Well we beat them by 1 more point then West Texas A&M did lol
We seemed to start the game playing good defense but then got lackadaisical and quit playing defense and we got out rebounded 40-27 against a D2 team. Can't imagine what teams in the MWC will do to us on the boards.
I really really hope we improve a lot before conference.
+1
Don't get me wrong, I think LS is a really good coach, but one glaring deficiency I've seen in all of his teams is a lack of rebounding skills. For the life of me I cannot understand how a DII school can come in and work the Pokes on the boards like this. Rebounding doesn't require great height (Charles Barkley was only 6'5" yet was one of the best ever in both college and the pros). What is does require is a commitment to learning HOW to rebound. So my question, if I could talk to LS and his staff, why aren't your kids any good at rebounding? I understand his philosophy of getting back on defense so the offensive rebounding suffers, but nobody knows how to box out on the defensive end. New Mexico Highlands had 40 rebounds to our 27. If Wyoming has an Achilles heel, more than anything else, it is a lack of rebounding. Come conference time, that shit will kill us.
I won't deny that we got worked on the boards tonight, but I think you are incorrect in your assessment of our rebounding skills.
Last season after about 17 or 18 games I looked at box scores to see how we did rebounding compared to the other team.
And I found that even though ESPN ranks us as the 300th or 330th best team rebounding, we actually won the rebounding battles in most games.
We get so many fewer rebounds because the slower pace means fewer shots, we had good FG% with Larry and DC, and our defense causing shot clock violations and turnovers.
I don't know how we did in the rebound battle once MW play got going, or how much of it was just Larry and DC. But I don't think we are as bad at rebounding as some like to think.
