Injuries already?

Well you knew it was inevitable......I am back and here to share some news with yall. As many of you know we will be without some familiar faces this year. To start with Justin Berger, who redshirted last year is coming off of an ACL tear and won't be cleared until mid season. Tanner Simpson is done with a foot injury that was reported to be stress fractures but really is something else (Chronic Plantar Faciitis), Jake Maulhart pulled a hamstring today and Shawn Wick is out with yet another concussion. More to come........ :D

Good coverage from today's practice. According to the article, none of the concussions are serious. Also, check out the updated weights. Not as small at some positions as we originally thought.

There is an updated roster at Gowyo.com as well. A lot of new names.

Well, this thread scared me...but at least I didn't read "season ending injury" anywhere.

No such thing as a "light" or "mild" concussion, especially if you've had one before...
The side effects can vary (flash knockout or a KO needing smelling salts for examples), but I otherwise agree. And yeah, I've been flash KO'ed before.

Ha...smelling salts are a think of the past...they haven't been used for a long while.

Injuries are the nature of the beast, especially in football. A week in and not 1 season-ending injury yet is a pretty good start actually. They need to minimize Wick's contact over the next few weeks, the more concussions you get, the more susceptible you are to getting another one.

Using that as an example. And no, they really are not a thing of the past. They are still used in sports like MMA to help wake people up.

And for those that don't know, a flash knock out is what happens when you get hit hard enough in the head to lose consciousness for a split second. You may not even go to the ground because it happens so quickly, but you still feel the effects of the concussion.

The MMA does a lot of things differently, but in college athletics, they are no longer used; except maybe by a very small minority that are very very old school. Yes, the NFL does use them, but again they do things a lot different than college. The idea behind them is you are basically forcing the brain to "wake up" allowing the athlete to get back on the field. This is a big time no-no for college sports as it can mask signs and symptoms and could open up the athlete for further injury.

Some athletes use smelling salts right before competition since it's really a big ol' hit of menthol, which opens up nasal passages and makes it easier to breathe and get oxygen into the system. But no, they are not treatment for "getting your bell rung."

The biggest thing I think this affects is his possible NFL future. He's a senior, so it's not like it's a long time we've got to worry about the concussion risk while he's in the brown and gold.

In the long-term I agree...however in the short term, even small hits can add up. A lot of time in contact sports (especially boxing and MMA) you see cumulative concussions, where a lot of small hits that would be benign otherwise, add up to a concussive episode. The best example of this is in a boxing match where a guy takes blow after blow seeming unfazed and then a seemingly harmless tap knocks him out.

Translate that theory to football and a guy with a history of concussions, hit #1, 2, 3, and 4 might be fine, but all of them together make hit #5 the final blow.

We should worry about all of our Cowboy players, past and present. Not just when they wear the brown and gold. I still worry about Brett Smith and his massive concussions. Especially that cheap shot against Toledo. He was out cold for some time. I felt awful watching that hit. They will always be cowboys.

Remember though....what a guy is getting pulled from practice for now......wasn't even a reason to think about sitting out 10 yrs ago etc. Agree that any head trauma is serious but way more cautious now.

And lets face it...football is not healthy..it is violent and no matter how we try and sugar coat it...that is why we like it..why people like playing it.

Also curious what grade the hamstring injuries are...are they simply to avoid further injury or more of a season long concern.

Football is almost here!

Tommy Thorton out today with a concussion.
Thanks for the report. Concussions are no joke, but so far....nothing too bad on the injury front. This team is razor thin depth wise at some positions. Hate to see anything bad happen before the games even start.
