Montana State......

We must have watched different teams this year.

Not that this will likely change your mind but here are the end of season Sagarin Rankings based purely on computers:

Montana State - Ranked 47
Illinois State - Ranked 87
Wyoming - Ranked 127

Teams Wyoming Beat in Sagarin:
Akron - 151
Northern Iowa -180
San Jose State - 145
Colorado State - 147
(you read that right, we didn't beat a team that had a better Sagarin rating than our lowly 127)

Team Wyoming Lost to in Sagarin:
Utah - 9 (best team Wyoming played)
Colorado - 93 (shitty team that destroyed us)
UNLV - 74
Air Force - 105
San Diego State - 69
Fresno State - 80
Nevada - 138 (yes we lost to a team at home on Josh Allen jersey retirement day that Sagarin says was even worse than us)
Hawaii - 84

Conclusion: We suck. We didn't beat a team with a pulse this past year. Montana State would have pulled their starters against us in the 3rd quarter up 31-3 had we played them.

I take those ranking systems with a massive grain of salt and how they rank lower division teams. I doubt they would have a better record than us had they played the same schedule

You are kidding right? I just posted the cupcake schedule we played to a 4-8 record.

You think Nevada beats Montana State? You think Air Force beats Montana State? Or you think Montana State loses to San Jose State, Colorado State, Northern Iowa or Akron?

I am really going to laugh if you say Colorado State beats Montana State. Montana State beat Northern Colorado 55-7 in Greeley. Colorado State lost (saved by the refs) to Northern Colorado in Fort Collins.

There was a time when any bottom third FBS school would be consistently favored against even the tippy top of the FCS...those days are long gone. People are slow to update how they view this stuff...it's hard for a proud Wyoming-ite to admit that the state to the north is fielding some very fine teams at this point that would have been heavily favored against the pokes for the last couple years. Not only that...they are doing it with less resources!

That is questionable. It is possible that the schools to the North are paying their players more than we are and attracting better players. This was stated to be true in a Cowboy State Daily Article but given the nature of secretive NIL funding I am not sure whether it is true or not that the Montanas are paying players more than we are.

ah yes...my resources comment is my own failure to update my mental model to include what NIL can do.

No, not joking

Montana and Montana State would have beaten last year’s UW team, easily. I have no doubt about that. I’m not sure if Wyoming could have beaten a decent D3 school last season.
