Jackson State @ Wyo

Another "Global Sports Main Event" game.
CU worked this team today by 24. JSU also lost to Arkansas State by 4.
Their only win is against AFA. Which, I think is funny. Another team that was easily ahead of us last year in the MWC, that we should definitely be better than now.

Wyo should blow JSU out monday

I don't know about a blowout, but Jacksonville should be worn out by the time they get here - a 3 game road trip at elevation. But they may be more athletic than teams yet faced, just less skilled.

After watching the Pokes against Arkansas State, I don't see ANY reason why we shouldn't run Jackson State out of the AA.

Especially with the way the Pokes ran saturday. It was like watching McClains teams run. It was fun as hell.
That, and the team is still figuring out how to play together.

What I love most about the team Shyatt has this year is the fact that you watch them play, and they look like they genuinely like being out there and even moreso, look like they like each other. This is a tight team. They're fun to watch

You can really tell the guys who played street ball with each other all summer when they are running

+1

And they look like they are having just as much fun as a pick up street ball game while doing it.

Wish I could attend this game tomorrow. I can't wait. This team is going to be fun to watch, especially against non-MWC teams.

We might look better and have more highlights against ooc teams but I can't wait for the MWC games, in Laramie, with that team tgat showed up for Arky St

Oh don't get me wrong, I LOVE MWC ball, but watching this team against OOC teams will be like watching the Heat play. Just total domination and tons of dunks and big plays.

That game on Saturday certainly was a fun one to watch. It was the most fun I've had watching a Cowboy basketball team within the last 5 years. That being said, it's only one game. I certainly don't think it's realistic to expect the Pokes to perform to that level in the majority of their remaining games, even in the out-of-conference schedule against less talented squads. It will be interesting to see how Shyatt employs this fast break style of play as the season progresses. Will he revert to the grinding half-court offense when we go up against teams with more talent? We should find out soon when the team travels to Columbus to take on Ohio State. Of course, the next item of business is Jackson State tonight!

Player to Watch: Julysses Nobles (G, 6'1, 200 lbs, Sr.)
Mr. Nobles doesn't do anything great, but he does do a lot of things very well. A true combo guard, he has the vision and passing ability of a point guard coupled with the skills to score the basketball. At only 6'1, he does a tremendous job of rebounding the basketball. In fact, he is second on the team in rebounding average this season. This is his first, an only, season suiting up for Jackson State. He was offered scholarship by several high-major schools coming out of high school, including Baylor, Florida Sate, and Wichita State. He ultimately chose to sign with Arkansas and played his first three season there, where he earned a starting spot in his sophomore and junior seasons. He sat out last year due to transfer rules, but has been one of the few bright spots for Jackson State in this young season. I suspect Josh Adams will be tasked with the assignment of shutting Nobles down. If Jackson State has any hope of leaving Laramie with a win, they will need a big night from Nobles.

Jackson State was picked to finish 5th in the 10 team SWAC in the preseason poll. They did manage to pull out a win on the road over a weak Air Force squad, but have struggled otherwise. They are wrapping up a prolonged trip to the front range and cobmined with the superior athleticism of the Pokes, I expect the Cowboys will look to run at every opportunity again. This should be another fun game to watch as a Cowboy basketball fan. Don't miss it!

Great write up realUW.What's up with these small schools getting these big time transfers?
Why go from playing in the SEC for 3 seasons to Jackson State?
And I bet these guys confidence will be up since they beat AFA. They will likely be thinking "well AFA was better than Wyoming last season"

In Nobles case, he has a long history with Jackson State's coach, Wayne Brent. Before moving to the college game, Wayne Brent was a very successful Mississippi high school basketball coach. Nobles actually played for Brent at two different high schools, and they have a great relationship. While Nobles saw significant minutes at Arkansas, his play was very inconsistent there. There was really no reason to belive that would change if he stuck around. In the end, relationships are key when recruiting in college sports.

I don't think Jackson State will be coming in tonight's game with much confidence. They are coming off of an absolute whipping at the hands of Colorado and they also lost to Arkansas State earlier this year. To be honest, I highly doubt any of the players know anything about where Air Force and UW finished in the MWC last season.

Would love to see the Pokes come out and put JSU in a big hole early. Would like to see a scenario where we can get Haldorson more minutes and try to get him some experience. We will need minutes from him later in the season when foul trouble occurs in the front court.

On a random note, I bet we are the only team in the country that has a walk on averaging 1 minute per game who has more total rebounds than the team's leader in minutes (93) and points (42). That would be a 1-0 advantage.

Haldorson looked lost on Saturday. Like uncoordinated baby-gifaffe lost. Do you think game experience is what he needs to show any resemblance of being a basketball player?

I'm not sure. I actually thought he looked better last year, although we have had a very small sample size this year. I am hoping that some more in-game action at this level will help him get to the point where he can at least be trusted to be in the right spot on D and just react and play the game without looking tense. On offense he will be fine over the long run. Good shooter and nice touch even if he doesn't look smooth.

Speaking of Baby Giraffe...anyone remember that one kid we had a couple years ago by the name of Larry Nance JR?
He got rid of his wobbly legs and his awkward play, and is not a total beast.
Haldorson, might progress like Nance in a couple seasons.

The fall semester portion of Larry's freshman year was tough to watch. He clearly had a lot of upside, but he didn't really start to take off until the end of January/beginning of February. Haldorson will come around, it will just take some time.
