Game Thread: New Mexico Highlands @ Wyo

Well we beat them by 1 more point then West Texas A&M did lol

We seemed to start the game playing good defense but then got lackadaisical and quit playing defense and we got out rebounded 40-27 against a D2 team. Can't imagine what teams in the MWC will do to us on the boards.

I really really hope we improve a lot before conference.

When we were at the Tourney in March I told you I think Wyo will win a lot of games with this team, thinking we could beat up on some OOC games and be respectable in MW play. I don't know if that's the case anymore.

I don't know if we will win those OOC games or be very respectable in MW.

Don't get me wrong, I think LS is a really good coach, but one glaring deficiency I've seen in all of his teams is a lack of rebounding skills. For the life of me I cannot understand how a DII school can come in and work the Pokes on the boards like this. Rebounding doesn't require great height (Charles Barkley was only 6'5" yet was one of the best ever in both college and the pros). What is does require is a commitment to learning HOW to rebound. So my question, if I could talk to LS and his staff, why aren't your kids any good at rebounding? I understand his philosophy of getting back on defense so the offensive rebounding suffers, but nobody knows how to box out on the defensive end. New Mexico Highlands had 40 rebounds to our 27. If Wyoming has an Achilles heel, more than anything else, it is a lack of rebounding. Come conference time, that shit will kill us.

I won't deny that we got worked on the boards tonight, but I think you are incorrect in your assessment of our rebounding skills.

Last season after about 17 or 18 games I looked at box scores to see how we did rebounding compared to the other team.
And I found that even though ESPN ranks us as the 300th or 330th best team rebounding, we actually won the rebounding battles in most games.

We get so many fewer rebounds because the slower pace means fewer shots, we had good FG% with Larry and DC, and our defense causing shot clock violations and turnovers.

I don't know how we did in the rebound battle once MW play got going, or how much of it was just Larry and DC. But I don't think we are as bad at rebounding as some like to think.

Yeah back in March at the tourney things were looking good lol. A few months later and things are looking a little different. I actually figured we would struggle some but I didn't think we would struggle with two different Division 2 teams. I guess we didn't really struggle tonight as far as winning the game but you can tell there is some weaknesses. The main thing I see is we aren't playing for a full 40 minutes.

We play for about 10 minutes each half and take the other ten minutes off defensively anyways and then we shoot too many 3's instead of attacking the basket. Just part of being young I suppose.

Sometimes I feel like these guys play like me when I'm at open gym. I stand around the perimeter waiting for someone else to do all the work or pass it to me to shoot a three. I'm lazy. The team shouldn't be.

Yep. That's exactly what it seems. NO one wants to rebound on the defensive end. They just want to get up court and spot up at the 3 point line and then when the offense is being run everyone stands around at the 3 point line or runs to it waiting to get a pass to fire one up.

You're probably right. Maybe just my perception, especially when our interior kids are just as tall and just as athletic, yet our guards have the most rebounds. I hope I'm wrong.

I might go through every box score from season to see how it played out, but you could be right.
Maybe Nance just bailed us out more than we thought. Maybe that's why he was a 1st round NBA draft pick.

You were right about the rebounding last year. Pokes were actually a borderline elite defensive rebounding team last year (30th in the country out of over 350 schools in defensive rebounding percentage). Our overall numbers are always low because we don't pursue offensive boards and play a slow tempo. Also keep in mind that last year is ranking included a number of games played without Nance or with him recovering. Nance and Cooke were both great defensive rebounders.

Having said that, Nance and Cooke aren't coming back and in the context of this season I believe we could be looking at a historically bad rebounding team. I would bet good money that we finish last in the MWC this year in rebounding percentage (tempo-free).

This board is ridiculous. We lose on Monday and the sky is falling. We win tonight and the sky is falling. WE ARE GOING TO BE STREAKY! Larry Shyatt is not asking the guys to rebound as, in his own words, "we are going to be a weak team until we get some weight on these guys." Everyone is trying to view this team through the lens of last year and it's not even close to the same. We are going to be a live-and-die-by-the-three kinda team.

