Ok, so the negative nancies have been out and had their say. Yes, we got beaten by a good Texas team, and trounced by an even better Boise State. But is anyone really surprised? So far, we've beaten the team we were supposed to beat, and lost to the teams we were supposed to lose to. We came out relatively healthy and hopefully learning something by seeing these guys first hand. Now we get to open our conference season with a good Air Force team that we should be able to play with. AF/WYO is almost always a good, competitive, hard-nosed football game. It should be fun to watch.
That said, we've got to improve in a couple of areas. First and foremost, we have got to tackle better. I think some of the poor tackling the last two games may have to do with the speed on the other side, but the point remains. I also think the defense is trying to strip the ball too often, which leads to not being able to wrap a guy up. Just get him on the ground and worry about turnovers later.
Second, our Lines on both sides have got to step up. Yes, ACS is good on his feet. That doesn't mean he needs to be running for his life every play! I think the line will improve as the season progresses, but they've got to take some big steps quickly. On D, we've got to get a pass rush going. Bot QB's the last two weeks had all day to find their targets. They've also got to learn to get off their man and plug the hole. You may not stop the guy, but I'm tired of seeing our safeties stop the run game.
Still, I see improvement being made each year, and I think DC is still putting the right pieces in place. We'll be ok, as long as we learn from the last two weeks, and go in prepard for AF. Personally, I'm looking forward to it.
GO POKES!
