Josh Allen Number being retired

What do you guys think of Josh Allen number being retired in November?

I personally don't understand it. He was good at Wyoming but he was not great! I believe you have to be a great player to have your number retired.

There's no one player that has done more to put the University of Wyoming on the map. I agree that his college career doesn't make a good case for a number retirement (and I would argue that #23 should be retired before any other number), but the fact that he continues to promote Wyoming publicly while being as big a star as he is makes for an interesting argument.

Galand Thaxton Marcus Harris Yarborough or even Brian Hill but you do bring up a good point of keeping Wyoming on the map

This came about mostly as a result of a proposal from the ASUW Senate that was sent to President Seidel and the BoT. That's what got the ball rolling on this.

I was shocked to learn that UW had never retired a football number before. If you are going to retire #17 for Josh Allen, you absolutely retire #23 for Marcus Harris.

A school/team/franchise can retire whoever's number they want for whatever reason they want. It's their honor to bestow. It doesn't always have to be about numbers or accolades. It could be about how a player endears him/herself to the community and fans. Allen has continued to represent the university and fans for the 7 years since going to the NFL. If the university wants to honor him for that alone, totally good with it.

I’d say from a college perspective, a Biletnikoff winner had a better argument to have their number retired. However, no player has come close to putting Wyoming on the map like Josh Allen and I support the decision.

This actually raises a great debate - which we absolutely should have: if you retire 17, what others should be retired?

Thaxton
Harris
Yarborough
Kiick
Novacek
Christopherson
Huey
House
Toscano
Jerry Hill
Vic Washington
Logan Wilson
Fantetti
Talboom
Donahue

If you retire any more, I think you have to start with Yarborough and Harris. And I believe you either retire the numbers of both or neither. Yarborough was just inducted into the college football hall of fame this year.

The only other two that I would like to see retired would be Marcus Harris (#23) and Ryan Yarborough (#16). They were prolific at UW and anyone who knows anything about Wyoming football knows those two names. Harris was a consensus first team All-American, won the Biletnikoff Award, and finished in the top 10 for Heisman voting.

Another name that I would add to your list for sake of debate would be Brian Lee. Back to back 8 interception seasons - dude was a force.
