Larry Shyatt's post game comment

If I may?

I believe that what ItSucksToBeACSURam means to say, is that after such a great win by the Pokes the other night, Shyatt's comment was ill-suited for the moment and that it was out of place after such a terrific comeback victory.

Shyatt, it might be argued, has become overly defensive this season and acutely sensitive to any kinds of perceived criticism...criticism that other than on a message board like this one I haven't been able to locate specifically.

I have to agree on one hand that Shyatt's commentary at times seems to suggest that anyone who follows the Pokes should be content with what they see no matter what - and that any criticism is off base after any kind of a performance.

As to the attendance issue, I believe the attendance this season has been appropriate. I think the sports department has to be pretty satisfied with the turnouts thus far. I'll also agree with anyone who might feel that the program needs more sustained winning without the second half swoons we've seen the last 3 years in order for more people to take the team more seriously - and thus fill the building more.

The bottom line to me is that Wyoming needs to get back to the Big party in order for more people to stand up and take notice of Pokes basketball...it is in this area that Shyatt has yet to deliver the goods, and perhaps being aware of this he deflects with commentary about 'this special group'...and while I really like this year's team I want more.

There are times where Shyatt seems to indicate that while we all want more -- we should instead live in the moment and be appreciative of what we have in reality and to not think about dreaming bigger and better.

I have zero problem with what he said. Cuz if he wants to stick up for his guys, hes the coach and he should be. But my main reason I have no problem is that he wasn't calling anyone out or trying to insult anyone. The way I read it was just a general statement trying to be funny. Like saying "this team is so much fun to watch, if you can't enjoy watching them play there isn't much I can do for ya(buy you kansas tickets). I don't see him complaining just comenting on this team and how great they are. And I agree completely. I have had so much fun watching this team play, its sad the seasons almost over.
Shyatt has been extremely complimentary about the crowds recently including the SJSU game, so I don't think there is anyway he was complaining.

I agree 100%, He doesn't always come off as joking even when he is and some people can't tell the difference between the two hell I can't half the time but I think he was just making a wise crack and not being critical.

I feel like this is a pretty accurate assessment. While I understand what Coach Shyatt is saying, I do think that he needs to tone it down a bit. There's a fine line between motivating fans to come to the games and being ungrateful of your fan base. We know that you think the world of this team, Coach. We do too. The problem is we get kicked in the nuts year in and year out by this basketball team. Forgive our skepticism, but we've been down this road before. Write us a different ending and we'll start believing.

Couldn't have said it better myself.

I'm on board with these

Lol yeah I never thought he was actually getting pissy with the fans but making a joke. Leave it to the interwebs to run wild with it though, and start disliking coach shyatt.

That is a little extreme Beav - not sure anyone here is disliking coach Shyatt.

That said, he certainly has a track record for speaking out about how awful the UW fanbase is, attendance / attitude / all. And I completely disagree with him...we have been dick whipped as a fanbase in basketball for more than 12 years. A few CBI's, a head-kick, an ACL, and some mono - what is really expected these days?

Come on BeaverPoke -- now I think you're the one who is overreacting a little bit here. Nobody said anything about disliking the coach.

Fuckin A right they are bad. The administration that is - they are a GD joke.

Not sure Larry is part of the Administration though, ok Monkey Boy?

Whats funniest to me, through this whole thing, is how some of us get roasted for having the nerve to talk ill of Coach Shyatt yet its fair game when it comes to talking shit about Burman. One UW affiliate is fair game over the internet but not another. Haha what a joke. Hypocrisy in its definition.

For the record, I love Coach Shyatt. I run hot and am speak first, analyze later. I hate losing. I hate losing when its a situation where we could have won. I hate getting lambasted by teams that are worse than us. I am who I am. If this isnt the place to vent and talk (good or bad) about the Pokes I may just head on down the dusty trail some where else.

Our attendance this year certainly should be better IMO, but still we are averaging 6400 per game (7700 in MWC play). How many programs in the country would have a similar attendance if they had the following:

1. One NCAA appearance in the last 27 years.

2. No NIT/NCAA appearances in the 12 years.

3. A RPI of approximately 80 and limited chances of earning a NCAA bid

There are some, but not many. Now, how many programs combine those factors with a very sparse population and difficult winter travel conditions? I am going to go out on a limb and say it narrows it down to one.

I love Shyatt. Think he is doing a great job. I just think that a coach, player, whomever, can take a little criticism from time to time. Including the fans.

Social media is an easy forum to see what is being said. If people are talking "@" players and coaches, they (COACHES) can't control that. But if they are seeking out message boards and then getting all butthurt about what is being said, well, maybe you shouldn't have been on the offense and started reading.

I got lit up for saying that our team was playing pathetic vs Nevada. This just in...we were.
I got lit up for criticizing Hankerson for playing like crap. This just in....he was playing like crap.
On and on.

Funny, though, that people wait until AFTER we win, or AFTER Hankerson finally hits some shots to call me out. It is silly.

No one is calling for Shyatt's job. Sure he was sticking up for the players, but I also will stick up to fans who also dump a lot of time and money into HIS team also. It goes both ways. Praises and criticism.

COWBOY UP EVERYONE! COACH SHYATT, PLAYERS, FANS! GROW A SET AND STOP BEING SO OFFENDED AT EVERYTHING!

I get your point but HATE when people bring in the traveling and population.

Why? Because people can justify it for anything. It becomes the huge glaring asterisk***

We could have 1000 people show up and we would be hearing the population and traveling excuse- and yes although it is a reality it is still an excuse.

It tries to make us look better than what we are.

Sure we only get X amount of fans but considering our population it's not too bad compared to schools in cities.

It's just an old and tired excuse and its a crappy one too. Our population wasn't very high back in the day when Wyo had 10K, 11K, 12K per game.

So can we stop trying to change the reality of the situation by trying to justify it by the population excuse?

I noticed that too. Whatev.

I admit, I haven't been to a game in Laramie this year. Every trip to Laramie is $500. Doesn't make me less of a fan. I haven't missed a game this year that I could have watched.

ITs a direct correlation though. If we suck, there will be no fans. If were good the fans will come out. ITs that simple. Just because 20 years ago we averaged 12K doesn't mean we should be today. 20 years ago we had a history of being good. Today we don't. I think were getting there and the fan turn out is coming back. It may be a shitty excuse to some but it is a legit issue. Laramie is a small town in the least populated state and as such the team will have to perform for fans to tune in.

I just try to avoid the boards during the game. I don't always do it, but try to.

I agree though, the boards do tend to get dramatic and call people out.
But I don't think it is always calling people out, I think it is calling out the attitudes of the people.

And yes the first half we played TERRIBLY in Reno.
And Hankerson did come through great in the end. FINALLY!

Sorry if you thought I was one of the people calling you out and attacking you afterwards.

I am just glad we won the game, and that we have a team that is getting healthy and peaking right now.