Good lord. Nance and Cooke got rebounded all the damn time last year and we still won a lot. It's important as a stat as any but we can still win without a huge game on the glass. Relax people. Give this team time to figure out who they are. Even LS said tonight he's trying to figure out who this team is. BREATHE

was at game. My thoughts:

Josh Adams is amazing. Three incredible plays from him tonight. The two dunks and that block. wow. His back is going to be sore all season from carrying this team.

We got murdered on the boards as many have said. It is a lot worse when James and Barnes are out. This is going to kill us all year long. Herndon, I'm trying not to pile on, but dang. He's like a 7th grade girl out there. Dalton gets shoved around, too.

Offense is still garbage. If we rely on the three like this we'll win maybe 10 games this year.

James is talented. JJ needs to drive to the hole whenever possible because good things happen. Trey Wash needs to play more, he's much better than Lieberman at this point.

I have no clue why Marshall isn't playing. it makes no sense especially since we can't rebound. He is obviously an elite athlete, who can score, defend and REBOUND. It makes no sense at all. I hope he stays positive because it's getting ridiculous.

And the crowd sucked. Was like a morgue. This is what happens when you lose your banner-raising game to ft. shit state. People don't want to come back. Hope everyone's happy about that.

We were outscored from the 7 min mark in the first half on.
We gave up 67 points to a D2 school!!! And we're supposed to be a defensive team?
They cut the lead clear down to 9 at one point.
There is very little to be pleased about in a game like this. It reminds me on the Panhandle St game a few years back. Games we should easily take care of, we act like we don't know what we're doing out there.

We pretty much know that Herndon is not going inside often enough. Barnes is going to get limited touches down low and Dalton is no bruiser either. We have no inside game. Everyone will figure that and make us live and die by the 3 pointer... Mostly die, the way we shoot it. And on occasion will have a few slashes to the basket, but not often enough as well.

I fear that if these guys do not step up, this season is going to be worse than I even predicted...

Was there as well. Couldn't agree more. Nearly 8k at the Fort Lewis game with all the excitement from last season. We won't see 8k again after we shit our pants in that game. I already hear fans saying here we go again, just like football. We needed to capitalize and build on the momentum when the banner was raised. I don't give shit if it was an exhibition or not, give the fans something to get excited about.

Josh was truly stellar last night and coulda went for more, he's not a selfish player at all, the others well as the old saying goes it's truly a work in progress, but overall they got good work and I was satisfied with what i saw. They will need to be better against Montana St that's for sure!!!
Happy Thanksgiving to all my PokesNation fans as I headed to Arizona next week to visit the elderly grandparents, and also take in the Bengals vs Cardinals game and just unwind a bit. May it be enjoyable for everyone and take care!!

Seriously. Everyone jumped down my throat when I was pissed we lost. Oh it's an exhibition, we're getting experience! Bull. It's still a game we had to pay for and we got a crap product and an embarrassing loss. Stupid, stupid, stupid move by Shyatt to lose that game. I hope HE'S happy with the garbage crowds there'll be the rest of the way.

Enjoy the sunshine!

Another thought: Barnes is better than people think. He's got a soft touch down low and is a pretty good passer and can shoot FTs well. We could get the ball down low to him more than we do and that would help out the offense overall.

This board is a strange place. We have a team with one senior, two juniors (one is new to the team), and the rest freshman and sophomores. We won comfortably, but not as comfortably as we could have considering the start. But now the sky is falling for some. We didn't win by as many as we should have, etc.yadda,yadda,yadda.

I"ll take the win and chalk the "lack of a major blowout" to getting experience and learning how to play together.

It doesn't take a genius to see that people that people would not be happy after a loss to DII school. a lot like football. Shyatt made the conscious choice to lose. I can't get my wife to come to any more games. Same deal with my brother, he can't get his wife to come either. It was a dumb move to lose that game.
