I think that is a fair observation on Smith.

I hope he can somehow latch onto a team, if nothing else, on a practice squad.

I think he deserves, at the very least, a shot at it.

He had a shot with Tampa. A little bit short lived, nevertheless it was a shot. Best scenario for him would be an injury or cut to another Qb in an NFL camp. Im pretty sure he will get another chance to prove he is an NFL Qb. It must be killing him not being able to play football. He probably hasn't sat out a season since he was a little kid.

The NFL is a pretty cutthroat business. *IF* he has the talent, and keeps trying to compete, he'll latch on somewhere. If not, he may want to set his sights lower. Arena, CFL, etc...

I"m pulling for the guy. He's young. He should keep trying. Coaching can come later. (Did he finish his degree? If not, I hope he does..and soon.)

According to the article, if Smith could go back he would still make the same decision?? That is the bizarre part that catches my attention. If he really didn't want to play at Wyoming his senior year, he still probably could have transferred to half the teams in the country and started at most.

That part had me scratching my head too.. he'd make the same decision to go back not get invited to the combine, not get drafted, be unemployed (without a college degree), and struggle to catch onto a team before training camp? Doesn't make sense. This year's QB class was pretty deep and there weren't a lot of buyers.. look how far most QBs fell.. after Bortles was taken at 3 the next QB didn't go until like.. 22, then 30. Teams just weren't looking for QBs.. plus being a mid-major who unexpectedly declares early makes it even tougher to get noticed.

He has to say he wouldn't change his mind. That would look bad admitting to the mistake. He is a kid that looks forwardand not back in my opinion so of course he is gonna say he would make the same choice but I bet deep down he wouldn't have.

Exactly, TS, that's really the only way he can look at. It's too painful otherwise, and people don't like to feel they're not in control, and when we're not we leave it up to god or some sort of force and say it is in control. We deflect all the time. It's human nature, we all do it every single day. Wouldn't change a thing, everything happens for a reason.. all part of a plan...In reality we just have no idea what we're doing and things often end up working out alright regardless. Serious thought for the day.

Also of note: He didn't receive bad information from anyone but himself and his folks. Hope this is a lesson in patience for them all.

Or he didn't want to throw anyone under the bus. I would have to believe that someone outside of his family provided him with inaccurate information. But maybe not.

I'll step out on the limb here. I believe Christensen told Smith that he would get picked up by an NFL team, and once he got fired, stayed in Smith (and his Dad's) ear about it. was listening to KFBC the other day, and one of the commentators made reference to "some things he had heard" that made him believe the same. Nothing official and no names were given, but the hint was there.

Either way, it's time to move on. Smith is gone, Christensen has moved on, and we've got a new era of Cowboy football to look forward to. I really do wish Smith the best, and hope he lands on an NFL practice squad somewhere.

GO POKES!

You never know, he could pull a Kurt Warner. Play semi pro, get picked up by a practice squad in the pros, work his way into a starting QB, and then win a Super Bowl!

I'm sure every AFL QB wants to make it to the NFL. Since the restructuring of the AFL contracts pay much much lower now. Most players hold full time jobs as well because they have to. Back in the day AFL players could make a living simply playing football which in turn has decreased the overall talent level of the AFL.

I would like to see the annual numbers of AFL players making the jump to the NFL. I bet they were much higher in the late 90's- early 00's

That is believable, especially considering the whole Jason Thompson situation.

I agree, excited for the new era of Cowboy Football and hope Brett Smith is able to catch on somewhere!
