How Smith Decided to Enter Draft

I was involved with AFL football for a couple years and I have had family play. The salaries are garbage. The "high profile" players made 50-60k or so. The majority of the team was in the 20s (as of two years ago). My buddy had a real day job and playing fotoball was literally just for fun. Th AFL is not somewhere Smith wants to be. He is better off getting his degree and moving on.

The CFL isnt "much" brighter. http://cfldb.ca/faq/compensation/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

The NFL is the place to be. If you love the game that much, long term it may be best to get into coaching and see if you can land a gig coaching later. Long term it is better for your family and health. Although Javon Bouknight is still making crap as an asst at USU. $55k a year or so.

I loved B Smitty. I seriously will miss seeing him in a UW uniform. Looking back, (hindsight being 20/20) I think he would be in brown and gold in 2014 if he had to do it again.

$55K for a position coach at a non-Big 5 school isn't that terrible really...I would love to be making that much money.

I see what you are saying, but it proves two points:

1- Chances are you will make more as a coach than the CFL or AFL
2- Smith need to give one more shot at NFL...go to coaching...or move along with life.

The CFL is paying pretty competitive wages these days. Plus the Canadian dollar is pretty strong. Follow the money....

I think CFL would be a valid option. AFL is not.

But the dream of going to CFL and then to NFL is so, so rare. For every Kurt Warner there are 500 never was.

I can see and understand why Smith left. Hard to tell a kid he was wrong for chasing his dream. I just hope he finishes his degree before he drags it out for years and ends up 30 years old with only a high school diploma.

What I do not understand is how some people on here feel he should get into coaching. I may not have been watching the same Wyo games as you the last three years, but based on what I saw, Smith was an amazing athlete and leader, but had very poor football IQ. I am not trying to talk about the kid, he will be a figure head for Wyo for decades to come. But a coach and smart football player he is not, and will not be.

I believe that he thought this would be the highest his stock would be and I actually don't disagree with him on that.

The other side of it is that I have no idea of his academic standing towards a degree, not just gpa, and what his scholastic interests are.

There was only ONE Kurt Warner.

In the list of AFL QB's that made it to the NFL, Kurt Warner is the only I can think of who is a championship caliber QB.

Yeah, definitely a few CFL guys (Warren Moon and Joe Theismen come to mind) but Warner is the only AFL guy I can think of, too.

I bet Smith ends up coming back to Wyo as a grad assistant or something in the next few years.

If you were Coach Bohl, would you bring back a guy to coach who blew you off to enter the draft? And, imo, a questionable prospect in that draft? Just askin'.

Coach Bohl knows it wasn't done out of disrespect or anything like that, while I don't think we will ever see Brett Smith at Wyoming doing anything I do believe Bohl would give him the opportunity had he requested it.

Besides, Smith straight up told Bohl that if he heard that he would be evaluated high enough (whoever told him that should punch themselves) he would declare. Thompson, he's the one that blew off Bohl with his transfer out of nowhere.

If I was Coach Bohl, I would have been around college football long enough to know not to take things personal especially when it comes to dealing with kids wanting to play in the NFL, and I would also realize that Brett Smith being back at Wyo could only help his QBs, potential QB recruits (like someone named Cade) and get fans excited that Brett is back at Wyo.

You can't make decisions based off of "you never gave me a chance and you hurt my feelings" when you are a D1 coach, especially at a place like Wyo where resources are already slim to none. You make the best decision you can to win.

1) I did not say the HC took it personally. I just said the kid had the opportunity to play for a better HC and blew off the chance. Would another year have helped him? A year with a staff more familiar with the pro game? Without a doubt.

2) Do I think someone was blowin' smoke up Smith's a**? Without a doubt.

3) Does anyone really think bringin' the kid back would help a) the current QB's, or b) possible recruits? The system and personnel are totally different. And fame is fleetin'. Therefore, I doubt it.

4) Am I the only poster who doesn't think Smith is God? Without a doubt.

("Slim to none" resources? Oh puh...leeeze.)

Oh so you don't think Wyo is slim on resources? Are you new to Wyo athletics?
Teams that have resources to compete, win. The Oregons, the Alabamas, the USCs, the Floridas. Wyo doesn't have jack shit for resources, hence the reason we just hired an FCS coach.
Look at Washington, they just hired Peterson from Boise. Look at USC, they just hired Sarkisian from Washington.
Alabama hired Nick Saban from the NFL. LSU hired Les Miles from Okie State.
Those are teams with resources.

We don't have that.
Money=resources in college football.
Go on and on about how we have a weight room that is really nice and think that makes a difference, when every BCS team has the same, and half the non-AQ teams do as well.

Talk about how we sell out our tiny stadium only when a big name team brings 5-8K fans to do it for us.
Talk about how we have had 3 bowl seasons in the last decade.

Please tell me more about how we have resources to win at Wyoming.

Cade goes to Utah I'd put money on it, Anyway the rest I agree with.
