headcoach material?

I guess my checklist for team supervisor is different than some here.

when glenn was fired, and coach dc was brought in; there was one major focus for the new hiring. Burman wanted offense. He had been through what...? 12 years of defensive minded coaches. glenn, koeinning, dimel.

we had lost attendance numbers, and had been firmly seated in the dark ages of Wyoming football history.

DC has done everything this administration has asked of him. If you think that burman would rather have a defensive minded head coach, you are sorely mistaken.

Now all that said, the last time Wyoming had a complete coaching staff was the roach and tiller years. If you look at the staff and where they went after... many coaches came out of that roach tree, too include sumlin at a&m.

We are weaker on the defensive side of the football... but dc doesn't have as many personal connections to defensive coaching trees.

everybody wants a complete package when a new coach is hired, but that happens maybe 10% of the time.

There needs to be a balance when a new coach is hired that is better at one aspect than the other.... ala Christensen. We can't expect him to fire his defensive staff after every season because some fans have expectations of wanting a coaching tree powerhouse. it hurts the players, and damages programs with constant coaching turnover.

if I had my choice, we would hire a young defensive mind that has been groomed under jack del rio', or dick lebeau... as a coordinator... not as a new coach.

coach Christensen has done everything that our athletic director asked. Improve our offense, win games, get back to bowl games, and increase our attendance.

people need to focus on the time restraint of hiring new coordinators. at least dc has shown the ability to let people go. glenn wouldn't fire anybody, and he was lucky he had breske.

What I don't get is that people are getting their fucking panties in a bunch after a WIN on homecoming.
I could understand if people were freaking out about this shit if we had just LOST to NM, but we just won and people are freaking out.
To me, how can you call yourself a fan if you are pissed off about Wyoming winning?

I'm mad about the manor in which we win. If that makes me less of a Wyoming fan, then so be it.

I don't expect the defense to be world beaters every year. In fact, I know that the recruiting focus has been on offense, the teams best players are on offense, and the coaches experience is on offense.

That doesn't change the fact that it makes me feel sick to my stomach to see us blow a 21 point lead against UNM. It doesn't make me proud to see four guys in position to make a tackle on the 20 and watch that guy run into the end zone untouched because of our inability to tackle.

I know our defense isn't the best, I just want to see us take tackling a little more seriously and drop the focus on stripping the ball.

You do realize we just held the #1 rush attack in the NCAA to 100 yards+ less than their normal right?
Also, one of the TDs was due to the punt returner muffing the punt.
And one of the TDs was at the end of the game when the game was pretty much decided.

and I agree Junky. totally.

and while the over all responsibility lies with Christensen, the defense is not his. coach c is having to rely on defensive hires to take care of it for him. he sent enlish packing... sent two offensive coordinators out the door.

he shows management skills... and he isn't trying to do something that he doesn't have a complete grasp of. I want cowboy tough too... but what we did under glenn made me sick...

the crap with koenning and dimel... garbage.

Who would we hire?

what coach could Wyoming bring in for a year one fix... and make us top ten nationally in defense and offense. who could Wyoming hire, on a million dollar budget that could come in with two bad ass coordinators.

Nobody.

we have to build our coaching tree and staff from within. and it doesn't happen in five year window. it took Lavell Edwards and fisher deberry years to get their trees entrenched.

really, our offensive coaching tree is pretty effing good. I don't know where too look for defensive coaches... they are getting harder and harder too find. with the nfl's shift towards high scoring offenses for tv numbers... its hard to find defensive coaches that know how to recruit for specific packages...

and guess what... defensive coaches are getting fired. lane kiffen, many diaz.

I would like to see an improved defense... but firing dc is not the answer. its finding the right pieces to complete our needs.

Beaver, this kind of posting profane, hateful personal attack on another Poke fan is counterproductive and it needs to stop

+100 DC is the right man for the job, and the defense is better this year than last year, and brings everyone back so it should be even better next year.

