 9 teams...but then SDSU would rack up a lot of wins in the WAC and become a well known program. After Boise St starts losing 3 or more conf games a year they will not be as prestigious, become a mid conf program and we will be looking to add back SDSU. I know Boise St fans would argue they have a great record vs MWC teams, blah, blah, blah, I agree they would be a top 3 to 4 team initially, but some of those recruits they get for having undefeated WAC seasons & Thursday night ESPN games would start thinning out in my opinion. Truthfully, I am jealous of thier program and think they "feel" like a MWC team. Wyoming has a hard enough time getting conf wins, adding another good program would make it even harder.

I also think that other than CSU and AFA the other MWC teams may have in the back of their heads they want to dump US in favor of Boise St.

GO POKES, BEAT UNLV.

Tiny bit of discussion on eGriz about it too:

Why does there have to be 12 teams to have a championship game? Is there a specific rule about that? Or is it just due to the other conferences that currently have championship games having 12 members? Just curious if there is specific NCAA rules regarding that.

Yes I don't know the specific rule but the NCAA does say you have to have 12 teams to be able to play a conference championship game.

I dont think its true about BSU, but who knows. I would be against it. I fail to see how this would benefit Wyoming in any way. I agree that there may be schools in the conf right now that would like to dump Wyoming. So we should be careful about having the MWC looking around for new additions. The addition of a championship game would be a distaster for the MWC. That would pit the #1, and #2 teams. Remember, a MWC pretty much HAS to be undefeated to get a BCS bowl. A championship game would be just another HUGE roadblock to that happening. And really, why would Boise agree to come here. Its just anothe non-bcs conference; they would never go undefeated again; and they would not be on ESPN anymore. I see no upside for them.

Im not sure about all the upsides for Boise, but they have been wanting into the MWC for quite a while. I'm guessing they might actually get more money, definitiely better compitition, and lets face it as far as "mid majors" go the MWC is the big dog at least at the moment. They submitted paperwork to be considered the same time TCU did. As for the 12 team conference I see an upside. First a championship game is extra money for the conference, and its extra publicity because its played on a day when less than ten other games are going on. Also it gives pollsters a chance to see the MWC's best at the end of the season instead of basing things off just regular season games. Besides how often do we have an undefeated team at the end of the season, and if they really are good enough for a BCS game, they should be good enough to win a MWC championship game.

Adding BSU makes sense both for football and basketball. Which we all know runs college athletics. It helps the conference in terms of strength for football and if it would allow the MWC to get an auto bid to the BCS then I'm all for it. I believe that Boise already gets the mtn channel so that is a positive in terms of tv but them leaving espn with the WAC contract might take some convincing. I would like to see an agreement where games are shown on ESPN and the mtn. But the problem with ESPN is that they want to dictate when we play and who knows it could be always on Friday night or some other crappy night that doesn't work well for Wyoming.

For basketball it would create the traditional travel partners which makes scheduling easier and better.

Football schedules it could help all the teams strength of schedule and we wouldn't have to worry about some home and home agreements with current BCS conferences that they don't want to live up to.
