Game Thread: Wyoming @ Indiana State

-Rebounding margin is the main difference in the game. We got killed on the boards. Adams can't be our leading rebounder every night, that's a recipe for a losing season.

-The offense looks a lot more pick and roll/slash and kick oriented than last year's. I'm in favor of that in theory, but the whole offense can't be initiated after Adams pounds the ball for several seconds.

-Defense is a work in progress. I saw lots of miscommunication/misunderstanding on switches, basic stuff that has to get ironed out. No surprise with a young team.

-I didn't really think most of the three point attempts were bad shot selection. Some nights they just don't go down. Lieberman has to get out of the early season funk though.

We are who we thought we are. Talented, young, inexperienced. We'll get better. We should be taking the long view towards peaking in March. Living and dying game-to-game is dumb with the roster as it is. We will be capable of winning every game we play and just about equally capable of losing every game. We'll be .500 or so in MWC play but if the young fellas stay focused on improving game to game we'll be a bastard come tournament time.

And it's not weird to expect greatness every year. Maybe we should expect to suck like football. It's worked great for them

You know I love you brother, but this team is sooooo lacking in maturity and seasoning that anyone who can't see this is a huge transitional year has been swallowing way too much brown and gold kool aid. No, I don't expect greatness for this year's hoops team any more so than I expected it for Bohl's football team.

They weren't even great last year, in fact, they were pretty mediocre for much of the season and then overachieved in the MWC tournament.

I love my Pokes, but I'm also an objective realist too.
Well I do expect greatness. I get that they're young and immature. But the other night showed that this team, when hitting shots, can score a ton. We will have a 50/50 in every game this year depending on which team shows up. That's the reality this year.

They played a cupcake for crying out loud!
I like you Dino. I'm not gonna keep beating this team down. You said it. They're young. They've got some growing up to do. But I guarantee Shyatt and Adams expect more than this performance.

I'm far from beating them down B...but life on the line would you bet it that this team is a MWC contender? This team?
After this past weekend I wouldn't bet on any MWC team as a contender. I've never said that I expect this team to make it to the Tournament. All I have said is that I sure as shit expect more than CBI every year. If the CBI happens I'll be there rooting loud as always. This team has tons of upside potential. Will it come together this season? Probably not. But this group of freshman have a better chance of making the tournament than Nances group of freshman did. And I just want this team to progress towards playing solid team basketball

You summed this up perfectly -- and it says here that I hope you're right on the money.

Go Pokes.

Okay, I can buy this, it sounds perfectly reasonable. I'm with you.

I don't know... You've been awfully quiet. Are you still on the NCAA or NIT or bust rhetoric?
Are you gonna bust my chops like you tried last time when I told you that was too lofty of a goal this year? Or do you continue to wear the brown and gold glasses and live in virtual reality?
I have had my eye in this game since I first saw it on the schedule. I thought this one would be the true test to tell us exactly where this young team is. It sure did show. And it was worse than I initially thought... And I was the one who "dared" guess only 14 to 17 wins... If we have more games like this, we will be lucky to win 12 this year. And that is reality. But even if that is the case, I do think we see a giant upswing come the following year.

Said this to you not to long ago, but apparently you either forgot or didn't get it through your head.
NCAA Tourney is the goal.
If they don't make it, then the season was a failure.
NCAA or bust? Yep.
Losing to Indiana State is not good.

And seriously, I don't care about any of the rest of crap you have to say. Next time you sit around waiting for me to post just so you can limit your same old tired ass respond to 2 lines.

Well, sucks for Josh's senior year, but I had a feeling that this year may not be all sunshine and daisies. Losing 4 of 5 starters to graduation with very little experience behind them? Yeah, I had a suspicion we would have issues this year. Though one of our biggest is the guys constantly jacking up 3s without really trying to get down low. If you ain't hitting them, start shooting closer to the rim.

Tough game for the pokes tonight, shots simply didn't go down. Dalton played well I thought, as did James even tho the shots weren't falling. Adams played his heart out like always, shots wouldn't go down for him either. Still waiting for something, anything from Herndon, he's one of the "veterans" and I thought he'd probably be our 2nd option this season after Adams, but so far he's been entirely invisible for 3 games. Gonna be lots of ups and downs this year, but looking forward to seeing the team grow together and improve as the season goes along. On to the next one!

