Is Philip Nelson looking at Wyoming?

Minnesota ran the ball a lot. It won't be difficult to find a school that throws it more.

I don't know why everyone thinks Wyoming's offense is a running offense. It isn't. The West Coast offense is a passing offense. The version of if Bohl runs is smashmouth with power running, but it's still a passing offense. The games I watched of NDSU had great balance, but they aired it out a lot.

You mean the Division 2 (FCS)? I am not sure when people are going to realize that this is Division 1 (FBS).....for now...until Bohl and the blue hairs get Wyoming dropped down to the FCS.

You are a MORON!

So, what's the exciting part about this news? Might Nelson be an upgrade over some of the QBs on the current roster? Possibly. But coming from a native Minnesotan, who happened to watch a bunch of Gophers games this season, the reason there wasn't any passing from the Gophers was because both QBs were wholly incapable of throwing it into the general direction of any receiver. They ran all the time, because that's the only hope they had at moving the ball. Here are his stats from this season against teams that finished with winning records:

vs. UNLV: 10/22, 99 yards, 1 TD/1 INT
vs. SJSU: Didn't play
vs. Iowa: 12/24, 135 yards, 1/2
@ Michigan: Didn't play
vs. Nebraska: 7/15, 152 yards, 1/0
vs. Penn State: 15/24, 186 yards, 1/0
vs. Wisconsin: 7/23, 83 yards, 0/0
@ Michigan State: 6/18, 77 yards, 0/2
vs. Syracuse: 2/7, 18 yards, 0/0

So, in the 9 games against teams with winning records, he finished 59/133 (44%), 750 yards (5.6 ypa), 4 TDs, 5 INT.

While I wish the young man luck, those who may think this guy is the "perfect fit" for Wyoming has pretty low standards, and is setting themselves up for failure.

Damn, I guess Peyton Manning wasn't available this late in the recruiting season.

To Nelson's credit....the winning teams he faced were sliiiightly better than the winning teams we faced. By slightly, I mean light years.

Nobody said Peyton Manning was available. :brick:

I'm just trying to bring some actual scouting on the player (based on watching him play) to the discussion, as opposed to pushing the "well, he was a starter on a decent BCS team, this means he's awesome!!!" line that this thread was starting to head towards. Anytime he faced a halfway decent defense (Michigan State, Wisconsin, Iowa), the passing game disappeared, and both QBs for the Gophers looked lost on the field when trying to pass.

I guess I can see why there is excitement, after our top 2 QBs leave the program, and our best hope is a senior everyone forgot was still on the roster, or a juco transfer who had to go to NY from California just for a shot to play. Maybe it'll all work out. We've seen how well the "let's just sign a bunch of mediocre guys to play QB" worked for the Vikings, maybe it'll work out just as well for the Pokes.

I reread the entire thread and I can't seem to find one post that says that Philip Nelson is some kind of savior at qb.

What he is:

1. More highly rated out of high school then both Brett Smith and Jason Thompson.
2. A starter at qb for a B1G team as a true freshman.
3. One of the best qb's left on the board this late in the game.
4. A good fit with two years eligibility and a redshirt to give.
5. A guy with a lot of starting experience already.
6. A qb that has been playing for a bad team against a lot of very good teams in a system that doesn't pass the ball much.
7. An upgrade over the qb's we currently have on our roster.

So go ahead and be as negative as you want about this, but I still think this would be a positive to sign a three star qb, that has started a lot of games in the B1G, has two years of eligibility, and a reshirt to burn.

and if that happens they can enjoy playing in front of smaller crowds than Kelly Walsh

I'll respond to each of your points with my thoughts on them:

1. We all know that stars are determined by who is interested in you, and not a true measure of talent. Or at least that's what I've gathered from every post about recruiting players (especially Brett Smith) on this board.
2. Did you see the other QBs on the Gophers rosters? Leidner was the next best choice, and he's a RB who occasionally takes snaps.
3. Agree here. It's unlikely you'll find anything better available at this point. Not sure being the best of the available players means he's good or not.
4. If by fit you mean he'll have more time to play for the Pokes, then sure, he's a good fit. But by this metric, any HS QB would be an even better fit.
5. He "started" 9 games this season, and split the workload in a good number of them. He was also pulled in favor of Leidner in the most recent game.
6. Last I checked, Minnesota did something Wyoming couldn't do, and that was have a winning record. Oh, and one played in a real conference.
7. I probably agree with you here. I guess I'm trying to point out that even if he is an upgrade, it's a very small upgrade at that.

I'm not sure why I'm so active in this thread. I guess I just tried to step in with some of my own analysis from watching the guy play this season, and now it's devolved into a "you hate Nelson" thread. If Coach Bohl thinks this guy will make the team better, then I'm all for bringing him to Laramie. I just worry about a player who was just on a Pro-style offense, who left to find a passing team that fits his strengths better, potentially coming to a pro-style team, who from what I've been able to gather, wants to be a power rushing team and a west-coast style passing attack. It seems like a spread team would be a much better fit for his wishes.

Bohl and Vigen would want Nelson, absolutely, but I just don't see it.

It says "Add UCLA as a possible destination for transferring Gophers QB Philip Nelson, but Texas Tech appears to be the front runner!"

That means he will stay in the Big 10. How does that happen?

I agree, bad choice. Rutgers is at the Bottom of the Big 10 and likely to stay there and to me the campus is in a lousy location and stinks.....the only thing that it offers is a starting position because they are in such bad condition.

Rutgers is not officially in the Big Ten until July 1st. Therefore, Nelson can transfer to Rutgers without it being an "in-conference" transfer.

I don't believe Quarterback Philip will be taking a tour of Laramie anytime soon.

He'll possibly be seeing the inside of the Minnesota State correctional facility sometime soon...but not Laramie.

This is a tragedy on all sides, especially for Kolstad the young man that Nelson kicked. I just hope and pray that the young man survives and without permanent brain damage that will effect his life too much. Nelson pretty well screwed up his life with his actions it sounds like. When I read stories like this I just get sad at how much stupidity has caused such pain and hurt.

I really hope Luke Martinez has read the articles on the Nelson situation. It should be a wake up call for him and he should be thanking his lucky stars that critical brain injuries were avoided at the Buck.
