The problem isn't that the parties haven't talked, the problem is not that the trustees need to sign off (they really don't until after the fact due to Burman's budget authority), and the problem is not that Shyatt is asking for too much money. In fact Shyatt just wants enough years so that no one can use his contract and age to recruit against us. This is all about the staff, their years and their compensation.
Dave Christensen received a contract extension simply because Houston may or may not have wanted to interview him. I suppose negotiations were underway with him back then, but when it came to nut cutting time Burman got that deal signed in a matter of hours.
This athletic department, going back to Brandy, has ALWAYS valued football more than basketball. That's the reason that more than $90 million will have been poured into football facilities between 2000 and 2020 while the Arena sits unfinished because they were over budget by $3 million. And you can bet your goddamn life that if football won a conference title last year Craig Bohl would have had an extension in his inbox less than three days later.
I am told, and I believe, that there are reasons this isn't done, and in my opinion they are all stupid, pointless, shortsighted and the fault of the administration. If Burman and/or McGinity wanted this done by today it would be done by today. The fact that it's not two months after they announced they were in negotiations tells you all you need to know.
