Iowa thoughts

Was out drinking beers with some locals last night and it was interesting to hear their perspective. They're very proud of their defense's front 7 and their backs and o-line. I asked about wideouts and why they struggle recruiting good receivers and it was the consistent "ferentz sucks and won't go after anyone so we are destined to look like a team from the 1970s forever." They're not gonna throw the ball unless it's on wheel routes to their backs or to the tight end up the seam, which is something we struggled with last year.

Some further info...

Part of our passing game struggling last year was due to Matt Vandeberg (best receiver) being out for the bulk of the year (last nine games of the season) as well as George Kittle who may start at TE for the 49ers as a rookie this year. He was also held out of the spring game you referenced above. We certainly didn't have much depth at receiver last year which contributed to the struggles, so needless to say, we need to have some freshmen step up. Fortunately, it appears that some have with #80 Young and #12 Smith emerging as well as getting help from transfers #84 Easley and #9 Quarrels.

I also have a sneaking suspicion that the TEs will be a much bigger part of the offense with Brian Ferentz as OC.

Of course, we will try to get the ball in Wadley's hands as much as possible, but I wouldn't be surprised to see Butler have just as big a day running the ball.

A lot of that was the function on OG's being de facto OT's. SO not entirely on the receivers. We seem to be better at OT this season.

We'll see. With respect to IOwa, we'll know a lot about the team very early this year given Wyoming's passing, the rivalry w/ ISU and PSU being the B1G opener.

Same OTs as last year, Boettger and Myers.

Right. They look better this year. At the Spring game, limited time. But I saw them at a couple of closed practices. Much, much better. We'll see today in real time.

Another factor is going to be special teams. Iowa lost everyone on special teams. They get good athletes out there. We'll see how it shapes out. Special teams will be huge in a game between two old school ball programs.