Good god wyoalum......

Let me repost it for you then....
What I don't get is that people are freaking out after a WIN on homecoming.
I could understand if people were freaking out about this stuff if we had just LOST to NM, but we just won and people are freaking out.
To me, how can you call yourself a fan if you are pissed off about winning?

That better? I changed 2 words... My point is still the same. How can people be freaking out after a WIN?

Beaver,
The post is much better for the lack of profanity, though your choice to question whether or not I am a fan is unnecessarily confrontational, and detracts.
So, stop that kind of discourse, or at least keep it to a minimum.

So your point is that you don't know why people are freaking out and are angry after we won the game.

The problem here is that you used false categorization. Anyone who chose to disagree that this is now a team for the ages and that DC is now the best coach since Roach was accused of being ignorant or worse. If they chose to support their disagreement with an argument then they are criticized in this post as "freaking out" or "angry".

It unnecessarily polarizes everyone.

We are all happy with the wins-whoever they may come against. It is certainly better than the alternative.

What we dont like is being attacked for not agreeing with your assessment of this current team's accomplishments and potential

Yea I would totally disagree with the D being better. It looks worse to me and it was really bad last year. BTW Patrick Mertens,Marqueston Huff,Justin Bernthaler and Devyn Harris are all seniors and will not be back next year.

Yes we do lose them, but the only one I see being hard to fill is Huff. We have experience at all of the other spots we lose and Harris and Bernthaler are rotating with people who come back next year in Stanton and Olive. They are not a good defense but they aren't terrible either and are definately better than a year ago, and hopefully will be better next year with a majority coming back and having the system in place for year two with the switch to the 3-4.

The defense looks improved to me, but that could be because they are forcing turnovers. Is forcing turnovers pure luck or is there skill behind it?

And what I don't get is how the defense isn't genuinely good with the amount of pure talent we do have. Burns, Huff, Olive, Pelutasi, Api'Api, Wacha, Mertens, etc. They are all good, but the D is not that good. Is that due to Tormey?

Now we can have a discussion, it is funny how two people can look at the same thing and have completely different views. To me the defense doesn't looked improved at all. I also don't see the pure talent you see. Burns hasn't lived up to the hype, Huff hasn't been very good at all at CB, but he is kicking ass at Safety. Olive is young and has a lot of potential but is average, Pelutasi seems to have regressed playing average at best. Api'Api, is he even playing? Wacha is going to be really good, but not right now. I think merten is solid. I do think Tormey is a horrible DC. AND for the record I'm behind Dave 100% but that could change after next year.

He didn't address anyone. He just stated his opinion. For you to respond to it like this seems to make me think it got to you a little.

Since when is Wyoming so good that we can complain about how we win a conference game, we won! move on and let's get excited for sheep week. Take a win and be happy, you can talk about the negatives in the game that is one thing, but how about the positives? Brett put the team on his back when they needed him most. If it weren't for a dropped td by herron, norman slipping at the inch line and us getting a FG, and Burns' fumble you would all be happy. take the win and leave it at that we are 4-2 for cryin out loud

All of the drama on the board really goes back to one thing: Texas State.

If the Pokes win that game, then I guarantee you the tone on this board would have been dramatically different after a 38-31 win over UNM.

Our offense is good, our defense is bad, and our special teams is embarrassing. Not any different from any other point in the season to be honest, except the Texas State game where our offense had an off night.

Brett and company are going to tear CSU a new orifice and will likely run up big offensive numbers on everybody else we play except Boise (and maybe them too). I set the O/U at about 75 for most of our remaining games. Last one with the ball wins, hope it's the Pokes. The "Wacky WAC" is back.

It truly is! As bad as our defense is, we are about average in the MWC. There is not what I would call a great defense in the whole conference. Only Boise and Utah State seem to have any defense at all.

Exciting football for sure!

Fresno's 1st-team defense is pretty good.....very athletic. Its the depth that makes them look bad in 2nd halves.
