LARAMIE – The University of Wyoming’s wrestling team will bring its show home this weekend for a pair of Western Wrestling Conference duals.
The Cowboys will host South Dakota State at 7 p.m. Friday and North Dakota State at 1 p.m. Sunday at the UniWyo Sports Complex.
It is the team’s first appearance in Laramie since a 20-12 loss to Nebraska in early December.
UW (7-4 overall, 1-0 WWC) is ranked in all four collegiate polls as of Tuesday: NWCA Coaches Poll (25th); D1 College Wrestling (23rd); WIN Magazine (tied for 15th with Arizona State); and InterMat (tied for 21st with Nebraska).
Four Cowboys are also ranked individually in the weekly InterMat Poll.
They are: junior Shane Onufer (fourth, 165 pounds); junior Joe LeBlanc (fifth, 184); junior Michael Martinez (18th, 125); and senior Cole Dallaserra (18th, 149).
Onufer and Dallaserra both moved up in the rankings; LeBlanc and Martinez stayed the same. Onufer was sixth last week and Dallaserra was 19th.
The NCAA Coaches Panel also released one of its three polls for the season this week. The final rankings are one of the tools used to select the field for the NCAA Division I wrestling championships.
Wrestlers are also seeded by winning percentage and rating percentage index in each weight class.
Cowboys in the panel’s rankings are: LeBlanc (fifth), Onufer (sixth), Dallaserra (20th), Martinez (22nd) and redshirt freshman Tyler Cox (27th, 133 pounds).
“We can start gearing toward looking that direction and seeing what needs to be done for us to qualify for the NCAA tournament,” coach Mark Branch said. “On an individual basis, the focus is there a little bit more. Team-wise, we want to maintain our position in the conference and we expect to win conference matches and finish on top.”
UW opened WWC action last Saturday with a 23-15 win at Utah Valley.
The Cowboys are 11-0 against the SDSU Jackrabbits (1-9-1, 0-2), winning 34-9 last year. Against the NDSU Bison (7-2, 1-1), UW is 6-4 after a 25-15 win last year.
The Bison have two wrestlers ranked by the Coaches Panel: Trent Sprenkle (18th, 125) and Vince Salminen (18th, 157).