Are you delusional? If they don't win the MWC Tournament again and fail to get into the Big Dance, then the season is a failure? If this is your vantage point you need to get yourself acquainted with something called; 'process'.

Wait wait wait. Lemme get this straight. You think the Wyoming football program is actually headed in the right direction and going to win the MWC in 2 years yet I'm the one that's delusional?

Gotcha. :thumb:

Hey Dino, is the world going to end this week? Or were you predicting it to end during the bowl season? You keep avoiding this topic...

You need to brush up on your math. 3 seasons, I said, not 2...3. 2018. And yes, I feel they are headed in the right direction, it's called a 'process', it's not done overnight, and there are no quick fixes. Bob Davie and the process is playing itself out nicely in New Mexico right now.

Unreal!

Well, The Lord tells each of us that the time and place can never be known definitively. Far from avoiding this, in fact, it's a topic that intrigues and fascinates me greatly...I'll be more than happy to expound upon this as often as you wish to.

I'm more than certain we are living in the book of Revelation and within the end times period...but no, I don't claim to know the date, nor the time.

Haha. This board is astounding. Fire Bohl because he has a tough task ahead of him and we should be winning the national titles right now RAARRRRGGH!!! Expect better than the CBI in basketball? That's madness, MADNESS!!! You people are funny

Well I missed most of the 2nd half but I got the gist of what this team is kinda gonna be about this season. I love that we have a lot of different lineup combos we can work on. Didn't get to see Mo Marshall play. Is that dude in the doghouse? MUST be right? Anyhow I've seen enough to watch and be entertained. There's room for growth in the players. We look more athletic all around then we've been in awhile. Pokes lookin a little raw and the confidence isn't there quite yet.

James could be special. I want them to try some double big combos with one big (Barnes/Naughton), one skinny (Dalton/Herndon). I'm not saying run with that always but I'd love to see us test out multiple formations of players. We could win with small ball too. If those 3's fall and we time our penetration to the hole right it could be fine. Still like I said earlier in this game thread our ability to change styles with some success is gonna really determine a lot. There is some depth there.

Now one thing we totally share in common with football is how bad our D is. I mean hoops D isn't nearly as bad as football D which was an absolute
giphy.gif

This is Shyatt ball we're talking about though. They pride themselves on D. We gotta pick it up somehow. Can we press? Should we? We always seem to get lit up on 3's though which is concerning. I hate how so many opposing teams have that kinda night against us.

Exactly! Not hard to figure these things out.

Have there really been that many people with really high expectations for this season? I haven't paid attention.

This team will win some games and I think be pretty competitive especially by the end of the season, but it is clearly a rebuilding year. Shyatt has done a great job of getting a dumpster fire off the ground and to the NCAA in a few years. A minor rebuilding year isn't that big of deal. We need some help down low so hopefully that will materialize by next year.

This team will have to shoot well to win. Even hitting 34% of the 3s and 70% of the FT would have made this game much closer if not a win. FWIW, 34% from 3 and 70% on FT were about our averages last year. We'll shoot better and still have an okay season; certainly nothing as bad as pre-Shyatt.

Rebuilding seasons happen and aren't a big deal as long as there has been significant progress. I'd say there has been plenty of progress.

Based on last night's numbers, that's roughly 13 points (3 more 3's for 10-30, 4 more FT's for 14-19). Certainly would have made it close. Also, that FT calculation doesn't count the front ends of 1-and-1's that we missed.

The only person calling for NCAA's this year is Beaver and if I understand him correctly, I took it to mean "at teh start of every year the NCAA's should be your goal, to shoot for anything else is giving up." Yet Dino acts like he is the only one with the sense to temper expectations this year.

This season is gonna be fun to watch the growth of the team. This game was dissapointing but not unexpected. THe team shot horrible and shot too many 3's. Maybe they will start making them and we will love the amount of 3's they shoot. I think they will adjust and start attacking the rim more. This was the teams first road trip and we are suprised they didn't play well. If we had made the easy layups we missed we would have been within a couple baskets. This team will have up and downs enjoy the ride.
People drawing conclusions after one game is silly. It was silly last year when we over reacted to each individual game and that was a veteran team. Its even sillier to over react to this young team after each game.

Not super upset with this loss, as it's more of a growing and understanding time what it takes to win on the road, but truly hope we see more balance scoring and such, and Josh needs to get around 20 for us to truly be successful
